How Naked is Verizon Getting? Debate over how much skin is showing.... Wednesday Apr 20 2005 14:28 EDT Since Marketwatch first announced Verizon would be allowing customers in the Northeast to ditch their local service (providing "naked" DSL), there's been lots of pontification over just how naked Verizon would be getting. Internet News has the story right: Verizon DSL customers in the Northeast (ex-NYNEX, Bell Atlantic territories) should be able to ditch Verizon phone service. New customers, and customers in other Verizon territories, aren't being given the option - yet. While this is a small footprint, the news is still a big deal: If you recall, many DSL customers who have tried to switch local providers have suddenly found their DSL line cancelled. Most were told unbundling the two was either illegal or technically impossible. While not fully nude, this at least is a step in the right direction. Verizon insiders we've spoken to confirm the move, but many support reps seem unaware this is an option yet. So far, we've not seen anyone successfully make this switch; if you have, post in the comment-section below. |

Call Center does not have a clueThe call center does not have a clue yet. No matter who you talk to the representitive says its impossible. Mentioned articles, the clueless reps still say impossible Called three times to try and get some info..was passed around like a hot potatoe from one rep to another rep, from billing, to tech support, to god knows where in India..lol. I had some spare time to fill.

Re: Call Center does not have a clueI just talked to a FOIS and a DSL guy at Verizon and both confirmed the move. I asked if I could get phone service for one month with DSL then ditch the phone. They say it could be possible but no policy was in place to determine how long I would have to keep the phone line in order to get nekkid. I really want to get away from Comcast (especially with their crap with RIAA recently), but they are the cheapest and fastest service that doesn't require a phone line right now. My other options are Speakeasy and Covad, and both are insanely priced for a dramatic cut in speed... sigh... Not like Comcast still won't get my money whenever I go to Flyers/Phantoms/Wings games...

We will always get screwedThey will win with this somehow and my wallet will be lighter in the the end. I will either run over minutes with my cell phone or they will jack up the price of the DSL service. I believe we will be screwed somehow someway

Not Again! I think the BBR boys ought to stop subscribing to verizons propaganda news letters. When the facts are in,Verizons a third rate ISP with abysmal dsl deployment. Also, with FIOS forty years down the road,It's time to stop giving credence to this "Chicken Shit" company.

All of you legal experts need to camp out on the doorstep of the telcos and force their hand. There are small ISPs and CLECs around the country who have been providing DSL and phone service to customers provisioned on the Bell companies copper loops to the premisis. It is technically possible. Don't let them fool you.

No transfer caps like your "chicken shit" ISP who caps people who upload or download on overloaded nodes. I get 10 day retention on most usenet binary groups, and no transfer caps. Comcast gives what, two gigs? I do that in a day off of usenet, which I couldn't do on your "chicken shit" ISP. Not to mention the DNS issues: and did I mention that you pay more than I do?

Fine, but do you also but VZ's hardline voice service? And where are you? That's what this thread is concerned with. For nearly TWO YEARS there have been so many f`ing false alarms on this topic stretching back that VZ's press releases and the legions of reporters who rehash them have lost all credibility with me. I'll initiate a new round of inquiries to the now long list of VZ contacts I have amassed (NH State regulatory office, NE PR dept, NE regional planning office, the local engineering crew (very friendly)). Problem for me with this article is it sez they'll currently only unbundle for existing customers. Wonder if my 16 month old unbundling 1-man boycott movement qualifies me in their eyes, seeing as I was a VZ customer for years prior. Hmmm, thought not. I 'spect few people loathe forced bundle marketing as much as I do. No qualms here about bundle discounts, but forced service? grrrr [shakes with anger] just rubs me all wrong. The monumentally stupid thing is if, under present rules, I buy & don't use the voice service (just to get the DSL) I have to pay more to have my unused number NOT go into the local phone registry. Morons!!!! /rant sorry folks. i hate it when others vent all over a news thread, but i'm posting this pile o' poop anyway just to feel vindicated.

Naked or not?I called VZ and was told that it's not possible. I wanted to get VoiceWing but rep told me that I will face same taxes as local service, so I said no thank you. And so far, can't get rid of the local. It's eating $50 dollar whole in my wallet. I would rather be paying $40 for unlimited international VoIP.

Re: Naked or not?Like I said in the past: wait until the company makes the official announcement. By then, the reps will have the processes in place. A news brief is not an official announcement. This happens all the time with any company leaking out or volunteering information of impending service. (fiber, DSL, VoIP, Cable ala carte, BOP, wireless etc..) Amazing

First time, I was disconnected from a conference call between verizon and verizon online, second time, I was told there is no such thing, third time, I was told only if I port my number to VoIP and I said fine, that I work for Vonage and would like to start the procedure, and then I was told that it's not available yet, and the last time, I was told there is no such thing. Oh well, I guess it will happen eventually. Digi

Naked in PhillyI spoke with a Rep yesterday and he told me that chances are PA customers would never see naked DSL. But, he said we may see naked FIOS. He claimed it was due to regulatory issues, but that's a whole other conversation. When inquiring about the ability to ditch the phone, get naked, and get VoiceWing, he said their intention is not to stick with VoIP for very long. Their focus is on sending everything over fiber, voice, video, internet, etc. So it was an encouraging conversation, but reality soon set back in after I hung up. Meanwhile, living in Philly, I'm surrounded by FIOS communities and have yet to get my own connection. Aren't cities supposed to get the cool technology first?

I had Speakeasy DSL (1.5/256) and a Verizon POTS line that went unused until SE introduced OneLink (Naked DSL). I had my SE DSL line installed (6.0/768) and later called Verizon to cancel the POTS line.
The CSR was totally confused as I explained to her the concept of naked DSL. She kept saying, "I don't think this is going to work.". She gave me her direct number should my now-naked DSL line go out, she could quickly call the CO and get the connection fixed. 8 months later and not a day of loss, I'm a happy customer.
Oh, I live in Conshohocken, PA. Should be interesting to see the price breakdown for Verizon.

Re: Naked in PhillyJust talked to some of my friends that work for Verizon here they are about to test naked DSL on employees here by having employees sign up to volunteer for the beta they will be notified if they qualify and will test the entire process via place order and and test the billing system and order provisioning for both residential and business customers with DSL for deployment later in the year. They will be installing a second dry line into employees home. Some will get the 7.1 / 768 with both static and non static according to what they told me the test to start late in May 2005.

Verizon needs to see the light of reason on this: NO ONE IN THE RIGHT MIND will pay those taxes and fees just to have a telephone line over FIBER, with all this cheap voip going around... they have gotta get with the times. Really, there isn't a hill of beans between cablemodem delivered VOIP and fiber delivered telephone service, they are both digital packets with QOS prioritization over typical broadband albiet fiber has different proprietary spectrums of light which usually guarantee QOS instead of coax based cmts timing solutions (without getting too technical), its a very similar product without an absolute guarantee that if the pwoer goes out that you will be assured of 'dialtone'... My fantasy: a 24 hour battery backup system for the equipment that supplies dialtone (CHEAP)

Naked w/ FIOSI called Verzion on 4/20/05 3:00PM EST and rep checked w/ supervisior and can get naked FIOS as a new Verizon customer. I signed up for 15/2 service right away. $40/month 5/2 $50 15/2. Maybe they made a mistake, but I mentioned there was a press release on Verzion site stating phone service was not needed. I made a call on 4/19/05 and another rep told me must have telco service.

We'd have to wait longer.Ok, just got off the phone with Verizon.
Explained to her that we do currently have line but subscribe to a different company. She said she knows what I'm talking about, but she can't place such an order. She said they haven't had any training on such orders so it's likely *atleast* a couple of months away.
I'll just call up AT&T or MCI and get their DSL, they have no problem giving me DSL without being a phone subscriber. (I think!)
