Is The 'Quadruple Play' Finally Here?
After years of hype, it might actually be getting closer...
by Karl Bode Tuesday 29-Sep-2009 tags: business · wireless
For years, the "quadruple play" bundle of VoIP, broadband, wireless and TV services was more hype than substance, with the vast majority of customers barely interested in bundling more than two services. Even Comcast CEO Brian Roberts used to downplay the idea of adding wireless to the mix, but with Comcast's decision to fund and resell Mobile WiMax deployment, he clearly changed his mind. With companies like Cox and Comcast fully embracing wireless, the New York Times wonders if the time for the quadruple play has finally really arrived. The problem is, many of these 4G services are still seen as a luxury because of high prices. Users: how many of you are signed up for four services? How many would like to be?

It's a luxury for many because it's an desire, not a necessity. There are other alternatives in many places. Plus in some cases it comes with low caps and outrageous fees or just limited coverage, it's still a luxury to most.

BTW, I had Quad-Services with Verizon (Landline, Cell, HDTV and net). I dropped HDTV for the expense which changed the "bundle" price discount less $5 and a savings of $70 month (that was the Extreme HD package with STB (non-DVR) ).

I would like to drop the LandLine but the quality of the Voice over the Cellphone is unquestionable. Plus the reception in my home with Cell is less than 1 bar (drops too frequently). Am I a recipient for FemToCell.

Pricing is key

I have AT&T for wireless and AT&T U-Verse for Internet, TV & VoIP. Yet they don't offer any extra discount for having all U-Verse services let alone wireless.

I'm looking at moving to a different cell provider since AT&T has gone down hill in my area and does nothing to discount customers that have all four services.

Re: Pricing is key

I agree there. I am using U-verse HDTV, Digital Voice, and Internet service. I am loving U-verse so far. However, I asked AT&T for a quote on how much I could save if I bundled my cell, that is currently with Verizon, with them. The answer turned out to be $0/month. Therefore, I am keeping Verizon. I am happy with Verizon wireless due to their great reliability and the fact that switching to AT&T will save me no money. If there were a possible savings, I would be tempted to do a quadruple play with AT&T U-verse.

O, you can get free femtocell service in your home after you purchase the femtocell from at&t. There's an added value for you.

Coverage, coverage, coverage.

Most people I know that pay for a data card does so because they travel frequently, not because they want to use their laptop at the coffee shop down the street. If Comcast and Time Warner want to get people to spend more on "mobile" broadband, they need coverage that makes it useful. While I'd love to see more competition for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon, I just don't see cablecos rolling out a full national cell network.

So, unfortunately, I think the only approach that makes any sense is for them to partner with an existing cell carrier.

AT&T offers a true quadrouple play service in U-verse areas - cellular, landline, TV, and broadband - integrated with one another, and all on one bill. Unfortunately they just haven't figured out how to do bundle discounts yet.

That's my point AT&T really doesn't offer quadruple play at all. Having it on one bill means absolutely nothing IMO. What do we know were just the consumers .

i could honestly see a cable company making a pass for sprint sometime in the future. they seem ripe for the taking and have the towers in place already.

AT&T wants to be the most expensive provider, but considered a "Premium" service. They aren't in a hurry to compete on price.

im sure they like to pull that "we are the BMW of wireless" excuse for their prices. problem for AT&T is unlike cars there is another carrier willing to give me BMW quality at Kia prices.

one of reasons why they secured the iPhone exclusive, they have expensive service and know that right now they have the hottest selling smartphone for the past several years and you can only get it on their network(without jailbreak of course).

Really they're the most expensive provider? What planet are you on? Verizon and AT&T charge the same amount for voice and basic data packages. Like I have stated I'm looking at going to Verizon or Sprint. One thing that irritates me about Verizon is the website is horrible trying to figure out pricing structure and wording of some data plans. Sprint's site is hit or miss on working.

Sprint and TMobile are the only big ones that are cheaper not counting cricket, metropcs, etc.

Double- or triple-play with one or two being wireless, maybe

I don't need TV. I don't need $40-a-month VoIP (MagicJack is actually great on sound quality, as is my cell).

So that leaves internet, mobile internet and mobile voice.

I probably wouldn't switch to Comcast for mobile voice; my current deal with Sprint is too good and I'll be moving our of Comcast's footprint before two years from now.

Internet is a given though, and mobile broadband is pretty big for me. If Broadband2Go was available in my area, I'd have it. That or I'd have Sprint's uncapped-upload version.

Single play

All I need is one fast, unencumbered, wireless internet connection. Everything beyond that is just gravy (and I don't care for gravy).

Phone/mobile phone -- Google Voice for voicemail (I don't like talking on the phone anyways). Skype, ventrilo, steam or some other free or cheap voice chat service for talking to my family. Landline 911 service is free.

TV -- OTA TV suplimented with online content viewing.

Re: Single play

About OTA content: Its funny how with an decent outdoor antenna, you can get more channels than you could 15 years ago via cable in some areas. Even with rabbit ears, I can get about 20 or so due to the DTV mulitcasts on most local channels. Some people may not be that enthusiastic about the contact of those, but they are at least available.

Will be short lived.

Home phone service via the cable company or telco a rarity in the futurem, eventually people will get use to their cell phone being their only phone.

People are cutting the cord on phone service and it is going to get worse. IMO home phone service is on its way to being a free service /perk for those that buy internet service, which is going to get a whole lot more expensive int the future.

Not for some people until cellphone providers stop raping bandwidth. POTS is 64kbitps, a cellphone is 9.6kbitps. Guess which one has higher quality?

I Can Care Less About "Quadruple Play."

In the end, I only care about one thing. What, to me, is the overall best value? And what one person considers a good value, is different from others due to varying needs and/or wants.

That and well, do you really want to have only one company handle all of your communications? At least with different companies there's some semblance of redundancy, even if it's not really redundant at all.

sure, why not.

I know verizon does not call it quadrupleplay but they do offer a discount if you have there wireless service and want there triple play. Thats what the rep told me.

Only Two Services

I only have two services being billed together, TV and Internet with BHN. My wireless is with at&t. I would never bundle more than two services together, I think the billing just get too confusing and too much of a hassle for what its worth.

Time for Quad is here!

Honestly right now I'm using only 3 out of the 4. but the only reason I don't have VOIP is because both my wife and I have cell phones and thusly dont need a landline. but as our daughter gets old enough to use a phone it will be a necessity for emergencies at the house im sure.

if quad's the same price

let's face it, cable phone VoIP is basically free with broadband (see MagicJack), so charging for it is pure profit. if companies instead gave you basic cell phone service for the same price as current triple plays, then they'd have something compelling. unfortunately Verizon could join this bandwagon anytime, so the Cable companies would only end up provoking Verizon into being an even more attractive competitor.

I Will Never Quadruple Play

What if, God forbids something happens and your money is up and down, mostly down and you stuck in a contact. Then you cant' pay your bill on time. That means no tv, no internet, no voip, no cell phone. That's too much to lose for not paying one bill.

Re: I Will Never Quadruple Play

If your living that close to the edge then no. Put some money aside just for your quad play if your that worried about it.

Doesn't matter anyway, in a few months everyone will have the same internet, same colored house, same square footage (make build model), same clothes, eat the same food, drive same car, etc. After all, its easier for the goverment to requlate when they only have 1 model of everything to distribute to the masses. HHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

hmm, I wonder how they are going to get all the women we date to look the same?

I wonder if I could get some sort of date bailout? anyone heard of this federal program?
