While American telcos are just getting started
(old news - 08:53AM Thursday Nov 23 2006)
tags: Video · stats · world · TVIP
"[W]hile IPTV is just getting off the ground in the United States, European and Asian carriers have already built a substantial base of television customers," notes the Associated Press. "By the end of 2006, the number of IPTV subscribers in Europe is expected to reach 3.3 million, up from less than a million a year earlier."

American telcos have just started significant deployments and the totals reflect that: AT&T has just a few thousand IPTV subscribers, and while Verizon has half-a-million Fios customers, only 118,000 of them have FiosTV. A recent study predicted that phone companies will have less than 1% of TV subscribers by the end of 2006 and only 6% by the end of 2009.

Not surprised

Honestly, I'm not surprised at all. While I am paying 45/month for 5.0/384, many in Asia are paying the same for 100/100, or even greater.

Feel free to leave anytime you'd like. I'm sure there are many other people in many other countries around the world that would gladly trade places with you.

Good luck with them - excellent material for engineering, physics etc.

The reality is that low-educated mass that pours over the border is excellent to fix your plumbing, roads, pick your tomatoes, potatoes, mow your lawn etc and also good to keep the profit sky-high for industrial/agronomic sector's business owners but won't work as a middle class. They won't spend money on million things I do - I consider myself part of the middle-class - so the whole fabric of society will change.
Make no mistake: I welcome them but I want to rectify the crazy distortion in the economy and society that the rich enjoy now for ~2 decades or so and destroys the sustainable society and ecomony.

How about the cheaters and their slaves leave and we rebuild the collapsed society without the parasites?

Yep, because you know you were shot in the head after posting that by some oppressive governmental order, all your property was taken, and your family was jailed.

And of course everyone hates us and have placed a huge embargo around all US territory.

And the smart get rich, the dumb are getting poorer. Its called money management.

Just because there isn't a demand here because people in the US don't care about insanely high speeds as a whole, does not mean we're behind badly. It means the market here is different than in other countries.

These types of conversations amuse me to no end.

Re: Not surprised

Id love to move somewhere else, but this is where I am going to stay, even tho our gov sucks ass. This country isn't for the people, its for the rich. And "the smart get rich" BS. That's like maby 10%? The cheating fucking fagots gets rich and steal from poor people. Lets start counting how many scams and corporations have been known to steal money.

Their is no demand, because people aren't educated and don't know wtf they are missing.

I didn't mean it in a government sense, more like in a broadband sense. The US is a great country where our freedoms and rights are protected. But it wouldn't hurt to see higher broadband speeds, especially for us geeks.

HUH?

Wow, 3.3 million that's a lot! Unfortunately it's only an impressive figure if you're talking about the number of monkeys in your living room. Europe and Asia already have significant penetration of digital TV from sources other than IP. Way over 50% »www.theregister.co.uk/2004/07/23···l_homes/ This ain't news, it's a press release.

Verizon is not IPTV

If you actually read the article it doesn't even mention Verizon. Verizon's FIOS is not 100% IPTV. The only thing IPTV about it is its VOD and its channel guide. Everything else is RF and QAM delivery just like every CATV company in the nation. I know they plan to be all IPTV someday, but the technology wasn't progressing fast enough for them to continue to delay the release.

Re: Verizon is not IPTV

I saw that too. For whatever reason FIOS TV is repeatedly misreported here as IPTV. It's not and won't be for awhile. Verizon is poised to add and expand IPTV offerings but right now they don't even warrant a mention, so the article didn't...

This is funny, first you people demand The Phone Companies bribe every local politician to get a TV franchise, you demand The Phone Companies let M$ pump HDTV through their tubes for free. Then you bitch and moan when The Phone Companies can't build a network. There is no free lunch.

Great idea.I live in the DC area.Without any cheaters and slaves there would be no more Beltway traffic jams.
How many federal prisons do we have anyway?
