Grande Communications Puts Itself on the Market
Hoping to fetch half a billion dollars
by KathrynV Sunday 20-Jan-2008 tags: dsl · Fiber · business · cable · Grande Communications
Grande Communications, a Texas communications company that bills itself as the first broadband company in the region to build a fiber network from the ground up, is looking into options for being bought out by another company. The decision was made in part after a similar purchase last year in which Everest Broadband was acquired by SureWest. The $173 million sale translated into the unusually high price of $4600 per subscriber for Everest. Based on that estimate, Grande could hope to be sold for up to $600 million although they’re currently hoping for a half billion dollar price tag.

NOOOO!!!

This really sucks. Grande was one of the best companies I have ever experienced. They offered telephone, cable and Internet access with good pricing plans. They were the only ISP I found that offered tiered access at good prices (back in 2002 256k broadband cost the same as other dialup services). They offered a large amount of cable channels at prices lower than regional incumbent (Time Warner in Austin). I fear all of that good stuff will go away if they get bought out.

Maybe they are up for sale because they were losing money selling their product at the prices they did.

Re: NOOOO!!!

More likely they're not able to get enough capital to fund expansions. They are in some cases a over builder. Unfortunately a lot of their networks in Verizon serviced cities were overbuilt by Verizon.

If they became part of Surewest that may not be a bad thing.

Grande Up For Sale

About dang time! I've been living in an apartment complex with 1980s version analog cable for 5 years waiting for Grande to get around to upgrading the place.

dreaming

that $4600 per use price tag sounds good for commercial accounts but I cannot imagine my residential services being worth anywhere near that. That is almost 3 years of my home bill. Plus all the debt that someone would have to take on. I have been waiting on them to cover my street, and provide some competition to Roadrunner. i guess I'll have to wait for them to find a buyer.
