It's Obligatory Annual Apple Internet TV Service Rumor Time!

Each year, for much of the last decade now, reports have bubbled forth that Apple is in talk with broadcasters or cable operators about offering their own television service. Except every few years reports also emerge that note Apple is having a hard time getting the broadcast and cable industry to budge when it comes to more progressive channel lineups and pricing models.

Apparently it's that time of year again. ReCode is once again claiming that Apple is in talks with broadcasters to offer an (wait for it....) over the top video service that's absolutely nowhere near complete:

quote:
The theory is that Apple would put together bundles of programming — but not the entire TV lineup that pay-TV providers generally offer — and sell it directly to consumers, over the Web. That means Apple wouldn’t be reinventing the way TV works today, but offering its own version of it, with its own interface and user experience.

Apple has shown programmers demos of the proposed service, sources say. But talks seem to be in the early stages, which means terms like pricing and timing aren’t close to being ironed out. Several programmers say they’ve yet to start talks with Apple at all.
Of course this will be followed up by the same reporters in May penning exclusive stories noting how Apple has struck a wall in negotiations, because the cable and broadcast industry is worried Apple will do to video what they did to music (hurting the cable and broadcast industry's cut of TV and set top revenue). Though with 2015 seemingly being the year Internet video finally makes up some ground (SlingTV, HBO), maybe this time around will be different.

I'd love to find a complete one that didn't cost an arm and a leg.

That's funny I've got 2 sitting about 2' from me one with a System Saver ][GS the other with a Applied Engineering's version with a Disk tray and a 3.5" Drive in it. The other has 2 3.5" Drives on it. They have a whopping total of close to 1 GB of HD space LOL I Still have tons of floppy discs with old games and apps. Some I even wrote I also have another couple of rarities the CD Drives that would work on the IIGS Even an old Apple One Scanner

Sorry OT but I had to add that

I actually still had mine until 2006, when a massive local flood swept it down river.

I still have my old Atari 800XL with a 1010 and a 1050 when I was a kid. Can't wait to fire it up for my kids, just need a few new power supplies.

Right now, I have an Atari 800XL with a 1010, a 1050, and now a XF551. I'm working on repairing an old C64 (keys missing) with working 1541 and 1541-II drives. Eventually I'll get a 1571 and a 1581, but that's later.

My goal? A complete Apple IIgs, Commodore 64 (or 128), and Atari 800XL for archival use (I have a bunch of old floppies) and to show my kids what computers were like back then and what they're capable of now.

Re: CableCard

That's not Apple. Say what you want about Apple, but the company is usually fairly good about taking semi-complicated tech and dumbing it down for the lowest common denominator.

Heh.. An InfiniTV or HDHomerun Prime with a CableCard. Problem solved.

Advantages? InfiniTV can have up to 6 Tuners while the HDHomerun has 3, BUT has DLNA support.

What problem does that solve, exactly? Seems to me, that is just the status quo.

No need

No need to buy an expensive Apple TV when it comes out.

Just buy a Roku TV that is already available.

Re: No need

Aren't the Roku 3 and Apple TV about the same cost?

You people are missing the point that Apple may be just big enough to pull off content licensing rights. Roku? Probably not so much. Netflix is just starting to apply enough pressure that content creators like HBO are starting, slightly, to defect from cable content ranks.

However, it isn't nearly enough.

Waiting game...

Apple can afford to wait on this.... And move at the right time.

Apple goes into markets where it can corner/control the technology and experience for the next 3-5 years over its competition.

There's nothing to control here yet. Cordcutting is happening, and it will play into Apple's favor if they wait for the current market players to be more desperate.

The iTunes music deals happened because Apple could negotiate from a position of strength as the labels were wallowing from piracy.

We don't yet have that in TV... But it's coming.
