Handheld Television...
at two frames per second?
(old news - 06:27PM Thursday Nov 13 2003)
tags: wireless · hardware
A choppy version of the Discovery Channel on your mobile phone? Sprint says yes. At the International Telecommunication Union conference recently, there was no shortage of opinions on how to make wireless handhelds more appealing to consumers. Many attendees put their weight behind incorporating mobile broadcast satellites into their networks, delivering TV and music programs to handsets (see EETimes report).

Sprint has apparently followed through on such promises, and began offering a MobiTV service this week. For $9.99 per month plus connection charges, users can view somewhat choppy (one or two frames per second) television programming from the major networks, as well as from MSNBC, Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel (Associated Press).

While the "cool factor" is high, it's hard to see how these services will take off until third generation networks are deployed. As a stop-gap measure, some manufacturers are planning on including traditional television tuners in their latest handsets.

Pablum for the masses

Do people really need to access TV channels that badly?

I could possibly understand the latest business news or news for your area in time of disasters... but Discovery?

Guess I just don't see it flying. But heck, I watch about 3 hours of TV a week at home!

Re: Pablum for the masses

I'm right there with ya man. I don't need all this BS on a PHONE. I remember watching a movie some time ago about 2 people that grew up without being around people. The whole world was that way at that point. Everyone telecommuted and such. Something happened and they needed to get our of their building and ended up talking to each other or something and etc,,, you get the picture.

I wonder if we are moving in the direction faster than we know.

Ok, first disclaimer... I'm a serious tech toy geek.

That said, every criticism noted in this thread will be discarded the next time "something" major "happens" and everyone will be standing over your shoulder in the office or wherever you are that you don't have access to a TV, watching the events of the world unfold.

Would I buy a mini TV to lug around for these rare occasions. Nope. Would I pay a bit to have this on something I already lug around? You betcha.

Sweet

Even though it sounds pretty poor quality, it's a start. But do we really need to take TV with us?

I can see it now. Dad takes son to park to play. "Hey dad get off the bench and lets toss the football!" "In a minute, son. I didn't know this show was going to be on."

Bahh..WIll never work

I have Sprint and I tried a service where they had frames going along at 1 every 10 seconds and an audio newscast that went with the pictures. It sucked.

If they want TRUE Video, Sprint needs to Upgrade to FULL Next Gen CDMA and ditch the cheesy Phones they have now.

On Sprint PCS as well, it takes me ten minutes to send "Hi there" to friends via SMS......can only imagine the joy and cost of watching MSNBC at a frame per second. Frankly I'd rather listen to the radio if I'm that stoked for news on the go.....

I always got a kick out of that. Any form of messaging across cell phones in the States takes an undetermined amount of time -- anywhere between a minute to 3 or 4 hours.

The Kiwis have a service called Xtra (albeit not something I'd invest in). I was blown away when I sent a message to a friend of mines cell phone -- from a web interface -- and it arrived in literally 2 seconds.

What is it going to take for Americans to learn that cell phones are worthless piles of overpriced junk? Oh well, I guess this is what commercialism gets us...

That's strange. I can send msgs through AOL IM, Yahoo, ICQ and MSN on Sprint with my Treo 600 pretty darn quickly.

I can also stream music with pocket tunes...

Watch live TV? I just encode a Divx movie and watch it while I'm waiting for a friend somewhere or wherever.

Why?

I just don't understand the need for a TV "fix" every where you go.

I have gone backpacking and come upon people with boom-boxes blaring.

I have seen kids in the back of mini-vans watching movies who are just going across the street to the grocery store.

Are Americans and their children so messed up that they have to be plugged in to media telling them what to buy, what to eat, what to drink, what to wear, that they can't think for themselves?

When you are at a game. College games are really like that. Ever been to a college game and there was a "disputed call" or some such and you KNOW that the TV commentators are doing an instant replay?

I know for a FACT that Sprint PCS sucks

And how do I know? Simple. I live in KC. Sprint is based in OP KS. The Sprint World HQ is right across from my favorite movie theater, I have several friends who still work there and they cannot get a PCS signal from Sprint the instant they turn onto Nall from 435. Oddly enough my ATT phone works great there.....

Completely useless

What is the point of that? They should just stop wasting so much time and money on all this useless garbage on cell phones! Like I'm going to pay 25 cents for a stupid text message(Rogers, Canada).

What is wrong with just having a phone to TALK ON?

The only thing they could add that's useful is 3Mbit or higher connection for a laptop or something.

It is useless. Phones are for talking. While sometimes having a picture phone is nice. (taking pictures of drunk friends). You don't need it.

TV at 2fps would be horrible. I could not stand watching it.

Not so bad

As I type this I'm watching the cartoon network on my Sanyo 8100. Is it worth 10 a month? I dunno... I'll let you know in a few days. The cool factor is indeed up there. The sound is superior, the video, as already mentioned is "choppy" but it's not unwatchable or unenjoyable. I'll take a video of the program in action on my phone and post it in a few for a real world look at what it actually appears as.

But in my opin. a huge step n the right direction.

And as promised here's a sample of what you'd be getting with a program such as this. Image quality is crip, but I can't seem to get the cam to pick that up as well as I hoped, but at least you get an idea as to how it looks framerate wise. As for volume, it's MUCH louder, can be heard from the next room over just have it turned down right now, and the mic on this cam isn't exactly the best thing in the world.

So all in all, I suppose this is a bad example.. but it will at least make judging the product a "bit" easier.

Sprint PCS Vision - What Vision?

Got Scammed!
I bought a Novatel Wireless c201 cdma card back at the beginning of july and ordered unlimited PCS Vision for $80.00 per month. Back in august I received my first bill for over $1500.00 and I contacted Sprint's so called (Customer Solutions Experts?) and they promised to credit the $1500.00 and change my account over to another PCS Vision package, since they ditched the unlimited plan back in july. Ovcourse my account balance and plan have never been corrected, even after I've spent well over 10 hour's on the phone and sent going on a hundred message's via Sprint's online form. My current balance is $3214.70,due on 11/17/2003 even though I was promised again on 11/05 that I would receive a full credit and they would turn on my Audiovox CDM9100SP in place of the wireless card. Before I stopped using the c201 card, I was paying 2 cents per kilobyte, because Sprint set my wireless card up on a voice only plan, even though Sprint PCS doesn't even offer a voice plan for there PCS Vision card's and the c201 doesn't support voice. I'm currently working with ConsumerAffairs.Com and the BBB thanks to SprintPCS-Sucks.Org, to have the fictitious charges removed from my account and the debt removed from my credit report. This is a warning to anyone planning on using Sprint PCS Vision card's, or there new MobiTV over PCS Vision enabled phone's. Also make sure there not charging 2 cents per kilobyte, because it states that it cost's $9.99 per month plus connection charges. If you've had similar problem's with Sprint PCS, visit SprintPCS-Sucks.Org and use all the useful links to file a complaint with multiple organization's. You can also get a free email account, so you can let other people know how bad Sprint PCS really Sucks!

Typical sprint BS

Ive been with Sprint for over 5 years now.. If you check, that's from right when Sprint PCS started.

I want to switch so bad, but they have me in a contract. I might just pay the cancellation fee.

It was great at first. No roaming, no long distance, no contract, low rates, first incoming minute free!!! I loved it!

Now, it's crap.

Their marketing department is at fault. They're grade-A stupid. They come out with Wireless Web a few years ago, 14.4k. Fine, it's cute - simple text sites, and you can hook it up to your laptop -- thats what everyone really wants.. They rave about how in a few years, you'll be able to get 1.5mbps through your phone! Great!

In comes Vision.. Not 1.5mbps, but 144k.. Cool, anyways, right? I sign up right when it comes out.. Buy some clunky-ass phone with a sloooooow web browser that takes longer to load and render pages than the old 14.4k wireless web.. That doesn't matter, anyways.. I bought it to hook up to my laptop..

Remember? Sprint used to advertise hooking it up to your laptop. They had a display in the store, with a phone hooked up clipped to the screen. Unlimited? Right on!

Then, the "connection kits" disappeared, and they added terms saying that phones could NOT be hooked to a laptop. The "unlimited" vision was for $3.00 ringtones and paying $4.99 a MONTH for some crappy pac-manesque Java game I could write in a long evening. Please.

Then, the frills. Appealing to the metrosexual in all of us, they add multiple IM services, "1KTV" (at a subscription cost, of course) and now charge $15 extra a month for Vision.

The IM crap doesn't even work - you need to log into the "minibrowser" to send a message, which entails at least 4 menus after a sign on and long connection, and then you basically have to refresh to see if you have any messages. What crap!

Now, this TV garbage. GIVE ME A DATA NETWORK I CAN USE, AT A DECENT PRICE, TO DO THINGS PEOPLE WANT TO DO WITH A DATA NETWORK -- NOT AWKWARD CRAP THAT TEENAGERS USE TO SEND "LOL HEH U R 2 CUTE " DURING MATH CLASS.

Sprint, I have been with you for more than five years. When my lousy contract runs out, it'll be 6. Very few people have stuck with you that long.

When that contract's up, I'm done with Sprint. For good.

And don't tell me that's all I should want to use it for. I know what I want, and Verizon has it; so does TMobile.

Re: Sprint PCS Vision - What Vision?

the only thing i can tell both of you is... get T-Mobile... i have had it for a few months and although SLOW as dogpoopoo it DOES work, and rather well... the Seirra AirCard 750 not only gives me between 20~40Kbps (got numbers from DSLR speedtests) BUT it also works as a phone! with a headset... since we already had a family plan it only cost me $10 to add it to our plan, and $20 extra for >UNLIMITED data... or if you just want data w/o phone, its $30/mo by itself

it works great in my iPaq 5555 (hardly uses that much battery either) and in my Toshiba laptop...

and when your on the net and somone calls you the "Watcher" tells you you have and incoming call and if you choose to pick it up it suspends your net connection until you finish talking and then resumes it automatically (pisses off downloads etc but it works rather well)

the watcher also has caller id blah blah that t-mobile gives you for free

as you can tell im very happy with t-mobile, when i was working at a retail store i would sell t-mobile, sprint, verison, and AT&t wireless and i would pretty much always recommend people go with t-mobile

Re: Sprint PCS Vision - What Vision?

I had t-mobile for a few days. I could hardly ever get a signal but when I did, it rocked. I thought it was the phone cause I had gotten the free Motorola that had no antenna sticking out of it, and later found bad reviews about it online, but the person at tech support told me it was the service and canceled my service for me. I still think it was the phone, but now I'm stuck with sprint :| T-mobile does have sweeter plans, they have the cheapest wireless web I've seen, while I cant even find the international long distance rates for sprint pcs. I'd say anyone who can get t-mobile, its probably a better deal. Sprint doesn't even offer real SMS, you have to use the web browser, and since I don't have the wireless option on my plan, nor will they let me add it on, they charge me extra for wireless web because I don't have vision.

You are right.. Sprint does suck.

The BBB is the most useless organization ever. They are nothing but a bunch of extortionists with a smile. That's going off topic though.

So anyway, I had the same problem in March, June, August and again this month. I have been misbilled around $4500 this year. I have been a customer since 1998 and have only received 2 correct bills. Most of them have been 3 to 10 wrong, but this year has been the worst.

They have supposedly migrated to a new billing system this month, but I still have billing problems. I am even getting billed for the phone number 999-999-999999. Yes, that is the correct number of 9's.

Sprint is horrible at billing, but their network has been the best so far.

Guess what I am really saying is, you are not alone man.
