HTC Google Chrome Tablet On Verizon In November
To be offered subsidized with long-term Verizon contract
by Karl Bode Wednesday 18-Aug-2010 tags: business · bandwidth
We've already noted that Motorola is building an Android-based tablet to be sold by Verizon later this year, with functionality tied to FiOSTV. Now come reports that HTC is building a Chrome-driven tablet computer for Verizon that will launch on November 26. Tablet mania has clearly infected many ISPs, who will either be offer TV Everywhere Internet video apps for tablets (Comcast, Cablevision, AT&T, Time Warner Cable) -- or offering tablets themselves later this year. Much like the recent netbook craze, expect ISPs to give these things away at a subsidized price point if you sign a long-term wireless broadband contract.

Update: Verizon today also expanded on their iPad application ambitions today in great detail.

Too bad it is tied to Verizon

I want one that is not tied to anything. WiFi is good enough for what I want to use it for but I do not like Verizon Wireless at all.

Care to elaborate? Too bad about your negative experiences but I've been a customer of theirs for more than 10 years now and aside from one single negative (billing) the service has been great otherwise. I have their POTS, Wireless and FiOS services.

They made a mistake on my girlfriend's bill making her the secondary number and mine the primary. When we signed up together, it was her account and she was the only one on it. We were told by the sales monkey that we were also part of the "New Every 2" program where BOTH of of handsets were upgradeable. Well, when we tried to upgrade the phones, we were told that only the number paying $39.99/month or more was eligible and not the add-on number. So I was willing to let my girlfriend have the upgrade. Then, they told me my number was the main and not hers. They even admitted their mistake but told me the only way to fix it was to keep our phones and sign up for another 2 years. When I told them that was unacceptable, they said, "You can leave if that is your prerogative." We left and they begged us to come back and even held a port over of a number for a week.

Second incident: Girlfriend had FIOS and cancelled it after the contract was up. Nope, she was signed up automatically and charged a $175 early termination fee. They sent it to collections in under 90 days and that took 2 hours of legal threats to get that taken off.

And before you say anything else, I had their DSL (twice), POTS and now have FIOS where I got slammed with some $14.95/month fax service charge by an outside company that can't tell me how I got signed up.

Verizon does this all the time. Third party billing. They must get a cut because they refuse to block it and you can call the 3rd party biller who promises to fix it but never does.

Re: Too bad it is tied to Verizon

FiOS Digital Voice does not allow 3rd party billing, so if you don't want any extra charges nor have a need to receive collect calls or make 900 calls, that would solve your problem. And yes they can block 3rd party billing even if you have regular POTS.

Jeez...I would be upset too. VZ's billing was BAD a few years ago...mine was kind of a similar issue albeit not to that extent. I think they have made some improvements now. I am on their ONE BILL and so far in a couple of years no screw ups.

Maybe worth considering....

... if it supports WiFi and I can tether it to my Sprint phone. I also hope it's a bit smaller than the iPad, maybe 7". Those things still look pretty darned awkward to me.

Smaller would be good, but cheaper would be best. I bought my first HTC phone (Incredible) when it came out in April. I love it. I'd be interested in seeing another winner from HTC on Verizon in the form of a tablet.

I as well have the Incredible, and really am enjoying it... I've been looking for a good Android tablet for quite some time, so this might be what I've been waiting for...

Google Tablets: Android or Chrome ?

Google should settle on which OS it is going to push for on tablets.

»techland.com/2010/08/18/chrome-o···ovember/
Chrome OS tablet will have a Tegra 2 processor, 1280x720 multi-touch display, 2GB of RAM, at least a 32GB SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/3G, GPS and a webcam. Memory might be expandable through a multi-card reader.

So we've heard that the fabled Google tablet will either be running Android or Chrome OS. It could honestly go either way but wouldn't it be counterproductive, too? News out of GDC Europe indicates the Chrome web store will be launched in October. Doesn't that directly compete with the Android Market? Isn't Android 3.0 supposed to be a tablet-specific OS?

Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google. That doesn't really make things any more clear, does it?
Sounds like Google is going to keep a foot in each OS and see what sticks. That fits with the beta philosophy of Google. Wait to see what survives and then kill what doesn't gain acceptance.

I'm betting on Android surviving and Chrome OS dying in time.

Another point of view on Android vs Chrome OS:

I hope the tablet runs a tablet specific Android. Chrome OS should be saved for regular computers.
