Hitachi Global Storage Technologies plans to announce this week a massive hard drive designed to store corporate data or record about 400 hours of video for consumers.

The new drive has a capacity of 400GB, spins at 7,200 revolutions per minute, and uses ATA (Advanced Technology Attachment) interface technology, according to a source close to Hitachi. The drive can come with either the parallel ATA interface long used in desktop computers or the newer Serial ATA interface. Dubbed the Deskstar 7K400, the drive is being tested by manufacturers and could be in digital video recorder products available to consumers later this year, the source said.

1 tb

Tb? OMG LOL

I doubt I'll have a need for that space in the next five years, but I reckon it will lower prices on the smaller drives. Good

Re: 1 tb

I'd LOVE to have a 1 tb drive. That way when it crashes, I could REALLY screw myself over...*grin*

Guess what, I just bought a 250G drive a couple of months ago, and I'm starting to run out of space. I'm doing some VHS -> DVD conversion and DVD remastering, and they're both disk space hogs.

Deathstar reincarnated

All I know is that Hitachi bought the IBM hard drive division and I have IBM Deskstars fail on me several times. So, I seriously don't think it will have a good rep when it comes out.

I also like this "designed to store corporate data"
Corporations usually use things like EMC to store their corporate data and it's a helluva lot faster than the common ATA or SATA interfaces.

Re: Deathstar reincarnated

With larger capacities it is critical to make hard drives more reliable.. I wonder how that will go.
