But is still having bundle battle with Windstream
(old news - 01:35PM Monday Jul 30 2007)
tags: prices · competition · business · cable
Insight Communications and Winstream are engaged in triple play price combat in the Kentucky market. Insight is offering a "$40-$30-$25" plan, which offers cable for $40, 10Mbps broadband for $30 and VoIP for $25, according to local news outlets. Windstream has responded with bundles of their own -- the lowest starting at $69.97.

The longevity of Insight's offer is dubious, given that the company seems close to selling their remaining 639,000 Kentucky customers for $3 billion. Of course, 684,000 Insight customers will become Comcast customers on January first of 2008 (see details), a process the company insists will be seamless.

If you listen, you can hear Los Angeles Time Warner Cable customers (who just got done with a much larger transition of their own) saying "Yeah, right."

I'm sorry to see

Mr Willner and his partners sell the remaining company off.

As a former Insight customer in Columbus, Ohio..and actually, their very first broadband customer the day their predecessor, coaxial communications..rolled it out in early 1998...(just a one way system back then..cable download telco dialup return)..I certainly had a long history with them and found them to be a world class operation.

I think this is a VERY exciting time to be in this business and really envy those who are and the opportunities that are before them. The opportunities for growth are incredible and while many choose to acquire others these days, I think they sometimes forget the wealth of business sitting there in their homes passed markets, where customers aren't doing business with them today.
Actually, I think that the right strategy today by the right cable operators can see them literally taking over the phone business in their respective markets. Triple play is a powerful tool to accomplish just that.

I guess the money that these assets are commanding these days though is a real temptation. 4000~5000.00 per subscriber is a nice premium to be had. But, still..I think that it's worth it given the opportunity for growth for those with the right strategies and ambitions.

Personally, If I were this companies CEO, I wouldn't be selling it. I'd be getting VERY excited about that which I owned, and really putting the pedal to the metal..and growing this business and expanding into new territories.

Opportunities don't come around like this everyday to be a part of something so big and exciting.

And, to sell it off before it's even out of the gate just seems wrong to this outside observer.

Good luck though..to everyone involved.

And, may the best company win.

And how many people said this day would come

I'm not going to tell you I or anyone else told you so. Ok yes I in fact will. Because myself and a few others have been bringing up this topic for a few years now. I know I covered it on my blog when Insight went private. No surprise the assets are going to the highest bidder. In the end this will most likely leave customers with many headaches unfortunately.

Insight in Columbus

At least the Columbus customers should get off lightly. They are already on Road Runner so there should be little change on the modem side, assuming they are acquired by TWC. They already connect via the same datacenter as Mid-Ohio TWC.

An interesting feature of the Insight system in Columbus and vicinity is that the power supplies are all backed up by natural gas-driven generators.

According to the story, TW isn't even in the bidding to acquire them.
Apparently, there's some tax issues which prevent them from doing so right now.

WOW..on the other hand, appears to be interested.

That could make it pretty interesting in cols between them and TW if they do.

Re: Insight in Columbus

Ah, I didn't know that. Yes, interesting. I would like to know how much service area overlap there is. As far as I know (not far, apparently,) TW and Insight do not overlap. WOW has overbuilt most of the TW area. WOW and Insight??

Re: Insight in Columbus

I don't know to what extent, but I know several friends who can get both insight and WOW..and it's been that way for quite a while now.

Just a hunch, but I think that WOW is probably pretty aggressively going after trying to acquire Insight.
It would just make so much more sense for them to get it than some of these other names mentioned. TW would be a natural fit but if they're out of the running..next up is WOW IMHO.

I don't think that insight customers would be dissapointed with that end result.

Re: Insight in Columbus

As an Insight customer, I wouldn't be disappointed with that outcome. WOW is one of the highest rated ISP's that exists.

They are one of the few companies that I would be happy with if they purchased the remaining Insight systems. I really don't want a huge player to become my overlord. Moreso, I entirely do not want Suddenlink either.

From a logical standpoint they are in a pretty good position to do it. They already have a presence in Columbus and Evansville (I believe). They also actually have the cash to do it.

Re: Insight in Columbus

I'm exactly the opposite, if WOW buys, I'm gone. last year, WOW acquired the other cable company here, and I'm not impressed, they haven't changed a thing. If they buy Insight, my choices will be WOW or WOW, the next town over has TW, I'd be happier if they bought.

Re: Insight in Columbus

Sorry to hear that.

What are you not impressed about?

I know that WOW offers slower speed tiers and their max is 6mbps/1mbps. For me, this is not a large problem. Though I definitely would miss the 10mbps.

Are there problems with the service? Limited programming? Customer service not responsive or helpful enough?

Perhaps I am misguided.

·RoadRunner Cable

Well, here's some info from the Columbus Dispatch this AM.

Seems there is a pissing contest between the Big Ten TV network and the cable outlets. As it sits today, 80% of the Big Ten viewing audience will NOT get to see their team play football this year. The network wants $1.10 per month for each cable subscriber (that's subscriber, not viewer) and the cable companies, at least TWC, want to include it as a premium offering so that the viewers have to pay extra.

It's going to be an interesting next four weeks in the Midwest.

But to get to the point, the article also disclosed that TWC has "more than two-thirds" of the Franklin County (Columbus are) cable market.

It would seem that TW might have changed their minds.

Deals

I just signed up for Insight cable/BB.

At first I was told it would be $120 to get started and $85 a month. After a few minutes the rep (really cool guy) bumped me down to half off my first month, a free year of showtime, an HD DVR and no setup fees.

My parents up North just ditched comcast because it was Pushing $160 a month for HSI, and an HD dvr with standard cable. CMT was pulled from the lineup and then offered as an accessory which really cheesed them off since that is their morning wake-up channel.

Lets see some more competition

I was misled!

The title gave me quite a scare when I first read it. Then I read the post four or five times before I realized that it was about competition between windstream and insight. I used to live in Lexington, where the competition between these two is mostly taking place I imagine.

"Insight Evaporates Before Our Eyes", when read, said to me: "oh no, it's done ".

Re: I was misled!

I was kind of scared too. Then I realised, "how am I posting if Insight is done?".

Windstream is available in my area, unfortunately the highest speed they say I can get is 3Mb/384kb. I'm only 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the CO and that's all I can get? I'm going to stick it out with Insight as long as I can. I'm a little worried what will happen to the Insight forum, since most of the helpful users will move to Comcast in January.

By the way, when I click on the Windstream link, it takes me to Alltel's wireless page. Are Windstream, and Alltel the same company?

Re: I was misled!

Alltel spun off their landline business, and merged it with Valor Communications, and then renamed it Windstream. Alltel is now wireless only.
