Intel Gobbles Up Texas Instruments' Cable Modem Business Will focus on whole-home gateways for cable industry Intel this week announced they've struck a deal to acquire the Texas Instruments Inc.cable modem chipset product line, though the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "All employees of Texas Instruments' cable modem team received offers to join Intel at sites in their home countries, primarily Israel, and will become part of Intel's Digital Home Group," says the company's press release. Intel, who has been a key player in DOCSIS 3.0 development, says they'll fuse TI's Puma product lines with DOCSIS 3.0 technology and Intel SoCs to deliver advanced set top box, residential gateway and modem products for cable operators.

This would be bad news for Motorola which is in the process of spinning off the handset division and focusing on government and broadband. Motorola doesn't have a history of coping well with competition, especially in the consumer market (car radios, televisions, "surf" computer modems and now cell phones). They only do well when they have an early lead and monopoly in the market.
So, if this is Intel getting into the actual product, not just chips, Motorola's going to be just public radio.

And I checked Amazon, still 4.5 average, and even recent history seems to be pretty good overall.

| Step one of a larger plan to get into the living room? With Intel getting TI's docsis chipset line, paired with their CE3100 and 4100 CPU's, I think this just is the beginning of their plan to make it into your home.
A set top box, DVR, or some kind of gateway device, Intel wants in, and if they make it, we will all benefit. Paired with something like an NVidia Tegra2 chipset, we'll finally have the ability to have flashy full HD user interfaces on our cable set top boxes that are on par with what you can see on your computer screen.
