HP Integrates EVDO in Laptops
Anyone sensing a trend here?
by Karl Bode Friday 06-Jan-2006 tags: wireless · hardware
Earlier this week Lenovo announced they were shipping a laptop with integrated Cingular HSDPA wireless broadband support. HP today announced they'd be shipping laptops with integrated Verizon EVDO wireless broadband support. This comes after a recent announcement by Dell that their laptops would support both. A study earlier this week found such integrated solutions had a lower TCO for mobile workers, and therefore is an attractive option for businesses.

3G bandwagon growing; Wimax dying off

Looks like most vendors are jumping on the 3G bandwagon integrating access to the major wireless providers offerings. But Intel's older push for Wimax looks to be dying on the vine. I guess the marketplace is picking the winner and Intel isn't it.

This week. A month from now, they might be doing the exact opposite and putting Wimax chips on their laptops. Too early to tell, IMHO.

Wimax is superior. Cellphone towers are here already.

I don't want my laptop tied to one carrier!

If HP released a laptop that could only access the internet through AOL people would laugh, but it's exactly the same thing.

Simple. Don't buy a laptop with that feature. It is not on all their laptops. Besides, it doesn't stop you from disabling it and using a PCMIA card for another service.

wooha

big deal, I agree w/previous post about still being able to disable and use whatever other pcmcia card/services you would want to... this is simply integrating another feature, that you probably don't have to get on your laptop if you don't want. either way, it's pretty cool that it works at all.
intel's wimax probably will be better someday, who knows.

by then they might just go ahead and release the direct matrix style connection via some huge BNC connector on the back of your head... wirelessly of course, with speeds as fast as fiber..

too late

HP's offering isn't going to stand up. The Lenovo is amazing and since they are going to offer Verizon or Cingular it's going to be the top contender. I've also seen Dell's pre production model and it is terrible, the wireless doesn't even work because of the CDMA\EVDO interference.

What's the problem with Verizon BTW? I hate their voice but their unlimited EVDO is amazing, it's the live blood of our sales force.

I am confused by your "interference" statement. Would you care to explain your assertion?

Re: too late

From what we are able to gather on this laptop the issue is due to the fact that the two antennas are routed around the monitor right next to each other. It has caused the EVDO to work just fine, but for some reason our wireless is sporadic at best and usually will not connect at all, even when right below our access point antenna, the only thing we can attribute this to is either. A)dell cheaped out on their wireless again (previous model has no problems connecting) B) the new "pre-production" model's CDMA\EVDO is "playing well" correctly with the wireless

Offer cards, not computers.

If the computer has a problem with the hardware, the providers is going to tell you that you are basically out of luck, contact the manufacturer. At least with pcmia cards they can be replaced.

Lower TCO

I would like to know who sponsored Ian Gillott's TCO research on EV-DO. As they say, "follow the money".

There is no white paper on his website, no links on where this study can be found. I want to know who funded it before I take it as gospel.

Also the article only said TCO for EV-DO was compared to smartphones. There is a huge difference between someone getting a data feed on an always-on phone and someone pulling a laptop out of a bag and booting up. People simply don't carry laptops "always-on" at their hip.

Linking this EV-DO research with recent laptop integration announcements is a reach at best. Apples & Oranges.

850 MHz + 1900 MHz carriers' EVDO

I used an HP for a few months and appreciated the ergonomic considerations above those of Dell and Toshiba, so I am really excited about the addition of EVDO to the existing integrated WiFi.

HP - please use a dual frequency EVDO module for the inclusion of 1900 MHz EVDO as well as your 850 MHz EVDO.

The 850 MHz will enable all the rural cellular CDMA operators' customers to use the integrated EVDO, too, so this is not just about Verizon. In fact, this is not just about the USA! CDMA 850 MHz already exists throughout South American and Caribbean Nations. Many will be adding EVDO within the next year. EVDO is the most efficient means of providing Internet to rural customers, as the antennae and base station sites are already there.

The addition of 1900 MHz would open the door for Sprint, Cricket, and other 1900 MHz operators' customers.

Integrated EVDO may not mean much to folks willing to seek out the nearest Panera for free WiFi, but for those of us who are on the road for work, EVDO is the best thing since the notebook 'puter.
