How about pwning poker players online while drinking a few brews? It's a close call.

Frontier to do caps, tiers, and overage fees next year

Looks like 1 more ISP will be joining the ranks charging large overage fees.

»tech.yahoo.com/news/ap/20081031/···_charges
Frontier Communications Co. will probably charge its subscribers a dollar or two per gigabyte of Internet traffic if they go over the monthly allotments the company plans to introduce next year, Frontier's chief executive said Friday.

The company caused confusion and some dismay among customers earlier this year, when it said it would charge for Internet use above 5 gigabytes per month, starting next year.

Frontier was looking at providing higher monthly limits, perhaps 20 gigabytes per month, in more urban markets like Rochester and Elk Grove, Calif., where usage is higher than rural areas.

The company will also sell plans with higher download caps for higher prices, Wilderotter told The Associated Press, at increments like 10, 20 and 50 gigabytes.

"All networks are going to have to move to that paradigm in order to stay profitable," Wilderotter said at a conference in New York.

"The business model that we're using today really has our light users subsidizing our heavy users," she said.

Re: Halloween costume video

Well, I had Indy Jones (age 14), a Titans football player (age 11), and a Transformer (age 9) at my house this evening. Sorry, no pictures. They were my last 3 grandsons (out of 6)...other 3 are 17/17&17(twins). Twins are out-of-state (Virginia).
I've haven't given out candy here since 1995...the 'population' grew from 100 kids in the area to almost the entire city of Lorain! No way was I spending $$$ to give to these other kids, especially since most of them shouldn't be out trick-or-treating anyway!!!

Where have all the Trick Or Treaters gone?

I don't know, it just seems like the day has lost something. I remember when there were constant kids stopping by for candy and I have to say that today, there were perhaps 4 separate groups between 5 pm and now (EDT) and that's it!.
Perhaps kids have migrated to the malls to get candy because there are no road hazards and less walking involved.

I can't speak for everywhere, but we used to get 70 to 100 kids on Halloween 10 years ago. The last couple years it was down to less than 10. It just isn't worth it anymore.

Everyone is so worried now about their kids being out on the street after dark and worried about what the kids get. Local communities discourage it and hold Halloween events at schools and local libraries. It looks like this is just 1 more thing that has been killed off by fear about how dangerous the world is supposed to be now.

Re: Where have all the Trick Or Treaters gone?

Yup, I remember as a kid during the cro-magnon age we would rush home from school to get in some candy gathering time before dinner. We would go home, dump the candy into a big bowl and then go back out till at least 9 pm. This was in New York City.
I was never abducted, threatened, nor was there ever a fear of it happening.
I do think those few unfortunate times when they put the razor blades in the apples and poisoned some of the candy did have a negative effect on the occasion forever.....
Another thing ruined by society...

So yes, I would not let my kids do what I once did in many aspects.

Sad commentary.

And to finish the thread about society and Halloween....

"Superman Robbed My House"
Man answers door to trick-or-treaters, gets robbed

A Long Island man was slugged and his home robbed after he answered his front door to three costumed men -- including one dressed as Superman -- who were pretending to be trick-or-treaters, police said.

The Spanish-speaking robbers forced their way into the man's home on Girard Place in Merrick Friday night and bound him, according to cops. The victim hit in the head and the suspects took off with cash they found inside the home.

After the costumed robbers fled, the victim was able to free himself and go to a neighbor's house for help, police said.

The Halloween night home invasion is under investigation. The victim was treated for a minor laceration to the head.

We used to get dozens in the 80s here. Close to 100 before the night was up. We got 8 today.

It's a nice day today, about 60 degrees.

I think it's a combination of the fact that kid's rarely go outside anymore to do anything, only to go places. And, issue with parents feeling scared that kid's might be abducted or whatever.

The world is a changin...Although I think every generation has a little bit of that "when I was a kid...."

Nobody at my house either. Weather's fine. Haven't had anyone here in the last few years. It's not exactly off the beaten path, but it's a little difficult because there's no sidewalks. I've been buying the stuff I like because I'll be eating it later.

Maybe everyone is still partying from the Phillies, including me.

I remember growing up at the University California campus (80s).. It was wild!

The street was full of people at 8-midnight. The entire neighborhood surrounding us was decorated and candies was just about everywhere you turn.

I'm glad i was around when people took halloween seriously!

No kids at my house tonight

I'm going out as a vampire tonight and most likely go to a "halloween theme" club tonight.

It's not as lively as when I was a kid, but we did still have quite a few visitors tonight. Maybe 50-60 between 6:00 and 8:00. Not too bad. Had some decent costumes too.

I know something was going on downtown but that seems to only have delayed the kids showing up in our neighborhood.

Funny thing is, when I was a kid, it was common that people had their pumpkins taken and smashed on the street after Halloween (not that it mattered much because they were going to be thrown out anyway). These days around here, it just doesn't happen. For Halloween, I'd almost expect someone to take my pumpkin. Growing up, it was almost like an "offering". So I guess some things are getting more tame. I bet mine will still be on the front porch in the morning.

Re: Where have all the Trick Or Treaters gone?

I remember the pumpkin smashing days.

When I was in my late teens we used to set a trap for rowdy kids. We would get a bunch of pumpkins, set one or two out in the open, and camp on the roof of the house with a fully charged and ready to spray hose. When the fools did their dirty deed we got'em with the water. Not fun being soaking wet on a chilly October evening.

I always did this at a friend's house, as I never wanted to give anyone a chance for revenge.

I agree it is a combination of things. At my old place, I got maybe 30, but here in a different apartment complex, I am lucky to see 10, but the last few years I have not seen any at my door. I have seen some costumed kids today but they were heading with their parents to the car. I think mall and other events became the in thing. A far cry when we, an army of kids, were swarming the neighborhood, then going to the post Halloween celebration afterwards in the 60’s. This is the last year for me. If I am around I will just keep a few candy bars around but I am not make staying home for the kids a priority.

Update: Speak of the devil or two as soon as I post this there was a knock at the door, I had five kids. I made sure they took half of the candy.

Nielsen finds strong TV-Internet usage overlap

»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081031/en_···internet
Nearly a third of all household Internet activity in North America takes place while the user watches television, suggesting new and old media often share rather than compete for attention, the Nielsen Company said in a report on Friday.

In fact, the study found that heavy Internet users are among the most dedicated of TV viewers, spending more than 250 hours a month in front of the tube, compared with the 220 hours of television watched by people who never go online.

While 31 percent of in-home online activity occurs at the same time the user is watching TV, the lion's share of all household TV viewership -- almost 96 percent -- takes place apart from the Internet, the Nielsen study found.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, a higher percentage of teenage TV viewing coincides with Internet use, 5.4 percent compared with 3.8 percent for the general population, Nielsen found.
For myself for example, I watch a baseball or football game on TV and then use the internet at the same time to track the ongoing stats at nfl.com or mlb.com.

We are the World Champions !!

Yes, it's real. The Phillies have won the world series. Or, if you've heard Chase Utley's speech at the parade today, we're the World F'ing Champions!!!

I was at Game 5. Monday. Wednesday. In-freaking-credible.

What's really great is that Sarah Palin did NOT throw out the first pitch. She dropped the ceremonial puck for the Flyers home opener a few weeks ago. They went 0-6.

I can't stand Philadelphia fans. I'll give them the fact that they have passion for their sports teams, but in general, they are the sourest bunch of people on the planet.

Man Bowls Perfect Game, Dies Immediately

Man Bowls Perfect Game, Dies Immediately

Last round.

He had belonged to the same team at a bowling alley for 45 years, and he had just rolled a 300 for his first perfect game.

Then Don Doane collapsed on the floor while high-fiving his Nutt Farm teammates. The 62-year-old bowler from Ravenna was taken to a hospital but couldn't be saved. A medical examiner said a heart attack was the cause of death.

Jim Nutt spoke with Grand Rapids TV stations WOOD and WZZM about his friend and teammate, who collapsed Oct. 16 at Ravenna Bowl. Nutt says Doane had many friends at the bowling alley and it's strange not seeing him on league nights.

Happy Halloween.....

We got a whole 2 hours to take our son trick or treating and maybe 5 houses on each block were handing out candy. I wish it was like when I was growing up back in the 80's where a pillow case was still not enough room for all the candy we would get. Can't complain about the weather, mid 60's is good trick or treating weather. Happy Halloween everyone!!

L4D should be awesome, but some parts of it (particularly versus mode) feel like Zombie Panic: Source spruced up. I'm sure it'll be great, Valve wouldn't bother releasing it otherwise.

I still do want to pre-order it, but debating between the boxed and steam version (they're the same pretty much, sans getting a really creepy box cover to look at on your bookshelf).

Also, there was controversy over Valve partnering with EA (baron of super evil DRM) on Amazon (although it has been quashed I hear. EA is only the physical distributor). People seem to have been tagging it thinking it is DRM'd (aside from Steam's implied DRM).

i just went ahead and preordered it via steam. it saves me the time of going out and finding the best deal for retail. i'm not sure how its going to work for the retail, but previous valve retail products all you have to do is register the serial number in steam and it downloads it. so regardless it all goes through steam.
