Half of San Francisco Now Covered by Meraki Solar-powered wi-fi and muni WiMax in the works Meraki has been working to cover the city of San Francisco with Wi-Fi repeaters that will ultimately provide free citywide Internet service in a project dubbed Free The Net. There isnt a whole lot of news published about the service due in large part to the fact that the company doesnt pay for advertising and instead relies primarily on word-of-mouth to spread the service. Despite this, the service is spreading. Over half of the city is now covered and over 100,000 people are using the service (see real-time usage map). With investments from Google, Meraki has been able to make some innovative moves including using solar-powered repeaters and looking at ways to start implementing WiMax into their networks in the near future. Although the company is best-known for its efforts to blanket San Francisco with Wi-Fi, they work internationally and have launched networks in place as different as Cape Horn and Iceland.

I download over 1 TB a month sometimes on my residential connection And what happens when the ISPs start using caps? Your profligate downloading will start costing you real money.
And will people be willing to offer bandwidth to strangers if it will push them over the caps and cost them extra money? That is the potential weakness in this Meraki network.
P.S. Sharing the bandwidth is legal because Meraki only deals with people whose ISP allows sharing:
Is this legal?
Absolutely! Free the Net works with service providers that allow the sharing of broadband access. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page Ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya punk?

But how long will it continue when ISPs get wise to the fact that users are letting others share their connections?
It's a business model built on top of stolen bandwidth, so that doesn't seem real sustainable.

I"m missing something, right? Actually, for years now... lighting up a laptop just about anywhere in S.F. would get you a signal. Mostly the Cafes, but some other establishments as well. So, now with this Meraki stuff everywhere, S.F. is lit!
I had fun one time when I was invited over to TechTV to help out in a "New Forum Layout" that was being planned. You bet I took my laptop with me. I stopped for coffee - yep! Wi-Fi.
Walked the City for a few before my appointment, I counted 5(five) unique APs on several blocks - ALL LEGALLY OFFERED! We will not discuss the open APs I also seen...
So, now we have Meraki pounding the streets as well? Oh HELL YES!
Even CNET offers free WiFi! »www.wififreespot.com/ca.html

They had the guy that made the devices and company on some show with Leo Laporte a while back and explained how they work and stuff. Interesting concept, but to anyone who buys their devices, when the company goes belly-up so does your network since all the management an live graphs and whatever else it has is run by them and cant be changed unless you modify the firmware. -- call me on FWD: 654674

The important line is "An appeals court in Germany has ruled that the owners of a network are not responsible for the copyright infringement of their users."
