BigBand Networks has created a video-processing platform called the MSP2000 that can be used by IPTV and cable companies to deliver personalized video services to viewers. It will start off primarily being used for dynamic, customized ad insertion and other advanced advertising features but there is hope that this kind of technology could one day lead to pay-TV operators being capable of sending unique video streams to each individual subscriber based on their specific interests and video demands without requiring separate devices like set-top boxes. The MSP2000 gets “200 Gigabits per second of switching capacity per chassis” and is already capable of some advanced personalization features including “customized interactive program guides and fast channel change for switched video”. It is being tested out by a variety of different BigBand customers and is expected to be seen first from IPTV providers.

May be other uses, but ad insertion will be the main use

The hardware/software platform may be capable of many uses. But we all know that ad insertion in to VOD streams and the new centralized DVR capability being looked at by various cable TV companies will be the main use.

The cable companies can insert geographic based and user profile based ads in to video streams delivered to the home.

Re: May be other uses, but ad insertion will be the main use

Comcast Spotlight already overlays local ads on the screen even on National channels.

We all *can* see "tailored" ads on nearly any page of the web(if ya turn off the blocker - heh).

Whee! More Ads!

all cable companies do this.

That is one of their business services. This is the only way many local businesses can advertise on TV.

Check out different Media Service Departments for CableTV providers and see all the channels, TV Guide, Weather Channel, Hallmark, TruTV, etc.

In other words, we'll be bombarded with ads that are only slightly harder to ignore...
