New year brought new capacity issues, claim users...
(old news - 06:33PM Monday Feb 04 2008)
tags: satellite · business · bandwidth · networking · HughesNet Satellite Broadband
Caps and traffic throttling are a major reason why the reviews for satellite broadband provider HughesNet are so painfully mediocre. HughesNet customers who exceed the company's daily, rolling bandwidth caps (aka "the FAP"), which range from 200MB to 1250MB depending on tier) find their connections throttled for 24 hours to speeds easily bested by rural American dial-up -- circa 1995 (users say around 7-14kbps).

Click for full size
Even when not throttled, we're seeing a growing number of customers complaining that the service has slowed substantially since the start of this year. Speeds during peak usage times are particularly unimpressive. In some cases, users paying $80 a month for 1.5Mbps/200kbps connections are seeing their lines deliver 101kbps/6kbps. Complains one user:
I have a new HN7000S and I'm getting such slow speeds (151 Kbps) that it's almost impossible to use the internet in the evening.
Says another:
Internet has become basically unusable the past 3 weeks or so. Amazing that I get to spend $70/mo for something that does NOT work a good part of the day.
The company is currently in pre-commercial testing for their new Spaceway 3 satellite, which should ease congestion as it enters commercial use later this year. We recently tried to conduct an interview with HugheNet surrounding their network capacity and FAP, only to be told they'd only accept written questions. We submitted those questions last fall and have been waiting for a reply ever since.

Many around here use wireless internet, like DTN Speednet.
While it sure ain't DSL or cable, it's certainly better than any satellite internet service.

There is nothing like that in my area. So people like my best friend that lives a mere 3 miles from city limits is stuck with dial-up or satelite. I guess the governemnt wants people like my friend to move out of the "boonies" and move to town since they don't seem to care.

Re: Stick with dialup!

Sprint Mobile is not available every where and Verizon's 5 GIG cap concerns me. I know that they only cut you down to 200Kbs but after 6 years with Hughes and only the last few weeks being horrible, I'm not ready yet to throw the towel in.
I have talked with level 4 support and been told just today that the engineers know what the problem is are working on it. I was told I would get a call on Thursday the 7th to see if I have any improvement.
Time will tell.

Nope not available here. All we have is 1XRTT which is, if you're lucky, double dail-up.

That is odd cuz I see the local Hotels have high speed wireless, which you would think would also be available to residential....

I'd use a library or internet cafe if there was one around. I am rural and need the broadband if I want to stay in touch (which I do). So, yes, I'd sure like to know what the other options might be for those of us in the boonies.

Even dialup is not always an option. Where I live, about 36000 feet from the phone company's central office, a dialup connection runs at about 4800 baud if I'm lucky, and disconnects every 10 minutes or so. Cellular wireless is no-go due to line-of-sight being blocked by nearby hills. So, satellite is truly the only option. They are truly a monopoly, and they know it and behave as one.

The real problem is...

The scary thing about satellite internet is that, because it essentially provides coverage to 100% of the country, it allows the whole ISP industry and its pet trade groups to proudly proclaim that there is 100% broadband coverage everywhere, and therefore no regulation or pressure needs to be brought upon the incumbent providers. They can go on redlining to their heart's content, while the government looks the other way. The actual speed and quality the 100% service matters not at all.

Never worked for us either

Most of our work sites are in remote to semi remote locations. We needed HSI and use Sat HSI for years. Under performed from day 1.

Luckly DSL, WISP's, and Cable are more widely available to us now. But some of our locations still need to use Sat. HSI.

Painfully mediocre describes them to a tee.

Schultz

@verizon.net

Don't forget the latency

Above all else, you have to take the fact that there is considerable latency when using this service. The time it takes for the signal to reach back and forth adds a large amount of latency so browsing the net will seem like dialup anyways.

Of course not. It's for the user who has no other options other than sometimes dial up.While it's horrible at present, believe me,800-1200 Kbs when working right, is tons better than 56K

Do you have a wireless outfit in McCloud? We have one here, WillitsOnline ( »www.willitsonline.com ), and they provide Wireless Broadband in some very isolated areas in Mendocino County (and Mendocino County is already very rural in the first place as you know), like the towns of Laytonville, Covelo and Potter Valley where no other broadband is available. I am lucky in Redwood Valley, we have Comcast (formerly Adelphia) HSI, but we still can't get DSL (the CO isn't even equipped for it), and the WillitsOnline's signal is blocked by trees and hills. WillitsOnline is more expensive than DSL or Cable, but I think they are still a better option than satellite if you need it, and they can even provide service to people who are out of their normal range.

Re: Glad I'm gone

If you can get cell service I would get a EVDO (Sprint or Verizon)or HSDPA (AT&T) card, a router that supports the card and something from Wilson Electronics (»www.wilsonelectronics.com/). That should help you and you should be about the same cost for equipment and around the same cost per month, but faster and more reliable speeds.

If you are too far from cell service, then sat or dial up. Hopefully a wireless company will come along and setup, or move closer to a major city, but thats not always popular...

HughesNet "Scam"

There company is a complete scam. 1. Soon as HughesNet gets you locked into their contract your hosed 2. There always trying to hit you for every penny they can buy selling crap that does nothing to help your connection. 3.You constantly have to be on the phone with billing due to billing errors. 3. Once you have the crap you can't return it due to HughesNet 15mo contract. 4. When service does work your lucky to get anything faster than a 100k.

I know it is my fault for signing up..So learn from my mistake, don't buy into hughesnet, and get stuck with a pile of hardware and a $113.00 per mo service contract for 15mos.

I requested to cancel my contract and of course there is a 300.00 fee for early termination and 400 fee for hardware you don't want. They refuse to take back the equipment even if you agree to pay the 300.00 dollar early termination fee.

Sorry for those out in the boonies and Sat net is only choice. My hat is off to those out there how are happy with HughesNet Service..Count your blessings.
I feel personally that every Month I am getting robbed by these guys and nothing I can do about it.

They already know it is overloaded, but yet they continue to sell it and push it?, WTF?

I think the woman's comment at first is how Hughesnet is the biggest Sat. provider in the world, and her next comment is "How cool is that?"

My answer is about as cool as a large group of fire ants in my underwear.

What really makes me smile is the fact that she says, "Your welcome" at the end of the commercial.

Your welcome alright, for a big screwin', LOL!

Alternatives....

Would ISDN, or horrors....even T1 be an option?

I'm reluctant to recommend T1, but this sounds like a case where $400-$500/mo. for 1.5Mb symmetric sounds very good.

This is a big reason why I'm going to stick to suburbs or medium sized towns.

When I say medium sized towns, I mean communities of 50,000-150,000 people.

I really think I wouldn't mind living in a rural area if it weren't for the broadband issue.

I live in a bedroom community/suburb, and all we have is cable. I know that sounds wonderful to someone who doesn't have that, but it does mean I'm at the mercy of Charter, the cable company. I'm just hoping the company is large enough that they won't bother to single us out, due to administrative cost.

That is a LOT. At least you get the SLA, but still that's a LOT.

Somehow, I doubt that any cost savings I'd experience by living in a rural area would outweigh the expensive broadband.

I wonder if the mortgage payments really would be cheaper enough to make up the difference. So much for the living rurally is cheaper myth.

Hughesnet Slowdown

I must admit that this company has gone to pot in the last 4 months. The speeds are near dial-up during peak hours. On the website they guarantee speeds of 400-500 Kbps during peak hours. Of course they are also advertising broadband Internet which the FCC states are speeds 256 Kbps and above.

Anybody having problems with this company should file a complaint with the BBB or their state's Attorney General.

It is unfair to lock anyone in a contract in which they charge you to break when the company itself cannot even keep their end of the bargain. Executive customer care is who will handle HughesNet's claims, and I advise people to not give into them. They are a control group who is there to handle irritated customers; they will do whatever they can say to hold you over.

If they agree to cancel your contract free of charge or offer any other incentive, be sure to get it in writing. Never just agree with what someone there will tell you over the phone.

It is up to the people who have had problems with this company to complain and keep complaining. I am one of them.

Are you serious Clark?

Let me get this straight. Your mindset is, "I want the live in the "boonies" where I have peace and quiet. Where I don't have to worry about building codes or neighborhood associations. Out where we just got running water and maybe a sewer system in the last decade or two. Where ice and wind storms knock out power lines on a regular basis. But you know what? I think I deserve the latest, greatest, and fastest Internet connectivity. I think the federal government should take care of it for me. Despite the fact that my location is barely up to the infrastructure of the early to mid twentieth century, I demand that someone give me cutting edge ISP services."

Mr Anonymous

@comcast.net

Satellite is NOT broadband.

I find it laughable that it is called 'broadband'.

The true definition of broadband should be a connection that has MINIMUM speeds of 150kbs or greater.

But DirecTV will do anything to convince people to sign up for their sorry-assed service.

No thanks.

Hughes is a sad joke

I finally got fed up with the FAP, slow speeds, lousy tech support and general dissatisfaction with HN and dumped them in favor of Millenicom's wireless broadband. Much better service, nice people who speak English well, low equipment cost, and NO contract.

Anyone who has Sprint coverage (see their website at www.sprint.com for a coverage map) should dump HN and go wireless.

ISDN ... iDSL ... WiMax ?

Back in '97 when DSL was in it's infancy I used ISDN (BRI 2b+d) for about $70/month - included 2 x phone lines and 128kbps ISP. This is not going to work if you can't get a phone line, but could be an option up to around 30,000 ft from the CO and for those CO's not set up for DSL. The phone company might not advertise it but it is still available - I would guess you might pay $80-100 for it.

The other option could be iDSL (DSL over ISDN) which gives you 144kbps and no phone service (except for VOIP). should cost around the same as 256kbps DSL but can run up to 30,000 ft from the CO.

WiMax is appearing in rural areas, we have an ISP (WisperTel) that uses it in the Colorado Rockies. Service quality and speed is better than satellite but it cost around the same. If you have no ISP, see if you can set up a town owned system by partnering with Sprint / AT&T / your local Telco, or do it completely privately. Works VERY well for a small community that can share a long haul internet connection. Distance from the central transmitter can be up to around 15 miles and line of sight is required, so put it on your biggest hill!

Getting out of your HN contract

Want to dump Hughes with no penalty? Here's how:

Call corporate at (301) 428-5500 and ask for the President's office. You'll be transferred to Executive Customer Care. Explain your problems to them, tell them you are totally dissatisfied, and want out of your contract, and stand firm. You could drop little hints like mention 'BBB report' and stuff of that ilk. It will be necessary to have a nice history of slow speed tests using THEIR speed test at Hughes Customer Care, to back up your claim.

They may want to make some last-ditch effort to get your setup working right, and if they do, accept that, because one of two things will happen. Either they'll get it working nicely, or they won't. If they get it to work right (highly improbable) then you're OK; if they don't, it just gives you more ammo in your request to get out of the contract.

I did this exact thing. They weren't able to improve things to any degree, and they cancelled my contract with no penalty AND gave me $400 rebate towards what I had to pay a year ago to upgrade from 4000 to 7000. Stand firm, be reasonable and you should be able to get out of the contract. Just keep telling them it's unacceptable, unworkable, you can get wireless cheaper, blah, blah, even if that's not true, although you will need an alternative if they let you out of the contract.

Re: Getting out of your HN contract

I didn't go that route exactly to get out of my Hughes contract, but yeah, it's possible if you stand firm on things.

I first went through my Attorney General. I got good speeds for a couple months after that, but it went into the toilet again. Then I filed with the BBB. I mentioned the AG complaint in the report and said that Hughes has shown they cannot provide reliable service. Hughes contacted me and let me out of my contract. No penalty, and getting refunded for my equipment.

If you're fed up with Hughes and want out of the contract, you need to go through the proper channels to set your case up for it. You need to show you've done what you can on your end to have the issue resolved and put the ball in HughesNet's court. They know they can't provide what they say they do.

Re: Getting out of your HN contract

Exactly right, dMarks. You have to build your case with a history of cruddy speed tests, show a record of complaints and multiple support tickets with Tech Support, but it can be done peacefully and the Executive Customer Support at the corporate office is where to go with it.

They requested one opportunity to change me to a different bird and gateway, but the technician who came out to repoint the dish was unable to get it to connect, despite top-level support from ECS, so they agreed to let me out of the contract.

As a side comment here, what really surprised and disappointed me was when I asked the ECS guy if he ever read any of the forums to see what his customers were saying about HN, and he replied "I try to stay away from that stuff" which seemed to me a particularly idiotic point of view.

If you were running a business, wouldn't you want to know how your customers felt? Or do they just not give a rat's patooty, thinking they are the only show in town and it's them or nobody for lots of users. That was my situation until Wireless Broadband improved here. Now there was indeed competition and I told the ECS guy about it and what a better deal it was and all he could do was say 'yeah, that sounds pretty good.' If I was him, I'd probably feel like one of the crew on The Titanic.

Contract

Hughes would love for me to say let me out of my contract. In fact I believe they are currently on their 4 or 5 offer to refund everything I've paid to date and let me walk. Problem is there's no where to walk to so until then I keep filing complaints with the Maryland Consumers Affairs Division and Virginia's version. After all they put me through I'll be damned if I walk away while they're still advertising service they can't deliver and getting away with it.

I will say they are pretty stupid over there, they can't figure out if they just give me what they charge me for I'll shut up and go away.

Re: Contract

Have you checked sprint's coverage map to see if you are in range of Wireless Broad Band? go to www.sprint.com and get the coverage map and select DATA for the type coverage you are seeking. WBB is very nice, way better than Hughes, and there are several providers offering it.

I would check with sprint first, because if you are in sprint's coverage area you can get Millenicom instead, which is a way better deal. Sprint also offers a 30 day no questions asked money back guarantee, so you can get their kit and see how well it works, and if it does, return it to sprint and go to Millenicom.

If you qualify, what HN is willing to refund you would more than cover the cost of switching.
