Vulnerabilities in the new product are being explored
(old news - 11:24AM Saturday Jan 13 2007)
tags: hardware · security · spam
With new products come new ways to manipulate those products and hackers are losing no time in finding the vulnerabilities of the iPhone. PC Advisor reports that bugs in the system should be easy for hackers to find because of the familiarity of the operating system combined with the newness of the technology. Hackers may be able to spread malware through the iPhone as well as to use the bugs found to "exploit Apple's computers". With the Cisco lawsuit, the lack of broadband available on the phones, and these new concerns about hackers, the popularity of the iPhone is looking a little bit shaky.

Not an apple fan boy...

but I think the prognostication about this phone being a flop is a little shortsighted. I wouldn't use it because it doesn't fit my needs. However with the amount of people who have razors, chocolates and other IMHO poorly thought-out /working phones, I can't see calling this ones popularity "shaky" because of a few missing features.

What I (and BBR users) like/demand in products and what the general masses buy are often very different...

"iDon't think so

First of all, to use the iPhone you need to use Apple's iTunes software, and with it Apple's FairPlay (ha!) digital rights management scheme. It means dealing with a product that — despite what Mac fanatics say — is fraught with problems. That's why so many are installing Rockbox instead.

At this point it isn't clear whether anyone but Apple will be allowed to create applications for the iPhone, although it does run OSX. At the start, though, it will only do what Apple allows it to. As with all things Apple, it's their way or the highway, and right now that doesn't include supporting Word or Excel files, so business users may want to look elsewhere."

After owning a supposed "multimedia" phone, I won't buy another one. I have both MP3 and Video capabilities on the phone I have now, and I almost never use it. I never use the MP3 capability, and I rarely use the video.

I do use the mobile internet a lot, and plan on getting a Treo or a blackberry as my next phone.

I'm a self admitted Apple fan, but at $500 I don't see an iPhone in my future.

Where the $#%@ have you been? Mac OS X has been using Office docs for years. If there is anything to be limited on the iPhone, I would bet it will be cell carriers who will do it. They are notorious for that.

This whole article is hilarious. How can they possibly speculate on a handheld that nobody (much less the hacking community) has ever even seen up close? And while OS X isn't perfect, it does enjoy a reputation for being one of the most secure and stable OS available!

It's stable and secure because it's built on top of a UNIX derivative, not because Apple is that adept at securing its OS.

The only way FairPlay is going to impact that iPhone is if users purchase content through the iTunes store - you can still fill the device with your own music and videos and there will be no copy protections whatsoever.

I, personally, am somewhat anti-DRM, but his complaint regarding DRM applies to ALL manufacturers who allow their devices to play purchased content. Considering the fact that the iPod is the leading portable music player (whether you believe they deserve that position or not) demonstrates that the FairPlay DRM is not stopping people from buying the device. How this author thinks that FairPlay is "fraught with problems" versus other protection schemes is beyond me.

EDIT "That's why so many people are installing Rockbox instead."

Define "so many users." Up until now, I have never seen anyone using Rockbox on their portable audio players, let alone it being mentioned in a popular publication. Ask the average iPod user what FairPlay is and they won't have a clue - it simply isn't an issue for most users.

Re: Not an apple fan boy...

You appear to know NO teenagers. As a youth minister I have noticed that almost all my kids are using alternatives to iTunes. They dont seem to agree on which to use, but they dont like or user iTunes. The few that do use iTunes do so because they have some "reason" not to use 3rd party applications. Things like "My parents wont let me because they like iTunes" and "I dont wanna screw up my iPod" are the most common reasons.

Re: Not an apple fan boy...

The article was referring to replacement of the actual iPod firmware, not the iTunes software. I'll give you this - unlike iTunes on OS X, iTunes on Windows is relatively resource-hungry. If a system isn't running in tip-top shape, iTunes can falter. For that reason, I can understand people using alternatives to iTunes while on Windows.

I stand by what I said earlier - I have never seen any iPod user using an alternative firmware on the device over the past five years.

You may be correct. I think the masses however will avoid this phone due to the $500-600 price tag plus being chained to Cingular for two years; I know that is the reason I am.

I'm on Cingular (came over from AT&T) and I have no problems with them. They have great service everywhere I go, have good phones, and have reasonable prices. (NOTE - Your milage will vary). But the $500-$600 price ON TOP OF a contract is just WAY to expensive. My question is, why didn't Apple put UMTS and HSDPA support? Cingular already has a device that WILL support it for less money. I don't mind using the Pocket PC OS as I have been using it for several years. I currently have a PPC-6700 through Sprint that was provided by my company. I'm mainly saying, wait a while, the price might come down, and Apple might unteather from Cingular and go with TMobile as well. Apple said they have NO plans on making the phone in any other technology than GSM (which is a world standard) meaning Sprint, Verizon won't ever get this phone.

Isn't this the story of Apple's life they come out with fantastic stuff but put it at a price point that scares people off, a 7 series BMW is a great car put if you have a KIA pocket book it just isn't going to happen,

The iphone isn't fantastic. I bought a dell axim 2 years ago and it plays movies, mp3s, and runs third party apps and games. Sure it's not a cellphone, but they have cellphones that run the same windows mobile OS. I can bet with 100% certainty that those phones which have probably been out for years are way better than the iphone.

PC Advisor?

What rag is this and what is the point in running an article about the "possible" security implications of a product that no one has actually seen yet???

It reads like some reporter hopped into an irc channel with a bunch of 14 year old "hackers" and wrote an article based on their babbling.

Nothing more than another iPod phone

Why bother Hacking or even owning the iPhone unless your under Steve Jobs mind control .The iPhone doesn't have a real version of OSX,there will be no Dev kit and its essentially a fancy cell phone that has iPod features .

Holy crap! Now that's more like it. Why wasn't the Neo1973 plastered all over every tech site when it was announced? That thing beats the iPhone to dust. Apple innovation my ass. The iPhone is a toy compared to that and it's an actual product, not some unreleased demo. I may have to get a Neo1973 just to see what it can do...

I think your blind hatred of Apple has clouded your judgement:

-it's not available for sale yet
-wimpy memory
-no bluetooth
-no wi-fi
-small screen
-unless you put MickeySoft on it, no real apps (I'm sure they're "coming soon" though!)
-no 3G
-likely to have very laggy graphics compared to the demos of the iPhone

But it's great, because Apple didn't make it!

This Article is a Joke

What is this doing on the front page? The article is pure speculation and poorly written. I am also an Apple fan (disclaimer) but this article offers absolutely nothing other than speculation on a product that hasn't even been released yet.

"The familiarity of the operating system" should make it an easy target for hackers? What the hell does that mean? If the argument that OS X's main security advantage over Windows is its obscurity is to be believed (I sure as hell don't believe it) then there is very little familiarity of the operating system to begin with.

Add to that the fact that Cisco may have lost its rights to the "iPhone" trademark last year, and suddenly it looks like much of the anti-iPhone ranting is mostly off-base.

The lack of 3G is a legitimate dissapointment, but Steve Jobs has already announced that feature will be included in future versions. Hell, for all we know, it may be part of the iPhone by the time it is released.

This ranting about how the iPhone is sure to be a market failure reminds me of iPod bashing that occurred in 2001 when that device was first released.

All IMHO, of course.

Big difference between a phone and an ipod.

Check back in 2 years to see where the phone stands and how many customers are willing to pony up big bucks for the inevitable iTrade up for new versions.

Now where did I put that handy dandy iPhone iAnything battery replacement tool.

Re: This Article is a Joke

Are you referring to Apple's frequent product release cycle, or just the fact that it doesn't have a user-replaceable battery?

Given the choice, I agree: I would prefer a user replaceable battery. But to be honest, that didn't seem to matter to most people with the iPod - and it turns out that self-replacement of the iPod battery isn't that difficult after all.

For all we know, it may end up being Apple and Cingular will offer affordable replacement of batteries in-store by their technicians. It's too late to pass much judgement at all on the iPhone (whether positive or negative) until it hits the market.

And who keeps a phone for more than two years anyway?

Re: This Article is a Joke

Actually both apply.

That is why I said check back in 2 years after the phone is on the market and the cottage Industries kick in.

Why should a company (not just Apple) that could easily make batteries user replaceable chose to make it hard so they can garner a few extra bucks on servicing the device?

Just smacks of cheesiness to me.
