HD Voice on AT&T Coming Late 2013
'Part of Our Voice Over LTE Strategy,' Says AT&T
by Karl Bode Tuesday 02-Apr-2013 tags: wireless · alternatives · wireless · AT&T
AT&T has confirmed that their implementation of HD voice will be deployed at the end of 2013 (read: 2014). Speaking to AllThingsD, AT&T senior VP Kris Rinne simply stated that "HD Voice is part of our voice over LTE strategy," though he failed to offer any real specifics. Most carrier deployments of voice over LTE (VoLTE) have been delayed due to the fact that the technology is an incredible battery hog, in some cases reducing overall battery life by 50 percent when placing VoLTE calls. T-Mobile has already deployed HD Voice; their implementation doesn't eat battery life and consumes much less bandwidth (12.65kbps), but doesn't offer quite the same audio fidelity as fully fledged VoLTE will.

Incompatible

The problem is that most current "HD" voice implementations seem to be incompatible; even if two carriers offer "HD" voice, a call between customers of those carriers won't use it.

Re: Incompatible

It isn't a problem if you get all your friends and family to switch to the same carrier.

See how I just turned a problem into a marketing opportunity? And you can believe that the carriers will do the same thing.

Re: Incompatible

Well, there are five distinct cellphone networks in Montreal (excepting the Bell/Telus tower sharing agreements), and that's ignoring the different budget-brands where Bell Canada owns Virgin Mobile, Rogers owns Chatr and Fido, Telus owns Koodo, etc... The chances of all of your friends being on the same network is zero.

Re: Incompatible

Just putting on AMR-Full rate (supportable by GSM spec), or going to AMR-WB (not supportable by all ?) would be a step in the right direction.

Does anybody really need...

... HD voice?
seeing that it's a phone, wouldn't "voice that doesn't suck" be good enough?

Re: Does anybody really need...

I'm 100% with you on that. All I want from a cell phone is a reliable connection and clarity that's clear enough to understand. HD voice is yet another marketing gimmick to relieve you of your hard earned money. Can't people see the trend here? Pay more and more money to get inferior products and services and then trying to market their crappy products services as innovation!

Is it really a gimmick? Because I hear a big difference.

Re: Does anybody really need...

At one time, GSM carriers (AT&T/T-Mobile) used EFR and AMR-Full Rate codecs, which offered GREAT quality audio.

AT&T killed it off early on with HR and AMR-Half Rate (Europe pretty much wouldn't touch Half Rate codecs).

T-Mobile (in many areas) kept AMR-FullRate.
Older GSM phones could be programmed to 'force' AMR-Full Rate (old Nokias/ Motorola RAZR/Vxxx series), and it worked VERY well. No garbles/drops, and audio was VERY good.

Agreed. I want reliability and the ability to actually hear the other person. Anything else is fluff for them to charge you more for...IMHO.

Too late?

With the changes in today's technology and communication habits of consumers, my opinion is that this is just too late. The number of times that I talk on my mobile as compared to texting, using Google Talk or Skype is pretty rare at this point.

One feature lacking is full caller-id with name. Can we get that instead ?

Well, does your car at least turn into something else? Sometimes I turn it into a trashcan. Hmm...
