Growing List of Countries Oppose ACTA
Germany Joins Latvia, Poland, Czech Republic in Opposition
by Karl Bode Friday 10-Feb-2012 tags: legal · business · legislation · world · content
As we've discussed for months, the ACTA took all of this country's worst copyright ideas --many of them enshrined in the controversial DMCA -- made them considerably worse, then foisted them upon much of the globe with little to no real public discussion. With SOPA generating unprecedented public disgust, it helped draw a lot of attention to ACTA -- and now support in numerous countries appears to be falling apart. Poland, Czech Republic and Latvia have all withdrawn their support for the agreement, and now Germany has postponed their vote. Granted the the European Union and 22 of its 27 member states already signed the agreement in January, but it's clear that the growing public protests (which are expected to grow significantly louder Saturday) across numerous countries have started to make politicians nervous.

Don't worry

Don't worry, I'm sure the US will find a way to ram it through anyway, making sure to piss off everyone else in the process.

We can always send some "heroes" to convince them.

True. It still amazes me how we try to impose our laws and values on other countries yet flip out when the tables are turned and other countries try the same. (sarcasm)I guess it is because we are better than everyone else(/sarcasm) :/

If at least we would abide by what we preach to others, maybe I would have some sympathy on that, but...

Re: In the immortal words of Nelson Muntz...

Nelson Muntz? Never heard of him... could he be a writer like Tennessee Williams or Mark Twain or Ernest Hemingway?

Google is my friend so I googled the name... from the Simpsons? Really? Sometimes I watch the Simpsons but I didn't know that guy's name.

Anyway, good quote... you learn something new every day

Nice to see that the vermin republicans are limited to US

A lot of vermins around here would cry piracy theft socialist communist etc but I am glad the vermin republicans and their consort faux news are limited to America only. They would have another Bush that would declare war on other nations in tandem with their corporative scum policies and then they would have a teaparty under the banner mission accomplished.

I just wanted to take a moment and point out that President Obama (D) has already signed ACTA, Dont be so partisan or blind both parties are scumbags whos goal is to keep us apart.

They are saying the president signing it is unconstitutional so we wait and see.

I want my freedom to steal

How dare film makers, artists or anybody that invests in creativity stop us pirating their works for free. I want to be able to walk into my local shop and take what I want without paying, just like millions do on the internet. I don't care if struggling artists can't feed their families because of piracy. They should be thankfull we take the time to listen to their music - infact they should pay us! I don't care if a young director manages to make a minor hit film with promising sales where he might just cover his costs - only for it to be posted on the piratebay and kill any chance he had of paying the cast, cameras, makeup, lighting and moving forward with new projects. In a similar vein I think my boss shouldn't bother paying me, after all I steal everything so I couldn't hold it against my boss for doing the same. Why should I be paid for my hard work? Best of all, because I now work for free I am not taxable and no longer contribute to the running of schools, roads and hospitals.

Yet movie stars still make millions of dollars to simply star in a 30 second commercial.

Cry me a river, build a bridge and get over it.

I'm forced to point out that you forgot to include the RIAA/MPAA dreamed up dollar figures on piracy.

Your sarcasm is misplaced. Most people don't disagree with giving people their fair due, but the bill isn't about that; it's about camouflaging censorship. Read up on it a bit more, and some of the debates and you'll understand it better.
