p2p tracking tactics revealed in leaked emails

Back in July it was discovered that Media Defender had set up a dummy website to trap p2p users who were downloading what they thought was pirated content. Media Defender has said in the past that they aren’t trying to stop pirating so much as they’re trying to hinder distribution long enough to let the original material make a profit. But a huge BitTorrent leak may shed some new light on the company’s actual intentions and their means of obtaining them. Approximately 700mb of Media Defender’s recent internal emails have been leaked onto the Internet and obtained by a group called Media-Defender Defenders. These emails discuss the company’s methods of tracking and disrupting p2p users and reveal how they worked to hide their association with the dummy website.

not exactly harder to follow, it's harder to find.

Big time, I've looked at the 700MB file, it imports right into Outlook Express. It contains SSN#, Bank Account Numbers, Address, Phone Numbers. So much private info, these poor people that work for the company are going to be harassed for the rest of their lives now. Anyone now can buy stuff in their name, from their checking account (it had full numbers, routing and bank account number). So much info in here, I feel sorry for those caught up in it that just needed a job to pay the bills.

Basically, their lives were ruined because of this.

I don't feel a bit sorry for them. Karma is a b -- they knew exactly what they were doing, and chose that job. These aren't drones working for minimum wage at Wal-Mart to put food on the table--they had other options.

Are you sure about that? There are far too many 'causes' in the world to consider them all. If one of those 'causes' is offended by your employer does that make your personal life fair game? People from my company have been kidnapped and murdered on similar justifications. (check the domain)

I know this may just be wishful thinking, but I really hope that anyone with that file does the ethical thing by deleting the file.

Re: MediaDefender=Pwn3d

People who choose jobs with the MediaDefenders, Haliburtons, and Blackwaters of the world should realize it is only common sense that they are going to be vilified by large swaths of people for the association they chose. Naturally, I don't condone criminal action that results in disruption of the MediaDefender principals' lives, but I can't find it in my heart to feel any sympathy for them, either.

Funny

Stick to face to face meetings retards. Email leaves a trail and so does paper. At least when it comes to paper, documents can be burned. When it comes to email, you never know who might be intercepting or leaking them. However, the best course of action is face to face. As long as the person isn't wired to record, you are safe. If you are paranoid about that, setup disrupters (IE jammers) for cell and transmitting devices in the room you are in and have background noise in case someone is trying to tape it using the old fashion way.

I've read some of the emails..

And they appear to show that this company is run by lying sacks of s**t!

Remember the web site myvii.com that was an entrapment site set up by them-and they claimed was a "development project that got leaked" ? WELL...these emails show that they DESIGNED it to entrap people! There's also evidence that they put their own trackers up with new albums just so they could claim that lots of people were downloading them. In other words, build up their numbers by entrapment.

This company is totally dishonest- and it shows how dishonest the MAFFIA is by dealing with them.

MediaDefender Exec is cause of leak .

One of MediaDefender's executives was forwarding the company email to his Gmail account with a insecure password .

So is it really that easy to brute-force a gmail account? Pretty scary.

Never underestimate the ability of a Exec to screw up. Executive hair (if your a Dilbert fan then you know what I'm talking about) is not and never has been an indication of intelligence in fact the opposite seems more likely.

Wow

6,621 emails. I'm looking through some of them. It's kinda funny to just see these people talking with each other, sometimes nonsense stuff.

"I’ve already shutdown the miivi services on the server, except the database, and I’ve redirected all *.miivi.com sites to another ip address, not ours.

Steve, please redirect miivi.com to point to an ip that's not one of ours (random ip or whatever).

Dylan, if there's nothing critical running on the miivi server, please shut the computer down. If there is something critical on there, please let us know ASAP.

I have not turned off the server itself, I do not know what other database funcitons it is serving, however I have turned off the web server and now the website is non-functional. If this server needs to be completely shutdown, please let me know.

K. looking at the registry info more closely, I don't think it's because of the domain transfer. It looks like this was a cached result from March.... the current whois doesn't say "MediaDefender," but the Digg article does refer to MiiVi being owned by Randy Saaf of MediaDefender.

R + O, what needs to happen?! Do you want the server pulled?

Re: Html Format

I only saw one email related to new york. Was the phone transcript from the NY AG? It sounded like they were going to use Media Defender to track down child pornography, which would be a much better use of resources than tracking down mp3 uploaders

Karma

Like someone else said, Karma.

Make the price reasonable, the downloading easy and fast and pirating will largely go away.
