New 3G iPhone helps to up the ante

Mobile TV is hot right now for a number of different reasons. Several companies have begun launching mobile TV on certain handsets. Mobile broadband is becoming more ubiquitous. And people are getting used to watching television on devices other than their TVs. Steve Jobs is making efforts to make sure that the iPhone is a leading platform in this new area of web development.
"A couple of weeks ago, Jobs announced that he was opening up his iPhone platform to third-party software developers. The venture fund of Kleiner Perkins has just announced a US$100 million fund to support software makers, with the fund's vice chairman, John Doerr, describing Apple's software plan as the "third great platform" after the PC and the Internet. Think of it as the broadband Web plus a touchscreen TV in your pocket -- powered by the latest mobile TV entertainment software. Add all this to the growing library of professionally produced video content in the iTunes store and you might well have glimpsed a sneak preview of life after television."
In addition to plans for making the iPhone a major tool in the development of mobile television, Apple is updating the iPhone to please wireless consumers. The company recently announced that it will be launching a high speed 3G iPhone in May or June of this year. It is believed that three million of the new phones will be available on the market within the next month or so with eight million more to follow later this year.

How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

Apple and Jobs certainly knows how to play their fanboys for suckers. I wonder how many will shell out several more hundred dollars for the latest iPhone? And what features(other than 3G) will Apple hold back so that they will pay a few more hundred dollars next year in Apple's never ending game of planned obsolescence?

If Apple cares about their customers they will allow a VERY generous trade in allowance for those upgrading to the 3g iPhone. But I wouldn't bet on it.

Re: How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

I might, but with an Aircard I really don't need it. Edge is plenty fast for my mobile needs. If the new 3G iPhone offered teathering and a Slingbox client, I would bite in a second and simply cancel my AT&T Aircard plan.

Meanwhile technology companies upgrade their products constantly.

I don't see Dell offering generous trade in allowances on their computers when the next generation of computers is release. The new Penryn systems are out...where are my rebates? Don't see other cell phone companies doing it either. You buy what is out at the time.

But for some reason Apple is the only technology company expected to offer upgrade rebates.

Only a fool thinks that ANY technology is free of obsolescence. The current gen iPhone will serve people for many years to come. There will be no forcing of anyone to trade them in on a new model.

Dell also isn't requiring you to sign a 2 year contract to use their computer either.

The sense of entitlement to some sort of discount by current generation iPhone users comes from the fact that Apple and Cingular/ATT have locked them into using their existing phone for 2 years.

Yes, I know you can do a SIM swap but most end users think they're tied to the phone for the life of the contract unless it breaks.

Since (legit) iPhone users are locked into paying a fairly high cell phone bill every month just for the privilege of carrying the device, I tend to agree with them. If Jobs & Co were selling units without a contract, at reasonable prices, then I'd agree people shouldn't expect anything. But since they are locked into a contract, I think it's reasonable to expect some sort of remuneration. (Most likely that of being able to buy the new iPhone at the 'contract' price instead of 'full retail' - even though Apple doesn't sell any at 'full retail' in the US anyway.)

Re: How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

All the major cellular companies lock people into contracts and the AT&T data plan is competitively priced.

My Verizon Treo 700W was $599 with a 2 year contract and service is $10 more than I pay with the iPhone. And when the price dropped significantly I didn't see Verizon offering up a store credit like Apple did. I also don't see Treo ponying up any discount for a new phone. Verizon on my biz plan expects me to pay retail for any upgrade and I'll only be eligible for a subsidized phone when my contract is up for renewal. When I spoke with them, they wouldn't even give me a discount if I extended my contract.

What cellular phone manufacturer offers rebates for upgrades?

All technology evolves and all these companies come out with new products. Anyone who wanted a 3G iPhone, should have waited for it just like anyone who wanted a Penryn should have waited for it.

Meanwhile since the full functionality of the existing iPhone will be intact for many years, no compensation is warranted. People are getting exactly what they paid for and Apple and AT&T are living up to their agreements.

If they want a discount, they can take it in the form of selling their old phone on eBay.

Re: How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

Historically, Treo users always got a discount on an upgrade to the latest version from Palm/Handspring. You just had to order from their site and enter your serial number.

When Palm basically "died" and started offering Windows Mobile devices, that policy disappeared.

Carriers wanted to force complete control of devices into their own hands. That's when upgrade discounts disappeared.

Re: How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

So I ask again, what cellular phone manufacturers are offering discounts to upgrade? Why is Apple the only company expected to do this?

Reasonable prices are prices that the market tolerates. Given that iPhone is soundly outselling all the Windows devices combined, it seems that the current contract terms and pricing is plenty reasonable.

Just because someone doesn't want to pony up $400 for a smartphone with a 2 year contract, doesn't make the price or terms unreasonable. Their choice is to buy this one device or not buy this one device and buy any of the other zillion that are on the market. Every other choice rightly belongs to Apple and AT&T.

And whether there will be discounts for upgraders remains to be seen. Apple did after all take the unprecedented step of offering store credits when they dropped the price. I saw no such credits from Treo or Verizon when the price of the 700W dropped shortly after I bought. My guess is that Apple will sell both phones, just dropping the 2G phones price further and introduciong the 3G model at the 2G's old price.

If there is tethering, I'll buy the new 3G phone and sell my old one on eBay and that will be my "ugpraders" discount.

Good point. You certainly don't see other companies' mobile phones being replaced by newer models every year. Apple stands alone in this respect in the technology industry. A sucker born every minute, right?

Generous? are you serious?
Apple knows its sheeple are loaded and will follow anything with an "i" in its name. apple users get price breaks on NOTHING!, they overpay for everything and are happy to do it.

Re: How many iPhone Edge users will bite bullet & upgrade to 3G?

Gotta love the Apple's are overpriced myth. Apple notebooks are competitively priced when comparing feature for feature. Apple's all-in-one is cheaper than either Dell or Gateway's all-in-one. No one makes a machine as small and fast as the Mini for cheaper. The Mac Pro, at least when I bought, was cheaper than the similarly configured Dell. Fact is, when comparing apples and apples, the Macs are very competitively priced. When ignoring software, feature set, and form factor, all of which cost money from ANY manufacturer, you can build a POS for a few bucks cheaper.

Apple isn't in the $200 junk PC market where there is no margin and never has been.

This myth has already been debunked here a zillion times which PC zealots always having to resort to comparing apples and oranges in order to get the price down. Next up from the ignorant, rants about the one button mouse and contextual menus.

iPhone Popularity -> Slower 3G Deployments

I wonder if AT&T is using the popularity of the iPhone as an excuse to slow 3G deployments. All the iPhone has done is given EDGE a 2 year extension on life.

Ugh.

Re: iPhone Popularity -> Slower 3G Deployments

No such conspiracy exists. At the time of iPhone development there wasn't a 3G chipset that offered the power and size requirements necessary for inclusion in the iPhone. While 3G certainly existed, other iPhone components took up substantial space and power.

Now, a few years down the development path, that portion of the phone can be upgraded to include more modern 3G components.

Don't mind the fact

That trying to watch TV on a device which such a small screen is like trying to pick natshit out of pepper. Then compute the fact that the battery life of said 'phone' is then shortened drastically.

Another useless feature that the iPhone fans tout as ultra-useful, but in all reality is about as useful as 21 inch rims on a dodge neon.

And what world is this in? I have never seen anyone and I mean ANYONE with mobile tv on there phones. Hell, I have the feature on mine, but its not even supported in the entire state. So, I call BS on this news topic. Its just more bloat that they try to fit into a phone. Its not practical and its retarded.

Just my opinion.

Mobile TV is hot!?!?

Care to enlighten us with market studies showing the usage rates of Mobile TV? I can see like to moderate use on a device like the iPhone when the 3G version is out or even on the WiFi version out now -- if that counts. But most people I know that even have the option for Mobile TV don't bother due to carrier usage rates, small screen size and battery life. Those who have Mobile TV quickly grew tired of it once the novelty wore off. Not to mention that Mobile TV is really last years news and reminiscent of push Internet services of the 1990's like Pointcast. Now if Mobile TV is getting lumped in with two-way mobile video then that is a whole new topic and one worth these electrons.

More people use MobiTV for free these days then pay for it I would bet. Especially with those links that were posted a few weeks ago on another message board.

Re: Mobile TV is hot!?!?

Am I missing something? I have yet to figure out who is going to watch mobile TV other that people commuting on mass transit and kids in the back of soccer mom mobiles. If I'm going to spend money or time watching TV, it's going to be in the comfort of my home in a nice chair with a big screen, not crammed next to big guy in a bus seat or walking down the street with a 2" LCD screen that gets washed out in direct sunlight.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I think mobile TV will go the way of the picture phone...a gee whiz wonderful application with millions of dollars thrown at it that no one really wants except the people marketing it.

iphone

well i will give the iphone props for atleast having a screen big enough to watch something on.....every other cell phone's screen is to small.
