'Internet Slowdown' Day to Protest Flimsy Neutrality Rules

On September 10, a large variety of websites, companies and organizations will protest the FCC's (so-far) flimsy net neutrality rules as part of an "Internet Slowdown" day. According to the effort's website, sites won't actually slow services down (though that seems like it might actually be more effective, though irritating) but will alert visitors on how best to contact representatives and the FCC to let them know they want real net neutrality protections.

Etsy, Foursquare, Kickstarter, Mozilla, Reddit, and Vimeo all plan to take part in the protest. Even porn websites say they'll be lending a hand.

"FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler’s proposal to allow discrimination online is a disaster," states consumer group Free Press. "Everyone from the companies to the artists to Congress to the president knows that we need real Net Neutrality to prevent broadband providers from discriminating against content or applications."

You'll note the lack of involvement from larger companies like Google, who over the last few years have done an about face on their defense of neutrality as they try to keep the rules away from wireless networks and potential "creative" new revenue-generating ideas.
