A big shakeout is overdue in VOIP

Way too many little players in this market segment. The shakeout is long overdue. Within a year or two only the major players will have the money and customer base required to be viable in this market. And with the government stepping in and mandating things like 911 service standards, the small guys won't be able to hold on any longer. Big cable companies will be the winners here for the foreseeable future because the DSL providers(mostly old Bell companies) don't want VOIP leaching away their profits from plain old telephone(POTS) service.

Its still quite possible that some form of regulation could pull the plug on this voip madness at any time.. just as unpredictable as that stock market bubble back in the 1990's!

And as we all know what happened to technology spending for 5-10 years afterwards.....! See how long it took Verizon to get off its company hungry consolidation slump to deliver fiber!

Much to say about nothing

This small company is hardly indicative of what will happen to the industry in general. The technology of VOIP is such there will always be many players both large and small. No one person can control this market. It is as accessible and commodity level as email service, controlled by no one and run by almost anyone. Voice communications is an industry heading towards $0 in revenue. E911 will go away in its current form eventually since the operations model does suit itself to portable and moving talk endpoints.

Just normal tech evolution in progress.....

Sunrocket?

I know Sunrocket is one of those smaller compaines. I really hope they don't go out of buisiness because I just signed up with them a month ago & sent them $200.00 & ported my POTS line. So far Sunrocket has been great with very "good" call quality & it has not gone done once.

Not even close to the same deal. Livevoip was a teenager with 2 servers in a garage. Read the listing of his assets through the bankruptcy filing here:

Dude that would really suck! Imagine if you had your number ported to them? What a fn nightmare it could be to get it over to someone else in a hurry. Not to mention the money you would loose if you were using it for your business. Well, it was bound to happen with all the fly-by-nights out on the net. No offense to anyone but if you went with them it was mostly you own fault by being so naive!

1) Unprofessional website
2) Ridiculous verb usage ("world headquarters" and "government sales" -- just plain STUPID)
3) Rates too low to make a profit (1.3 cents for toll-free, are you kidding me?)
4) Been shut off before by previous providers
5) Obvious lemonade stand business

"Moral" if it sounds to good to be true it probably is

Welllll...Maybe it's just me, but I never have understood just WHY I should bother with VOIP, especially when it costs the same-if not more-as plain old POTS service. And, once the government starts with their usual taxes and fees.

I suppose some people will go for any ripoff, pie in the sky techie stuff, as long as it is "bleeding edge".

It actually costs less than a pots line. I was paying the bell 75$ for a basic line with no LD and Caller ID, along with DSL Lite (256K/128K) a month. Plus my per minute fees for long distance

Now I'm paying $70 a month for a fully featured phone...unlimited long distance, and 6MB/768K internet.

With the promotion I'm on I'm paying 20$ for the next 6 months for internet, My 1st month is free for internet, and I get a free month of phone service for each person I refer...which is 3 so far.

So long run - Bellsouth = 900 year.
Comcast/Lingo = 600 year (including promotion and referrals)

$300 in savings...or $25 a month.

It may not seem like a big savings, but then look at the feature set. Unlimited long distance...every feature available...and the best internet speed available...at a lower cost than what I was paying the Bell.
