Hype Surrounding The New Apple TV Ramps Up
Though Apple scrapped subscription service due to frightened broadcasters
by Karl Bode Tuesday 24-Aug-2010 tags: Video · alternatives
There's been a pretty steady flood of details surrounding Apple's plan to launch a new broadband video TV service. Most recently, details emerged indicating that they hoped to name the unit "iTV," price it at about $99, and offer TV shows for about 99 cents. Not all of the details are promising, including rumors that the device will top out at 720p. Bloomberg today offers up another confirmation that the service is coming, with a little added detail -- such as the fact that program rentals will last for just 48 hours. Bloomberg confirms the TV rental effort replaces a scrapped plan by Apple leaked last fall to offer a full subscription video service broadcasters wouldn't support for fear of cannibalizing pay TV.

Re: the real question is....

It's Apple, that's enough for me to nix it. Plus, I don't see how they will compete with Netflix if that is indeed who they might be gunning for.

Not Fail

I think you're all wrong. IF they come out with iTV it will be very popular. That's a big IF though.

Re: Not Fail

I'm with you. I think it has all the potential to be a big success, along with GoogleTV whenever it arrives.

An IOS based iTV with Netflix, Hulu+, and other content delivery apps of our choosing will be irresistibly attractive- to both consumers and content providers. And again, the same with an Android based GoogleTV with it's suite of content apps.

Re: Not Fail

Can you say Hello Caps and High Overages. You really think the PayTV people are going to let this take out their lucrative PayTV subs? Since they own the ISP's most people get broadband from, I see them coming down like an anvil on this idea.

They will bend us over to make sure we don't start getting all our TV from third parties.

I didn't say it would fail. It has the fruit on it - people will flock in droves to buy it. But it's not for me.

Re: Not Fail

Sorry, you're right, I shouldn't have included you as one of the "all" ...

And even if I do tend to be an Apple Fanboi, I'm still not sure I'll get one either. Not because of the specs but we just don't watch much TV anyway and, unfortunately, these types of gadgets don't have what we DO watch like local news and PBS and live sports. We just don't watch "shows" which is what these things always seem to have on them. The last show we did watch (albeit on the DVR) was "Live at Lincoln Center: South Pacific" ... what do you suppose the chance that iTV will have that available? ... NIL or less is my guess. Or a Yankee game or the Hartford, CT NBC news team?

I'm sure that if and when it does come out it will be wildly successful. I'm not so sure there will be one behind my TV ...

Hmm...

Would the 99 cent price be the rental price, or a DRMed ownership version? If so, that would beat out current offerings around Amazon/Zune/iTunes of ~$2 a TV show. If not, I'll just stick to Zune's offerings - I already own a player via my XBox(es).

Dunno if that would get enough people off their duff to drop $100 on this device. However, with enough flashy advertising, people will buy anything. I haven't met a tech-savvy advocate yet that has deemed the iPad worth a damn, yet it's a financial success.

Specs not impressive but...

Considering that most satellite/cable systems provide "HD" at 720p, at the end of the day, Apple's cripple iTV would provide equal resolution to what people are getting from cable/satellite.

So while to us, "720p" appears to be insufficient to tickle our fancy, the reality is that it may be sufficient.

One also has to consider downloading of content. 720p is quite manageable. About 400-600meg for 1 hour.

But 1080p requires a lot more and couldn't be streamed to most people.

Still, it would be nicer if the unit had 1080p capability with most shows delivered at 720p.

Wonder how much they'll have to pay to get iTV

You'd figure that name would already be trademarked, and the website registered.

Of course maybe it is... to Apple. Years ago. I dunno.

Nope. »www.itv.com/

Of course Apple will probably just buy them.

Fat chance of that. ITV is an established brand since 1955. Chances are ITV will sue Apple instead.

I dunno about that. I'd think they'd be happy to get a big check from Apple to let them use a trademark that is meaningless in most of the world.

Putting the Carte before the Horse

I think there is room for $.99 movies, and in some cases, $.99 TV Shows in lieu of Cable Company DVR fees.

But it won't replace "TV" unless it has real-time cable channels.
$.99 per channel-month, that would work.

Re: Putting the Carte before the Horse

I agree with you on this one.

What kind of time lapse is there from when a TV show is on-air until its dropped onto Apple's system? Also, are they going to add more than 10-15 networks? (maybe there are more but I only saw this many on their website)

What about inDemand events like UFC, boxing or other live events that you won't be able to get on this system?

I just don't see it being a device that will make people cut the cord any faster than any of the other subscription based services out there...

Can it play local content?

Will it be able to play content from a USB drive or samba share? If not, I'm not interested. I record all my local TV myself on my linux server, and if I can't access that I'm not going to pay $0.99 per episode that's already sitting on my network.

Re: Can it play local content?

I would hope that you would be able to stream it across the network... If not, that's another point against it...

.99 per SHOW? Movies are a bargain, 1/2 hr sitcom is not

If I divide my DirecTv bill by the number of shows we watch, I don't get anything near 99 cents per episode. More like half that, for a mix of 1/2 hr, 1 hr and movies (1.5-2hr).

hmm

I think a lot of you are missing something here.

It will run iOS, and most likely have some kind of new controller to interact with it. It will sell millions and millions of units as people play Angry Birds HD, and many other cheap and easily downloadable games on it.

It's Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo who should be worried...not the cable companies.

99 cent TV rentals is just a small piece of the puzzle.

Cable companies will embrace it by creating their own TV Everywhere apps for it.

I love my Apple TV

I think the current Apple TV is a great device. Yes, it only works with iTunes and Apple needs to let it view web content for it to really be effective.

Not a big fan of a scaled down, $99 box that does streaming only. I do have a feeling also that there are some other interesting features of this new box that I hope will make me have to buy it.

720P is not bad for streaming as most people have a 1 to 3 mb internet access at best so this is a good number that gives you good picture quality and still is bandwith friendly. With ISPs like Comcast having a 250 GB cap on their internet connections, if they offered 1080P streaming, it would gobble that up in no time and people would be really complaining.
