In-Car Wi-Fi Service: Do You Really Need It?Autonet service offered via Chrysler, Cadillac ( old news - 09:18AM Monday Mar 23 2009) tags: business · wireless · alternativesFor a few years, Autonet Mobile has been promoting their in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, which uses a Sprint wireless broadband connection (kind of a 3G EVDO Wi-Fi MVNO 4x4, you dig?) to provide connectivity on the go, though actually getting it was a bit of a challenge. Until recently, the device seemed to be in a perpetual state of "coming soon" when it comes to direct purchase via the product website -- though a new WEP-only version of the unit is now available for around $500 for a number of retail outlets. Autonet service had started to show up via a few scattered car rental agencies at the rock bottom price of $10.95 per day. Though as we were writing this, we noticed that their biggest partner on that front, Avis, has since stopped offering it. Availability does seem to be improving with automakers, with Chrysler offering the service as an option this year -- and Cadillac now offering it in their CTS sport sedan starting this April, according to a company press release. Still, it's not entirely clear that the service is worth it. Something the release unsurprisingly omits is that the $30 per month option comes with a 1GB monthly cap, and you'll need to pay $60 per month for a more industry-standard (AT&T, Verizon and Sprint) monthly cap of 5GB. Depending on your needs and carrier (T-Mobile's cap is 10GB), you might just be better off simply buying a less expensive mobile router like the Cradlepoint PHS300. That's assuming that just a smart phone or tethered laptop isn't enough connectivity for you while driving at 80 MPH. Related:- Verizon: Droid Tethering Will Cost $30 Extra

| Re: You can get this thing, or... I think thats actually the kind of market they are aiming at. Free wifi coverage is almost non existant in most places, so having a wifi hotspot in your vehicle so your kids can stream music/games/video to thier prtable wifi devices could be helpful.
Though with just streaming music, I would probably go over the 1gb cap in a day or two, maybe a week. -- Im Your Boogeyman, Thats What I Am

I saw some idiot reading DVD covers and opening them while driving with his kid (not any older than 6 or 7) in the passenger seat. It would be cool if there were a way to ban douchebagism.

If it was up to me, I'd make this type of behavior as well as hands-on cellphones and laptops while driving count as impaired driving, right up there with alcohol and drugs.
I've lost count of how many times I've seen people run a red light or stop sign who were (you guessed it) using a cell phone.
And the texting-and-driving, now that's just scary.

| Mobel Wi-Fi Wi-Fi in vehicles is inevitable. With all the wireless apps coming out faster than you can count them, it will become more and more the norm just like the home PC. Is it a good thing an bad thing? For responsible drivers and knowing what your driving skill is will play a big part. What will it be used for? Well the sky is the limit. Cheaper ways to track your car, down loadable gps maps on the fly, download new music, download updated EEPROM programs for your vehicles performance, upload vehicle data to your home PC for trouble shooting and service records and so on. Most of this stuff can already be done, but the Wi-Fi will open the door to make it easier. Is it necessary? NO, but nether is CATV, SatTV, home internet or telephones. | |

1 edit | This is just way ahead of its time... When cars become smart enough to drive themselves w/o driver intervention (TRUE CRUISE CONTROL). Be it via smart roads or just super smart GPS devices aided with sonar/radar/ladar. Then cars can have wi-fi and sat-tv.
Until that day arrives this is just several thousand more accidents and fatalities on the road waiting to happen.

| Been around a long time... RV drivers have had this for 3-4 years already. Our office has a command vehicle that carries a pair of cisco routers with multiple 3G cards each. One of the interesting uses is streaming dynamic map data (which is way more data intensive than tiled map data like google uses, but can be updated on the fly unlike google). | |

| WEP only? WEP only? I pray to god their not actually that stupid and the thing supports at least WPA-2. WEP is cracked in like 10mins, you'll just be driving around asking for a hacker to use your wireless, then you get stuck with the obscene over usage charges :/ | |

1 edit | Why have it stuck in the car? When you can use something like the PHS300 router, costing less than half as much ($179.00). see at '»www.wirelessnwifi.com/index.php?···ts_id=42'
The Aircard/Modem itself is free or close from about any cellular carrier in the country.
Plus you then have the ability to yank the aircard and use it solo when the router isn't needed.
So $500 and you are stuck with Verizon, even if you are in an area where they are not the best service. Spend $500 and be stuck in your car?
