Apparently people don't want to talk on the phone in airplanes
04:52PM Wednesday Apr 16 2008 by KathrynV
tags: business · wireless · alternatives · legislation
It’s one step-forward, one-step back when it comes to wireless communication on U.S. airplanes. In-flight broadband is taking off but there has been strong opposition to allowing VoIP services which would bring voice conversations to your seatback table. Now a new bill has been proposed in the House which would turn talk down further by banning all cell phone use on flights. The representatives proposing the bill (called the HANG UP act) say that the current ban in place could easily be lifted as a result of the new in-flight Internet technology and they want to make sure that doesn’t happen. Their belief is that flight passengers don’t want to have to listen to others take calls on the plane. Meanwhile, Europe is moving forward with letting passengers talk on their airlines so if you want to get chatty in air then international travel might be an option to consider.

The last thing I need is some moron talking at the top of his voice about how nice his vacation was for two hours straight while sitting next to me.

I hate cell phones and don't own one.

Re: This can be used by terrorists........

you hate cell phones... do we really need laws to enforce manners? it's like turn signals there are laws that say we have to use them and inconsiderate people still don't use them... so I flip them off... so if someone is talking too loud next to you either on the phone or to the person next to them... tell them to shut the hell up Please! besides why do we see cell phone use as any different than two people talking next to us, is it some how different cause you can't hear the other side of the conversation? if every would just show a little consideration we would not have these problems.

What can? If there is a law against using a cell phone on a plane, and a cell phone would help them, a terrorist is going to use it anyways. Or if you're on a plane getting hijacked, you're going to use your cell-phone to tell someone anyways, who cares about the law in that situation.

When cell phones are outlawed, only outlaws will have cell phones.

I think phone conversations banned/not banned would be better for the airlines to decide. Depending on how people feel, it could be a competitive advantage. Airline A could lift all restrictions, they'd probably get more business passengers and first time flyers. Airline B could ban the talking and they'd get the people who like to sleep or not be bothered.

Re: This can be used by terrorists........

axus, you have a very good point, but of course I would have thought that other airlines would try to compete as soon as one airline lifts the ban and then quickly all airlines wqill have lift the ban.

I agree that it should be up to each airline. Just like I think laws banning smoking in privately owned bars is out of line. Leave those decisions up to the business owners.

On the other hand I'd just be happy if the FCC would publicly own up to the fact that there is no technological reason for the ban. Yes I don't want to hear some jack*ss trying to sound important, but his phone is not going to bring the plane down, and trying to convince me it is only makes them look like idiots.

Oh come on. You can have your phone, just no yakking it up while in flight. And yes, if there's an emergency (Like a terrorist takeover) you CAN use your phone.

"Oh maybe I should report this hi-jacking... oh wait the no cell phone sign is still lit. Nevermind...." LOL

A terrorist is just that. S/He doesn't need cellphones or a lack thereof to hijack a flight.

As for the concerns of interference with nav and/or comms equipment that staff uses to ensure the safety and pilot the plane. I'm still skeptical on that one.

I saw the episode of MythBusters where they concluded that it was just another way for the airlines to get into your pocket while up in the air and cornered. But there was realtime interference caused directly to the (OLDER) nav equipment by a pre-pay cellphone that was used during the mock cockpit test. If that result is any indication of what would happen when a majority of jumbo jet users have their cell phones on and using most of them at the same time, well that wasn't tested (at least not publicly). Kinda started a Sub-Thread here for speculative purposes, lol.

In-flight VOIP?

Wouldn't latency be a major issue with using VOIP on an airplane? Or is there some way around that now?

Gah...count me in too. Are airlines REALLY trying to make flying into the 21st century equivalent of Torquemada?

After a 4 hour trip next to a gaggle of teen-age girls yakking on their cell phones, a little waterboarding in Guantanamo would seem positively refreshing. Heck, on a trans-Pacific flight, I'd probably be ready to blow up the plane myself.

So we need the government to step in and dictate this? Shouldn't it be up to the airline as to what customer services they allow and don't allow on their planes?

I mean, talking isn't exactly a health concern. Someone yaking on the phone next to you isn't causing you bodily harm. If you don't like it, then you should fly an airline that *chooses* not to allow patrons to talk in-flight.

If you have the money, as well as the funds to make amends for any fees incurred in porting data from phones, and other financial repercussions for disconnecting the phone, go for it. Myself, I'd just let them yak while I pass out for the duration of the flight.

Laws, laws, laws...

How about they just leave the decision to the marketplace? If people want to talk on the phone in flight, they'll board an airline/flight which allows it. If they don't- they'll board a flight or airline which doesn't.

While I do most certainly not want to hear other passengers chat up on their phone the entire flight, I do want to be able to work (or pleasure) from a plane, so I think a total ban is a very bad idea. Just let the marketplace decide.

As a VoIP provider though, I think the possibility of people making cheap VoIP calls while 30,000 ft up in the air is plain exciting!

Of course, when it comes down to it you'll just sit and sneer at the person trying to make them feel uncomfortable, while deep inside trying to think of creative ways to end their life. I see no actual phone cramming in your future.

Another Excuse..

I remember when MythBusters did an episode on Cell Phones and Airplanes. It turns out that the phones now-a-days (digital) DO NOT interfere with the planes electronics. It would take an enormous amount of power to actually make the guidance system go nuts.

This is just another excuse they coughed up to stop people from talking on airplanes.. and if you do want to.. you have to use their phones and their rates.

Just another pile of BS.

I think that if they had a little section in the back of the plane (or right by the wings) that would create a better enviroment for people to use there cell phones. Or maybe if they just only alowed text messaging or something like that.

Why stop there?

Man, oh man! So, let me get this right... the government is attempting to pass a Bill, making cell phone usage on planes illegal, because they feel people don't want to be BOTHERED by other people talking on them?

Hell, why stop there!? People don't want to look at ugly people to... ban them from going in public! Most of us HATE idiots, keep them inside (oh wait, that means the politicians could never come out and play)!

Point is, most of us HATE a lot of things; however, that gives no reason for big Sam to step in and throw down a hammer! These old farts in suits at the Big House are getting a bit ridiculous!

As I've stated in a post JUST on this topic, ONLY a couple weeks ago... peace and quiet in ANY public atmosphere is not a right in this country (and YES, a commercial plane would qualify as a public place)! 99.9% of the time also, if you were being annoyed by somebody... simply bringing it to their attention and asking them to bring it down would suffice! If not, bring their actions to the appropriate authorities (whether it be the stewardess, police, etc.).

I'm completely worried where this country is heading!

Cell Phones on Planes No Thanks

My vote is absolutely no cell or VOIP phones on planes. I would not want to be on a transatlantic flight trying to sleep.

Why do some people think that their pointless conversations are so important that they need to be able to communicate 24 hours a day.

I have begun to hate cell phones with a passion. Every other car doing 30 in the left lane when the speed limit is 50 has someone yacking on a cell phone while they drive.

You go out to get a quick meal in a diner and the person at the next table is talking about his or her hemorrhoids.

I was actually at a funeral and the priest got a call on his cell phone. His excuse was he did not know how to turn it off.

I was in the tire shop and a girl got a cell phone call from a friend. She just sat there in the waiting room with 3 or 4 people in it and told her friend that she just got back from the Bahamas. She went on to tell the friend that she got pregnant, told both boyfriends that the baby was theirs and collected money from both to get an abortion. With the extra money she was able to get the abortion and have a vacation.

Viva la Europeans

In general, Europeans are not as hung up (pardon the pun) as Americans on trying to make a buck 24x7, so perhaps they will use phones in flight in moderation.

I agree that in the US, I am very much in favor of a total ban on phones (of any type) on planes, which are seemingly the very last place (even the campgrounds are being corrupted) of solitude from mostly unnecessary yakking.

LOL. I can't remember the last time I heard an oblivious yakker interrupting everyone's dinner actually discussing business. More commonly it's what Hunter is wearing to his pee-wee soccer game next week or some other similarly inane and pointless conversation.

Did you just use "congress" and "sense" in the same sentence?

But seriously, I've never understood the animosity towards cell phones, in places where it is perfectly acceptable to talk to another person who is physically present. In a movie theater? Of course not, because it's not acceptable to talk there at all. Too many idiots do anyway, which is one of many reasons I don't like going to the movies anymore, but that's another rant.

Talking on the phone loudly? That's not OK either, just as having a loud conversation with someone else who is standing on front of you is not OK.

But no one gets upset if someone has a conversation, at reasonable volume, with someone else in a supermarket, restaurant, on a plane, etc. So why is that OK, but having that same conversation on a cell phone is not?

I've been seeing a slow increase in restaurants that are either refusing to allow patrons to bring children with them or asking patrons with particularly badly behaving children to leave.

There have also been cases where particularly smelly passengers have been asked to de-board the plane prior to takeoff.

Whether it's legislated is another question but people who distract other customers do get reprimanded by the staff and I'd hope the same would apply to overly annoying cell phone users.
