Insight To Launch 30 Mbps Service But it won't be via DOCSIS 3.0 -- yet A few weeks ago, Insight Communications began teasing users about a slew of upcoming changes, launching a new ad campaign in the process. On Monday Insight CEO Michael Willner posted a blog entry announcing how the company was going all digital and launching some new HD channels in a number of markets. Unfortunately, the announcement didn't include a DOCSIS 3.0 launch, though Willner added another blog post today that notes a faster 30 Mbps downstream, 3 Mbps upstream DOCSIS 2.0 tier is coming. Willner had this to say about DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades, which the company has been testing for some time: Our Broadband 30.0 service will be our last speed upgrade prior to launching DOCSIS 3.0. We already have been working diligently to prepare for the launch of the newest DOCSIS platform, now that we are completely comfortable that the new technology is scalable and reliable -- two critical tests before we launch any new product. We have a real appreciation about how important DOCSIS 3.0 is for future broadband services as new high-bandwidth applications are developed and we always want to be the leaders in speed, reliability, and affordability for years to come. For today's needs, Broadband 30.0 will bridge us very effectively to the time we launch DOCSIS 3.0. Usually, cable operators that take their time in deploying faster DOCSIS 3.0 technology aren't facing particularly tough telco competition on the next-generation broadband front. As for the new 30 Mbps tier, Willner didn't give a price or launch date for the tier, but he did say it's coming before the end of the year. | Re: So, contrary to what people say..... No, you do need DOCSIS 3.0 to get to COMCAST'S 22 Mbps tier because that's what Comcast has decided. However they had a 22/5 DOCSIS 2 business tier available in non-D3 markets for the same price as 50/10 business on D3. Midcontinent Communications has 25/2 non-D3 service. Cablevision has 30+/5 on DOCSIS 2.0 with OptimumOnline Boost. OTOH SuddenLink requires DOCSIS 3.0 for its 20 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up tier.
It all depends on how many subscribers you have per node, as to how much speed you can offer on a single DOCSIS channel (or four DOCSIS channels for that matter...I may be wrong but I think that OOL 101 Mbps is over just three channels, with 114 Mbps total capacity, versus my 22 Mbps plan that is spread over ofur channels on Comcast). | |

As an OOL customer, I can verify that their Ultra (101/15) tier is CURRENTLY 3 Channels (with I'd assume plans to go to 4 Channels when needed). Even those 3 Channels are deceptive since there are actually only 2 Ultra channels in use with the third being the Boost Channel (and thus shared with Boost and subject to Boost Congestion issues). Since the Ultra tier is still not being used that much there is no need to have the 4th Channel yet (due to the limited number of Ultra users on any single node).
As to the Comcast Issue, it is a good setup since it gets D3 Modems into the customer's hands (and thus available for a potential tier that NEEDS D3) while using the Bandwidth Load Leveling that using Bonded Channels provide. This way if one channel is congested, there is extra bandwidth to pick up the slack on other channels. | |

| | | I'm thinking they might be running more than 1 downstream channel to each node. Not D3 bonding, D2 can only tune one channel at a time, but at least they could put half of the modems in the node on Ch 1, and the other half in Ch 2 during provisioning.
I'd like to see how the speeds test during peak times. Also curious of their homes passed per node and penetration rates for HSI. | |

I'm curious as to what Windstream will do in Lexington, KY, now that their fiber-based 24/1.5 tier is no longer the fastest on the block. Of course, if I remember correctly this tier is just $45 per month so they may well keep some value-minded customers, however I hope for WS-fiber customers' sakes that they'll kick things into high gear and one-up Insight. 36/3 service, maybe? 30/5?

According to the post on Mr. Willner's blog, Broadband 30.0 will be priced at $15/mo. over the price of Broadband 20.0. I currently pay $44.95/mo. for Broadband 10.0, 20.0 service is $10/mo. more ($54.95/mo.), so Broadband 30.0 should be about $69.95/mo.
Would I pay $70/mo. for 30Mbps Internet? I don't know that I would, but then again, I also wouldn't mind having Broadband 20.0, either. Just my $.02.

| Re: Wonder what Windstream will do My 2¢ is that $70 for 30 Mbps download speeds is great, especially when you consider that this tier is available in more rural areas and Comcast's 22/5 service is more expensive than that.
OTOH you only get 3 Mbps uploads. Better than most markets for TWC, many markets for Cox, all markets for DSL and pretty much every non-D3 cable market and non-fiber telco market, but still 3 Mbps isn't blazingly fast. | |

| Ready for a while Many of us on the 20.0 package have been getting the 30 for sometime. Here the results now and this is actually a low 30.
Its pretty stable for the most part even during evening hours when things are pretty busy, theres been some hiccups but overall the internet part as of late has been real good.

| | Limitations on modems and bandwidth. Comcast's policies are designed to ensure quality control and that you and your neighbors get what you are paying for.
The max throughput on D1.1/2.0 is 38 Mbit but that is shared with a group of other customers.
Capacity is managed within each group to ensure that a high percentage of the time you will get at or close to advertised speeds.
You are much more likely to get 22M if you are in a group using 152 Mbit total than one sharing 38.
Comcast is doing you and your neighbors a favor and covering themselves legally by requiring the modem. Buck up and but or rent one. | |
