Faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds?

If you didn't know, Insight Communications CEO Michael Willner is not only a frequent reader of Broadband Reports, but he also runs his own blog. In a new post, the CEO states that the company is "planning some exciting changes for our customers that will be revealed in the next few weeks." Lifting a page out of the Obama playbook, the company is running a series of ads with words like "change" and "more" as the primary theme. So what's changing? Insight isn't saying. What's Insight hinting at? Well, aside from the usual suspects (higher HD channel count), the carrier could be gearing up to finally launch faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds -- given they've been testing DOCSIS 3.0 tiers up to 100 Mbps for quite a while. The company's fastest offering is currently 20 Mbps, unveiled in 2007.

Competition is good

Windstream now has an area or two with 24 Mbps fiber, slightly faster than Insight. AT&T U-Verse is 18 Mbps, slightly slower.

U-Verse however has a nice TV lineup.

Hopefulls Insight will launch D3, but to compete with U-Verse more HD channels are probably at the top of the list.

Re: Competition is good

Insight isn't very big. I mean it's nothing compared to ATT or even Windstream.

With U-Verse you also pay MORE to get most of the same channels you get on Cable's expanded basic line up.

More Bandwidth

I am very excited about this. I hope they unveil a 100/50 tier.

Would you pay a lot extra to buy it if they did?

Re: More Bandwidth

It depends on how they market it. If it's an addon of 20-30 bucks a month that can be added to any existing bundle deal, than yes.

If it's 120 bucks a month by itself and would break any existing bundle to get it, then no.

I would get it too, if it was that.

Well just as a benchmark, Comcast recently dropped the price on their Extreme Tier(50/10 mbps) to $100 as part of a pkg and $117 stand alone internet only.

I would expect a 100/50 mbps tier to come in around $150 stand alone and maybe $135 if part of a pkg. Maybe more.

Of course, I have no idea what Insight now charges for their normal speeds.

EDIT: Checking their current prices, they offer 20/1.5 mbps for about $50 as part of a pkg and $60 stand alone. »www.cedmagazine.com/Insight-ramp···ome.aspx

Its possible with Docsis 3.0 in both 4 channel and 8 channel mode. I think more realistically though a 50/20 or 50/30 tier is more likely. Which I am fine with too.

Columbus, OH

If that is the case, I have a feeling us Insight folk in Columbus, OH will be left in the dust as Insight here simply re-brands Time Warner Cable's Road Runner service here. I believe that the speeds of the service here are dependent on what Time Warner does, but I could be wrong.

and thats why i've left for WOW

Re: Columbus, OH

I wish I could leave, but WOW doesn't serve my area (they do serve an area just 3 miles away) and AT&T only offers DSL. My biggest wish is to get a faster upload speed (512 up is pathetic) and it's kind of sketchy. It would help immensely with hosting multiplayer matches on Xbox Live.

Re: Columbus, OH

Might be coincidence but the Insight trucks (3or4) have been in our neighborhood the last two days.

Maybe Columbus won't get left out.

Nope, those are just trucks out doing reg maintance. Insight columbus speed tiers will always be what Time Warner offers as long as they rebrand RR and not use their own backbone.

More Speed...

One of their major problems is telco competition. The communities they service all have telco's who are willing to put fiber in the ground "except ATT" and are not laying down. For example in Northern Kentucky Cincy Bell there is deploying a ftth solution which will cause Insight to upgrade it's plant to compete against them in a small marketplace.

Yep. I'm in Florence in the Tara condo's. I was told by Bell they would be going live with their ftth solution in October in my condo complex.

Time Warner

Officially sucks now! Are they ever going to upgrade?

Re: Time Warner

I remember reading once they had plans to upgrade to DOCSIS 3 in 2008 and 2009, but scrapped it because it didn't post a high enough ROI.

cable change

@windstream.net

Insight cable tv change

On the cable tv side Insight needs a better user interface and program guide for the Insight dvr service. The current Insight tv guide user interface is well just a joke. It is to slow and is very outdated. The Insight dvrs also need more record storage space. And Insight how about some more price choice in your channel packages. So get with it Insight and get some change going with your cable tv service.

I miss Insight

Insight covered my area of Indiana before they unwound the deal with Comcast. My cable service has pretty much sucked ever since.

Please, Insight, come back to northern Indiana!
