Faster tier starts showing up in Indiana

Insight Communications broadband users (at least the ones that aren't going to be transferred to Comcast at the end of the year) tell us that the company has started pitching 20Mbps/1Mbps speed tiers in several markets. According to one user in Indiana, they're bumping customers from 10Mbps to 20Mbps for an additional $20 per month. They apparently started limited advertising a few weeks ago:
I received the flyer in the mail - evansville, and called Insight. They are adding Boomerang!, and some other channels near the end of the year. But the news I wanted to post - they are implementing a new internet speed: 20Mbps. Supposed to be twice as fast. They signed me up over the phone for a special price of $20 extra a month. She said when it goes public, it will be more expensive. She said it would be turned on my pc tomorrow.
Our Insight speedtest archive tells the tale. Upstream speeds seem closer to 1.5Mbps. We've inquired as to when additional markets can expect the faster speeds, but the ISPs like to keep market launch details close to the vest.

Nope. Unfortunately that max I see on my 10Mbps/1Mbps connection right now in 1.5Mbps. I think if you pay for external news group service then I think you can max out your connection, but I'm not positive.

That is what I was wondering. it isnt uncommon for ISP provided Usenet service to be capped in some form or another.

 Insight outsources it's Usenet services to Giganews. They allow up to 6 connections and each one is limited to 256kbps (kilobits per second). This equals to about 1.5mbit in total. I've never hit it, but most users say there is a 30GB/month cap on it also.

Bah

No thanks. $60 a month for 20 Mbps simply isn't worth it. Then the lame ass 1 Mbps upload to go with it is a real kick in the head.

I don't know what service you have but I'm paying 52.95 for 8/756 from Comcrap. Needless to say I'd be all over 20/1.5 for $60. Honestly I'm getting tired of everyone announcing speed increases except Comcast at this point. I'd like more upload already please.

1 edit		 20/1? I'll pass. This is like buying a car with tires that are capable of 250mph but an engine that can barely reach 60.

The extra download speed is nice but what about the upload? This amounts to marketing hype. Make yourself look like a player in the broadband game by announcing that you're now offering 20mb downloads! I'm guessing you have to search the fine print to find the part where it mentions your upload will still suck (if it mentions it at all). Sounds like an Insight competitor has (or soon will) announce a speed increase.

One thing I never understood about this company

and that is why Mr. Willner and Co. never decided to expand it further.
Having once lived in their service area and even having derived my RR Rick name from using their service (they're Insight RR in columbus, ohio for anyone who isn't aware)..I can attest to the fact that they're certainly among the finest ISP's out there.

Here we've been this century in the midst of perhaps the greatest business revolution in history..at least certainly as far as cable, hsi and digital phone goes..and there they sit..seemingly content to be what they are and even downsize with the spinoff of part of their territory.

I can't help but to wonder whether their CEO should have handed over the reigns a few years ago to someone with more motivation in that regard. That's certainly not to knock him but IMHO...if you can't, won't..or don't want to lead in that regard I really think it's time to consider stepping aside and let someone in who can and does want to do that.

I mean..what if Papa Roberts had been like that? He'd still be running a cable co. in Tupelo Miss. (Comcasts birthplace).

Again, it's not to be too critical because one certainly can't argue with the success of Insight as it was over the years..but the springboard for the real big time was there..

and they just walked past it.

Mr Willner..why not shake things up a bit? And get on the growth train. There are many markets out there who could use your brand of competition and service. Talk to your money partners and get a launch going here in Ct.
Who's here..comcast and pewverse.

You could run uverse out of here in a week I think.

Live it up a little Mr Willner. It's never too late for a second breath of fresh air.

And lord knows..you'd have a salesman in me.

I'm in Evansville, IN and while I have not upgraded speeds yet, I was told by Insight that the new package is 20Mbps down and 2Mbps up.
