ICANN Lists New Top Level Domain Applicants
Let the Ridiculous Gold Rush Commence!
by Karl Bode Thursday 14-Jun-2012 tags: legal · business · content · ICANN · consumers
Just about a year ago ICANN gave their approval to one of the most significant changes in top level domains in the history of the Internet, allowing the creation of entirely new generic top-level domains (gTLDs). For example allowing coke to create websites with the name Drink.Coke, or banks to use more generic URL endings such as .bank. Many people aren't too thrilled with the idea, failing to see the point beyond the obvious enrichment of registrars and others in the domain business -- not to mention the benefit to spammers and cybersquatters.

Click for full size
There are currently 22 generic top-level domains, including .com, .org and .net, and things are about to get dramatically more complicated. ICANN this week revealed the 1,930 applicants for these new gTLDs, bidding for which started at the bargain basement price of $185,000.

The ICANN list of applicants contains the usual suspects, Google alone submitting applications for 100 different gTLDs via the company's Charleston Road Registry domain name subsidiary. Amazon also had a significant number of applications -- 76 to be precise -- many of them gunning for the same gTLDs as Google (.cloud, .mail, and .app).

ICANN says they company will now review the applications to ensure they don't violate trademarks or threaten the "security and stability" of the Internet by being too similar to existing URLs. Many critics believe the move is simply a move to cash in on companies that are forced into defensively registering gTLDs to keep pace with competitors -- or to prevent critics from setting up websites that could harm product brands.

You'll get to see the result of the effort early next year when the first of these domains are expected to go live.

Apple will just wait around to see who gets .app, then sue them, claiming that they own that word.

Is ICANN series??? How will I ever ever be able to type a web address again. I've come to know .gov, .edu, .com, and .net. Oh boy just great. Let's all give ICANN a around of applause for messing up the internet.

Re: Confused..

And how did you learn about .gov, .edu, .com, and .net originally? I think you're greatly underestimating people's ability to adapt.

More of a issue is going to be millions of forms that expect a properly formatted email address. I know I personally have used a regular expression that doesn't enforce an absolutely valid email address, but a generally expected pattern. One that with the exception of .museum, would cover all the top level domains. And even just checking to make sure the email address ended in edu/net/com/org/us isn't uncommon for US-centric sites.

Actually throw in .org and that's all we need. And make them be used correctly

.gov - strictly government

.edu - strictly education

.com - strictly commercial websites

.org - actual organizations. Like the Red Cross. Not stuff like anal-lovers.org.

.net for everything else. Like people that want to throw up a personal webpage or any other non-commercial website.

.net was originally intended for network operators and related companies. Not a generic catch call for everything that didn't fit into .gov/edu/com/org.

The cat's out of the bag and there is no way to go back to "the way it should be" so it's pointless to even debate what would have been best.

.coN

Surprised nobody wants .con. I'm sure .con is a frequent mistype so .con addresses could potentially be very lucrative ad portals.

Or is .con completely ruled out already?

.con has been reserved for the U.S. Congress.

Plain stupid....

Allowing corporate names and anything else as a TLD is just plain stupid. But, I guess that is what happens when you let in commercialization, money and power.

Oh well, the internet used to be a nice place.

Force companies to use their real names and addresses

Because as it is now, they can apply discreetly, thus, you dont know if they are a rich cybersquatter, a thief, a fraud, or an actual company. Seriously, This domains by proxy crap is just that. Look at all "people" on that list, and tell me that all of them are legit companies. Over half of them are registered by proxies, which should not be allowed, because that enables the cybersquatters and frauds more than anything else. Make them put their real name up, or the company name. That in and of itself would probably discourage 90% of cybersquatters and fraudsters, because their real info(or at least a real email address) would be up there.

Totals

Looks like .home and .inc are the most popular w/ 11 applicants each.

.book, .llc and .shop second w/ 9 each.

Walmart wants .george? Why?

.sucks got 3. I think I know where that's going.

There are two each for .娱乐, .微博, .广东, .网址, .网店 and .网站

Nothing from states though. I figured Florida might make a grab for .fl

Governments can't be part of this. You do realize that if you win you have to actually RUN the TLD. What state wants to do that? How many people are actually going to run up and buy a .fl?

George is the brand name of one of Walmart's clothing lines.

But even with that fact in mind, it's beyond me why they would want a brand name, much less only that particular one, as a tld. The other ones they are after are just generics like .grocery and .walmart.

Maybe it's some test for a project they are going to try out.

walmart makes literally $40 million per DAY in profits. What is a couple hundred thousand to throw at a TLD?

Pure stupid IMHO

Everyone and their great granny is used to .com, .net, etc. This only serves to confuse things and I dont think will ever gain traction.

I tend to agree. Think of the last time you went to a .aero, .travel or .museum address.
