kudos:19 | Incompatible The problem is that most current "HD" voice implementations seem to be incompatible; even if two carriers offer "HD" voice, a call between customers of those carriers won't use it.

kudos:19 | Re: Incompatible Well, there are five distinct cellphone networks in Montreal (excepting the Bell/Telus tower sharing agreements), and that's ignoring the different budget-brands where Bell Canada owns Virgin Mobile, Rogers owns Chatr and Fido, Telus owns Koodo, etc... The chances of all of your friends being on the same network is zero.

HD voice is yet another marketing gimmick to relieve you of your hard earned money. Can't people see the trend here? | Re: Does anybody really need... At one time, GSM carriers (AT&T/T-Mobile) used EFR and AMR-Full Rate codecs, which offered GREAT quality audio.
AT&T killed it off early on with HR and AMR-Half Rate (Europe pretty much wouldn't touch Half Rate codecs).
T-Mobile (in many areas) kept AMR-FullRate.
Older GSM phones could be programmed to 'force' AMR-Full Rate (old Nokias/ Motorola RAZR/Vxxx series), and it worked VERY well. No garbles/drops, and audio was VERY good. | |
