Some of the coolest gadgets were not designed to to anything more than please the person building it. Some stayed that way, others became very popular or morphed into something the public uses.
Maybe, in the future, this will have a more practical use. Maybe it will inspire someone to improve it. This is what drives innovation. | |

| Wardriving paranoia, now a free AP in backpack? Does anybody else find it slightly humorous that after the open AP wardriving paranoia that's been going around for the last couple days that now BBR has a story on sharing your EVDO mobile connection via WiFi?
I can't wait to see the responses/debate this creates.
Forget that, use the worldwide wifi with the SSID of "linksys".

Played around with similiar over 2 years ago.....
Using a Linksys Access Point, Setup in a computer carry case the following:
Inspiron 7000 Laptop with PCMCIA Ethernet Card
Sanyo 8100 Phone with Sprint PCS Vision service
Linksys WAP
Small Motercycle Battery.
What I did was plug the Sanyo 8100 Cell phone into the Inspiron 7000 Laptop (that had a battery in both media bay's for about 6 hrs of battery life total) Via USB.
Used the laptop do "dial in" to sprint for aprox 128kbps cellular connection.
Configured laptop to bridge the connection to the ethernet card and act as a DHCP server.
Pluged the WAP into the laptop's Ethernet Card to re-broadcast the signal.
Vala, Done. Wireless Internet wherever I wish using Spring Vision service.
Could either plug it in to car 12v outlet, or i could use a 15 watt solar panel that I like to tinker with to extend the WAP run time. Laptop lasted long enough with 2 batteries.
The Inspiron 7000 was my fav dell modle ^_^
Only real difference is those people use EVDO, so big woop, with my old setup, all that would be needed to change is to pop in a EVDO card into my other PCMCIA slot and.... You get the Idea.

I did the same thing while using the neighbors wireless connection. Plugged in my USB adapter, then used internet connection sharing to act as DHCP server. I ran it through a router, and plugged in my Vonage phone. I had free internet for 3 mos until they moved. It was a great setup. I am sure it would have worked better through a distro of Linux, but it suited my needs. | |

I'll say, This pathetic TOS looks likes It's aimed at a business user, Not at a casual user who would play games online in addition to web browsing or email, If there is a camera built in It seems their TOS prohibits that too, Oh boy terrorists will like that, Now If someone takes their picture and mentions It Verizon can yank their service as punishment for doing their lawful duty to report such cretins. Who ought to hang from the neck til dead(terrorists that is).

| TOS is bull!! :-) Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about legal jargon. I've asked this question before and there are two important answers.
1. Verizon has no right to limit what you do with the bandwidth they are providing you. They might as well tell you that you can't use the cards together with a VOIP service like Vonage. Unless they can do something 'within' their system to limit everyone's capabilities thier claim will hold no water.
2. They'd be foolish to try and prosecute anyone for sharing a connection. The day after they enforce ANY limitation on you, every competitor will offer what you want as their own SERVICE. T-Mobile already has the starbucks contract, why not go for a wifi backpack contract.
I keep hearing that cellular is the RAGE and that we are the wifi freaks. When will the big guns wake up and realize they are nothing but a bridge technology.
