HP Reselling Sprint 3G Service at Steep Premium
Plans Range From $5 for 75 MB to $30 for 1 GB
HP has jumped into the MVNO business, and has started selling users Sprint EVDO in prepaid plans for their HP laptops. The service, dubbed "Datapass," has been outsourced to Penegrine Networks and costs a steep premium over other prepaid options. The no-contract plans start at $5 for just 75MB, which HP says is enough for about five hours of use, and stretch up to $30 for 1GB. The company website offers a complete list of plans, a user guide (pdf) and coverage map if you're looking for more detail. The company is also offering a free trial of the service that offers 100MB of usage (or fourteen days) for free.

Why would anyone buy these plans?

There are other prepaid options out there that are cheaper than what HP is offering here. Not sure at all why HP is getting in to this marketing effort; unless they are preparing something similar for all the new smartphones they are releasing this summer. Maybe they will have lower prices for their smartphone plans than they are for the laptop plans just announced.

Well T-Mobile charges $50/mo for just 1Gb of data so that's not really so bad in comparison.

Datapass

Hmmm, drop the second "a" and the "p", and we have an internet Meme...

No really, I didn't go there. I just read it that way on first glance.
Doubtless it will be repeated many many many times.
Oh HP, you so funny.

End Users are not bright....

This is probably the idea of some executive who knows that most end users are stupid.

Not that bad

Ok, the lower plans are a rip off, but the 1GB plan isn't that bad. A month's worth of light usage for $30?

What I'd really like to see though is smartphones with tethering enabled, so that everything is just done through one plan with 2GB of data, so that you wouldn't have a bunch of different devices with different plans- oh wait I already do it, it's just not AT&T authorized .

The problem is.. It's running on Sprint's network. Which means for around that price you get 5GB or Unlimited if you went through Sprint.

This is a freakin' ripoff and a half and is much worse than at&t. So, for $5 you get to download 75MB worth of stuff on the Internet. How the hell do you get 5 hours from that?

Then there's the 1GB plan. Still a ripoff considering you can tether your phone to your laptop for the same price and get between 2 and 5GB per month.

How do you get 5GB through Sprint with that unless you have a phone with them?

Don't need a phone. You can use a Mobile Broadband Adapter to connect.

Looks like Sprint's going Unlimited on 4G and 5GB on 3G. Interesting.

A rip off, just like the rest of HP products

This is more of a rip off than AT&Ts 2GB data plan for $25. wow, HP has gone totally mainstream, and are expecting consumers to be stupid, or expect the service to fail. I am guessing a bit of both, really. Consumers are really stupid, example: Go buy a Mac or MBP to put windows on it.-- that happens a lot. HP is also the worst brand of 2010, with 60% failure rate within 2 years, and 40% within 1.

Well, the decision was already screwed when they picked up the MBP.

All kidding aside, I don't find this to be a good example - but more so a consumer choice. Is it really that bad that Apple customers have the option to run a different OS on their system?

Huh???

We buy only HP servers at $DAYJOB on a regular basis because they are practically bulletproof. We've lost Dell servers. We've lost Intel SR series servers.

But we've never, ever, lost an HP server.

(by "lost" I mean "failed")

Very big difference between enterprise level and consumer level products also. The feature in the article is clearly a consumer grade product, and a lack luster one at best. HP and Dell also buy a lot of their components from the same manufacturer in China as well, Foxconn, they are both nearly the same end product in many cases.

HP really how could you!

Think that were all idiots, Me personally as an A+, NET+, MCSE I own and am typing this on my HP elite book so know Im an avid HP user. Now as for HP's regular notebooks and desktop there no better than any other brand and have the same turnover rate as any PC out there. However with that said I only purchase there business notebooks, they carry a better warranty and much better support than any other PC brand I've dealt with.. Dell, emachines, lenovo, gateway, toshiba, etc. and Ive had them all. I purchased a $700 hp Probook when the mouse bad wore out and my power supply went they picked up my probook and sent me a $2500 elitebook for my troubles.
Now on to this data pricing, HP surely must intend on this package being for the supper rich, the business exec, with money to burn, or the real obvious buffoon who has no common scenes, for anyone with half a Brain at all can add and subtract and comparison shop to see this data price plan stinks. If you want to use data you better know how to read its pricing.

It's called "convenience". Buy laptop, take out of box and insert battery, push power button, double click on IE...You're connected to the internet

Or they could be counting on their "brand recognition", whereby people will pay a premium price thinking the service must be "better" because it's from HP.

(without considering that it's just rebranded Sprint)

Market Rates

These are itinerant, prepaid rates, with no overage charges, aimed at business buyers. They are perfectly reasonable. Where is the "steep premium" ? Who sells a day pass for less than $5? Who sells a month of standalone 3G for less than $30?

HP is simply giving their customers one-stop shopping,

HP always make pricing mistakes

They never learn.

Looks like they're preparing a data plan for the TouchPad based on webOS.

Right! For the upcoming products....

Set a retail high and then offer packages with products. Pre2 and TouchPad. Actually a not so bad marketing idea.

But the thing that really bothers me is that they teamed up with Sprint which may forshadow a partnership exclusive of Verizon which is the much better network. [yes vzw patron].
