HBO Go Arrives On Playstation 3, Just Not For Comcast Users

HBO has announced that they continue to expand availability of their HBO Go streaming effort, which is this week being made available on the Sony Playstation 3. However, once again highlighting the fractured and often annoying tendency of content agreements and the "TV Everywhere" approach, Comcast users won't be able to use the new functionality.

Comcast has been a stumbling block for HBO Go availability for some time; users have been complaining since 2011 that the cable giant doesn't allow HBO Go to work on Roku if you're a Comcast cable subscriber. I've yet to see a meaningful answer as to why that's the case, and this week is no exception. Comcast tells The Verge getting authentication to work takes time:

quote:
"With every new website, device or player we authenticate, we need to work through technical integration and customer service which takes time and resources. Moving forward, we will continue to prioritize as we partner with various players."
So, Roku users haven't been able to use HBO Go for three years because it takes time and resources? Time and resources most other pay TV companies seemed to have no problem with but the nation's largest cable company somehow doesn't have? Perhaps Comcast's attention is just focused elsewhere, like their own Xfinity streaming and on demand platform that also provides HBO content.

Regardless, users over at the official Comcast forum aren't getting any answers on why they can't use their PS3's to watch content from a channel they pay for, either.

Comcast has refused to comment on HBOgo streaming devices

Comcast has refused to comment on HBOgo streaming device availability for several year in their own forums. It is avail on Apple TV, but not Roku; some SmartTVs vendors. No amount of complaints seem to move mgt to reply as to why that is the case.

Re: Comcast has refused to comment on HBOgo streaming devices

I would be willing to bet there is a payment somewhere from the companies that do work to Comcast.

That simply can be the only reason it has been 3 years and the Roku doesn't work and yet much smaller systems work fine.

This is a clear example of Comcast simply denying content from being delivered by a means that directly competes with them and they want their hand in the cookie jar.

From WHO? Apple? This just reeks of incompetence to me, not conspiracy.

I am assuming...

it has something to do with the way they authenticate the users.

Re: I am assuming...

But HBO Go on Roku hasn't been supported by Comcast since 2011. A company the size of Comcast can't work that out in three years but all the other pay TV companies can?

Here's a small list of things that currently require authenticating with Comcast:
- CableWiFi (wireless hotspots)
- Dozens of TV channel app on smartphones and tablets (including HBOgo)
- Comcast's own web site for streaming live TV.

None of those have issues with authentication so I call BS on authentication being "too hard" to do with HBOGo.

Perhaps if we let them acquire Time Warner Cable they'll magically find a way to offer Roku authentication!

Re: inconvenience abound

Agreed. I have HBO from a promotional offer, and its STILL more convenient for me to go find a download site... Most of their content is available through Comcast OnDemand but goodness that interface is slow, and not that pleasant to search.

OnDemand searching much improved with the rapidly expanding x1 STB platform.

Yes, but that means you will need to pay a monthly fee for the stb on a tv that might not be used that much. Also, can that X1 box go on vacation with you?

I can't get X1 unless I go triple play in my area, other wise I would agree.

Cut out the middle man

Why can't we just pay HBO directly and cut out the middle man?

I would subscribe immediately and stop.. Acquiring shows through other means... If we could do that.

But no, I guess HBO doesn't want my money. Shame, because I want to support their product.

A) HBO fears that if they do that then cable companies will refuse to carry HBO which is still the bulk of their income.

B) HBO would have to set up payment means and deal with customers. Something they don't have to worry about right now.

Re: Cut out the middle man

A.) They can certainly price it to a point that will have less impact and I would be willing to bet they gain more consumers than they loss after the dust settles.

B.) Minor thing in today's electronic payment world. If they are streaming they can safely assume you have internet and can pay electronically and/or they can even require that you do it automated just to get the service.

Another solution...

You know, there is another solution - HBO could just drop the whole archaic concept of you must be a subscriber to their legacy channel offering and just make the content available directly to consumers...

Nah, you're right, that would be a bad idea...

Good News For Me

This is yet another reason I don't want Cablevision merging. Big companies get tied up in this nonsense.

Optimum + HBO Go + PS3 = Unlimited viewing of:

Real Time w/ Bill Maher
Vice
True Blood
The Wire
The Sopranos

Once again, at least my MSO gets it right.

One HD HBO channel and no HBO Go in SF bay area...

What's worse is that in some Comcast markets like the San Francisco bay area(2nd largest Comcast market?) they only offer 1 HD channel from HBO, the main channel and HBO Latino. Comcast's OnDemand in this area is also very sorely lacking in available HBO content missing many of the popular series that can all be found on HBO Go.

Re: One HD HBO channel and no HBO Go in SF bay area...

Funny, when the app was announced and released on XBox 360, there was a huge roar from the user base, saying the app didn't work for Xfinity customers, but the Xfinity app had HBO programming... which kinda defeated the purpose. It was a very short wait that Comcast said the app would go be available for XBox users; the catch being that Xfinity app users wouldn't be using their data allotment since it was an extension of their service, but HBOGo streams would count against the data. I use both apps on the XBox, it's whichever is more convenient at the time I'm browsing.

XFinity must have released more Samsung Smart TV accessibility lately; just checked the Smart Hub, the HBOGo app updated and I checked if it allows access to Comcast subscribers. It does now.

....because if Comcast has their way, all of their current video subscribers would pony up the extra $$ per month for their own Strempix service and not HBO Go, Netflix or anything else.

Constant Buffering

Well, I've been using HBO Go on the PS3 app all morning with my AT&T u-verse 18Mpbs download connection and it's been nothing but constant buffering. I don't know if it's the PS3 app or if AT&T is throttling but it's kinda disappointing. It should be noted that the PS3 is directly hardwired to the u-verse router and I have been averaging 20Mbps down on the tier I'm on.

Available on XBox

For whatever strange reason, Xfinity subscribers with Xbox 360s can use HBO Go app as well as Xfinity's TV App for on demand. So is there something going on between Comcast and Sony that no one knows about?

Even though I don't use a Roku, PS3, or HBOGo, this is still another reason that Comcast's take over of Time Warner doesn't go through. I'd rather just enjoy the internet my way, instead of Comcast's.
