Competition in the country gets fierce
(old news - 10:13AM Saturday Dec 22 2007)
tags: business · wireless · alternatives · world
The Japanese government has issued licenses to allow two of the country’s wireless providers to offer WiMax. The licenses were awarded to a handy-phone firm called Willcom as well as to one of the country’s three main mobile phone carriers, KDDI. Other carriers will be allowed to use WiMax but must lease the frequencies from those two companies which received them this week. This adds additional competition to an already tight market between the three major wireless carriers in the country.
“Softbank, which was planning to work with Internet services provider eAccess Ltd. has submitted a complaint to the telecommunications ministry about the decision, according to Japan's top business daily the Nikkei, opening a new chapter in Softbank's continued battle with the government over control of telecommunications. Softbank President Masayoshi Son has repeatedly contested such government controls as holding back Japan's technological and economic growth.”
Analysts have warned that taking on WiMax deployment is an expensive endeavor which isn’t likely to turn a quick profit. But that hasn’t stopped the new providers from stating ambitious plans. KDDI estimates that it will spend over $1 billion to bring WiMax to ninety percent of the country within the next five years.

Model of competition

... Japan is a model of competition in the communications industry. Wish the USA's leadership had been similarly pro-active.

I don't think that NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Corp would agree with you because the Japanese Gov't just shut them out of Wimax. And saying they can get leases from the 2 winners doesn't mean a thing. Those 2 companies won't give NTT or Softbank the leases and are not required to.

Re: Model of competition

so what you're saying is that the lack of choice we have here is a good thing? aren't you Mr. pro business on this site? so it's ok to have only 2 companies dominate a market here in the USA but when you see it in Japan it's a bad thing? sounds a bit hypocritical don't you think? so secretly you agree with most intelligent people here and think the 2 party broadband system we have here is bad and AT&T, Verizon, Concast etc.. should be shut out of the 700 meg auction and we should have a legitimate 3 choice in the United States?

In the United States, you can get reasonable broadband for low prices and if you don't like it, you can always move to somewhere else that has good broadband... I love the American system, it would really suck to live in a country where the monopoly is EVERYWHERE...

~$40-50/month for broadband isn't expensive considering the salaries and cost of living in the N.Y. metropolitan area.

Re: Model of competition

sorry to say but in Manhattan the triple play is 156. a month. that's without HD, only 2 premium channels and without renting any on demand movies. To expensive. I have no choice. Verizon does not offer FIOS here yet and even in areas where they do they keep both services similar in price.

I get triple play for $138/month which isn't bad and it includes a DVR, Movies and 2 HD boxes with FIOS, plus a free LCD HDTV, heh...

But we're talking about broadband here... I think broadband is a relatively good deal... For $40-50-60/month you can get a nice connection in the NY area.

Re: Model of competition

Here in Japan we pay about US$60 a month for 100Mbps/100Mbps FTTH. (My measured speed is about 86Mbps.) Businesses can opt for 1Gbps/1Gbps FTTH service for about $400 per month. FTTH service is generally available within a 3 mile radius of a telephone CO (about 80% of the population, IIRC).

Of course, all of the ISPs offer first year teaser discounts. I chose to pay $40 for each of the first 12 months. Other ISPs offer two or three months free, instead. The ISPs try to squeeze profits out of add-on services like TV over internet (miserable satellite-like channel choices and poor package values) and VoIP ($0-5 per month, but you pay 2.5 cents per minute for every domestic call and more for international). For raw internet connection though, I don't know of a better value anywhere in the world.

Well at least they have 2. Our licensing system seems to be grant the spectrum licenses to *one* company. We'll have to see how open they let it be. They've been great in other communications areas like broadband and wireless.

Question: If it's NOT the truth, and everything is great with our leadership and efforts in this (and many other) areas, then please explain why we need Ron Paul as President?

Oh please. Get a grip. Do you see any "The USA sucks because" in there? Now, if you want to say it's bashing the leadership (Or lack thereof) on this issue, well, I can't really deny that.

2.5Ghz helps Sprint/Clearwire

The 2.5Ghz usage in Japan will help keep device costs down for Sprint/Clearwire, who also use 2.5Ghz. Hopefully other parts of Asia and planet Earth will allow WiMAX on 2.5Ghz as well. The consistency not only keeps production costs down, but makes roaming easier too, w/out needing extra radios.
