In Quest for Cord Cutters, Cablevision Will Sell CBS Streaming

Cablevision clearly hopes that appealing to cord cutters will help set the company apart from its biggest regional competitor, Verizon FiOS. Cablevision was the first cable company to strike a semi-exclusive deal to sell HBO's new HBO Now service, and back in April the company announced a suite of new cordcutter broadband promos that include a free HD OTA antenna.

Now the company has struck a deal with CBS to offer the broadcaster's streaming video service as part of a new carriage arrangement with the company.

According to Cablevision and CBS, Cablevision will become the first cable or satellite provider to distribute CBS All Access, CBS' $6 a month streaming service. Launched last October, CBS All Access provides full streaming access to the network's back catalog and live broadcasts.

"As the first distributor to agree to provide CBS’ new Internet services, Cablevision continues to expand its portfolio of next-generation offerings, connecting customers to the programming they value when and where they want it," Cablevision said in a statement.

The two companies didn't announce pricing for this service. Should Cablevision simply resell CBS All Access for the same $6 a month, this deal likely won't be all that interesting (much like what Hulu has been doing). Should Cablevision actually be able to offer a discount on the service, that could appeal to cord cutters who are picking and choosing their streaming video diet.

CBS Insane

CBS is insane, they are a free OTA channel. Who would pay $6 a month just for their one channel?
