Helio Finally Dies
May 2, 2006 - May 25, 2010
by Karl Bode Tuesday 02-Mar-2010 tags: business · alternatives · consumers · wireless
Helio is a Mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) co-founded by Earthlink and SK Telecom in 2006, which over time developed a nasty habit of burning through money (more than $700 million) without a whole lot to show for it. Earthlink started backing away from Helio back in 2007, finally admitting to themselves that the outfit was simply a money drain. In mid 2008, Earthlink sold Helio to Virgin Mobile for $39 million. In 2009, Sprint announced that they'd acquired Virgin Mobile for $483 million.

Virgin Mobile and Sprint today started informing media outlets and customers that they're shuttering the Helio postpaid service for good on May 25th (note: Virgin Mobile prepaid service is not impacted). The 86,000 current Helio users won't be migrated to Sprint automatically, according to Virgin Mobile. They will however be offered a $50 Sprint credit if they sign a two-year contract, according to the company:

Current postpaid customers are being given $50 towards the purchase of a Sprint postpaid handset with a new two-year agreement. This credit is in addition to any applicable rebates that may apply. Postpaid customers moving from Virgin Mobile to Sprint will also receive $150 off of handsets as part of Sprint’s standing new customer offer. Activation fees will also be waived.

Helio came, it bled money all over the upholstery, and then faded out into that dark telecom night. Goodnight, Helio.

Handset charges

Their handset charges were/are crazy. Who would pay $200+ on average for a handset that was just a messaging phone? It wasn't a smart phone at all. And they never really had any new phones.

The cutting edge "south korean" phones that were promised somehow never materialized. Where was my 10 MP camera phone with a microdrive (flash still expensive) in 2006 ?

I am not a Helio customer.. but...

.... There is one thing these companies should NOT be allowed to do...

If Virgin purchased Helios which in turn was purchased by Sprint... Sprint should be required to allow the existing handsets to continue to operate on their network and NOT force the customer into new handsets...

Sprint was the MNVO provider to Helios in the first place.. there is no reason for them to require a new handset. I see this as purchasing liability in all other forms... existing customers handsets should be just another liability..

.. Nice way to grab more revenue and new contracts, there, Sprint! .. hopefully that offsets your acquisition costs. The bad thing about Sprint doing this... it's only going to make all those customers think about "which carrier" they want to start new service with.. to Helios customers, Sprint now becomes just another option.

Re: I am not a Helio customer.. but...

LOL. where have you been? this goes on all the time. VZW will be doing this to Alltel customers in the mergered markets. And every other company does it as well. its to get rid of the "old dead names" to the actual "real" brands. Plus Helio was never marketed like Sprint is.

Sprint was real good to Nextel owners. But it was a "merger of equals" and not an acquisition.

i don't have any issues. but my point? nothing is never going to change, its a fact of business. when a company buys another regardless on how it works if their is equipment involved the new company usually makes you change to THEIR equipment. WHY? they know how it works, they suppor it and they don't have to support something only a had few of people may have. Especially with Helio.

I completely agree. Sprint is on the verge of pissing me off so badly that I will boycott their products forever if they discontinue my Ocean 2 service. It is all a scam to get me to buy a new effing phone. I don't understand why I cannot convert my post paid service to a prepaid plan, or continue using my handset with a new plan. I DO NOT like any other phone! I went to Radio Shack to look at the Sprint phones and though many would claim the Ocean 2 was dated from the time it left the box, I am at a loss to find any phone that can even compare!!! I got my Ocean and Ocean 2 FREE. I have over a year and a half left on my contract, but I am supposed to shell out mega bucks if I am to buy a phone that can even do HALF the stuff I already do on a regular basis. A 50 buck credit gets you Buckiss!! Couldn't Sprint let me keep my Ocean 2 in service on the network it ALREADY uses, and let me buy a new phone when I am ready? No they have to force me to buy something, and not only that force me to recommit to another 2 year contract. KUDOS TO YOU SPRINT, THIS ATTEMPT AT EXTORTION is going to alienate a good part of the customers YOU ALREADY HAVE! I could see you offering to let people switch as a courtesy, but forcing people to abandon our perfectly good functioning phones, is at the very least an environmentally irresponsible slap in the face. I cannot say in polite company what I really think of this, so I will tone it down and sign out with: YOU SUCK SPRINT!

More like ELNK post-Mindspring/post-Sprint merger.

I had a close friend that worked for ELNK when it was still independent and based here in California and it was a good company to work for - and still provided the excellent service it had a reputation for in its early days.

When Sky Dayton and Garry Betty ran ELNK it was a solid company.

You won't have a choice. You either keep your contract by moving over or Sprint will force you.

And you don't want a POS Smart Phone then why get an Apple? Why not get a Google phone?

I thought Helio already had died 1-2 years ago. I didn't know they were still around.

May 25th? You do know it's only March 3rd, right? The article's title indicates a past tense. Did he steal a time machine, jump ahead to May 26th to see the outcome, but forget that he jumped back before posting?

Wait...

86,000 customers? Really? Still? With all the choices that exist these days, their response was to stick with a severely outdated phone from a non-existent company tied to disinterested partners? Really? Really?

Perhaps some of them will upgrade to a nice shiny new RAZR.
