Hints Of 7.2 Mbps AT&T 3G In Kansas City
As users wait for promised speed bump

Back in May, AT&T announced plans to upgrade their wireless network to 7.2 Mbps HSPA, delivering faster 7.2 Mbps downstream speeds. Employees had told us the faster speeds had been in several test markets for much of the year, and AT&T in September claimed the faster speeds would arrive in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami before the end of the year. While those markets haven't launched yet -- with just a few weeks left in the year -- a user in Kansas City sends us this screenshot showing speeds over 5 Mbps with an iPhone 3GS. AT&T says they'd like to launch 7.2 HSPA in 25 of AT&T's 30 largest markets by the end of 2010, and across 90 percent of its 3G network footprint by the end of 2011.

More speed for less use!

Remember people, don't use AT&T's network TOO much or else they will 'educate' you on how to use their system less

Re: More speed for less use!

Id just take regular 3G. Not here yet. Suppose to be here early 2010.

AT&t better since it's network goes down more often than a Thai hooker.

I'll stick to TMO

TMobile announced HSPA+ 21Mbps by the middle of 2010. While TMO is a much smaller footprint, they are releasing 7.2Mbps like crazy and should be mostly done by year end 2009.

I really do not see the benefits of AT&T unless you live in a rural area.

Re: I'll stick to TMO

Correction: there's no benefit to AT&T unless you live an area that doesn't have T-Mobile 3G yet. My town of a little over 10,000 got AT&T a couple of months ago for 3G, but T-Mobile is about 40 miles away for 3G, about the same distance as Clear. T-Mobile also doesn't have HSPA+ live in most places yet. Thena gain, AT&T doesn't have 7.2 HSPA live pretty much anywhere yet.

That said, I'll take AT&T HSPA, which runs between 1.2 and 2.2 Mbps down, and between 800 and 1200 kbps up, over Sprint and Verizon here, all else (including caps) equal. I'm fortunate NOT to be in a congested market. Otherwise my life would be miserable, since I'm too far for cable and DSL and the AT&T card gives me a halfway decent connection that the local WISP has of late been unable to provide.

Will AT&T send in the Army?

Isn't El-Kansas supposed to be part of the armed insurrection in 2012? I'm not saying it's going to happen, I'm saying it's going to happen, maybe. Will AT&T buy off the remaining congress to send in the Army to try and repress them? What if the werewolves in congress won't do what the AT&T lobbyist tell them to do? What's the point of giving better technology to a state that is going to be part of New New Mexico in 2 years?

Now how about the North East!

It's fine and dandy that the middle of nowhere gets higher speeds.

how about those of us who live in civilization? When is the NYC Tri-state area going to get this.

I mean really, give the higher speeds to those who will use it the least is pointless. Give it to us who will certainly use and we'll show you a thing or 2.

Anyway... reminder 3pm EST. Use your 3G as much as you can.

KC is the 5th largest telcom center in the US and has ranked high with broadband penetration. KC (tech savvy wise) is to the midwest what Austin is to SW and Charlotte is to SE.

ATT probably rolls out where they have the heavy usage and the least resistant path of logistics to rollout.

iPhone is artifically limited on upstream. In all likelihood an aircard in the same situation would get about 1 Mbps up.

It must be really nice actually getting you use your phone. My speed here at work is currently 0 kbs. I couldn't even run a speed test.

The last one I ran a few days ago was 10 kbs down, 2 kbs up, 22,000 ms latency.

It's amazing to me that some people get 5 Mbps for $30 per month, and others get almost nothing for $30 per month.

AT&T is absolutely pathetic on a national scale.

...except for the latency. Your DSL is 24ms, your iPhone is 294ms. Not bad but not what I'd call great for gaming.

The ping has never been right on the speedtest app. Ping times on AT&T's network is around 100-150ms, which you can game on just fine. Do it all the time on my EV-DO card.

How about getting everyone off of EDGE first?

I understand the desire to roll out faster speeds, especially if the technology is already there.

But why the heck can't they finish rolling out 3G to the rest of us who don't have it? The AT&T map shows I live in 3G coverage area, yet I have to drive 10 miles west before I'll pick up 3G. UGH. For my $30/mo, I feel a bit...ripped off.

I am getting more confused

Is this the same ATT that was subject to chokehold today for not investing in its networks?

Something is going on in Miami

Last month I was lucky if I got 2Mbps. Now I'm getting closer to 4Mbps? The closest server is in Hammond, LA so that might play into it not being 5 Mbps. Not sure though. I'll keep testing. Anybody else in Miami seeing faster speeds?
