Satiated system faces problems with demand
(old news - 11:55AM Saturday May 05 2007)
tags: Video
Joost was doing all right for itself during the beta phase; programming and advertising have been falling into place and beta users seem to be happy with what they’re getting from the new broadband video service. But then the site went live, allowing beta testers to invite an unlimited number of others users to check Joost out. Maybe they should’ve put a limit on that; informitv tells us that “although based on a peer-to-peer assisted network which should theoretically enable it to scale to a virtually unlimited number of users, the dependency on servers in its distributed data centres has resulted in problems under the load of new users.” The service has been temporarily unavailable to some users as Joost works out the kinks.

Re: Accuracy?

joost never took full advantage of my upstream data rate. I toss joost on a server with 1gbps connection, it uses 50kb/sec...

picture quality & selection sucks

Click for full size
Typical Joost picture quality
I joined the beta, what a waste of time. The viewer crashed instantly and I had to figure that out. I got it fixed and there is nothing but crappy old reruns. The picture quality was really bad worse than Real Player.

Great product

I beg to differ.

WHen I beta tested it the quality was very good. there were a lot of shows and i didn't mind the ads (except the volume got louder like a normal tv during them). I didn't have any problems with the system crashing and the response time was quite quick for p2p. I am personally amazed by the service and I think they need to set a limit on how many can access it so quality service can be had by all.

False Alarm???

Just logged in to Joost.
There are stacks more channels available, have not finished adding them all.
I have noticed in the past that when they are about to add a few channels it gets a bit funky for a day or two...
Also, while it occassionally glitches, generally the video quality and resolution is far better than anuthing I have seen at Yahoo Launch, AOL or MSN video.

If I'm correct Joost runs on OpenGL? I hate all OpenGL apps.

P2p is for the client

From what Ive read, the p2p is only used for downloading/uploading the client.

Maybe it's just me

This is one of those services I'm leery to utilize because I don't want to become reliant on it just to have it become unavailable due to legal or monetary issues.

Isn't Joost founded by the same guys that made Skype then sold it to ebay for an insane amount of money?

The problem isn't legal issues (Joost is actually going by the book getting the rights to the content it shows), but more a question of demand/bandwidth constraints. As to the fact that the shows it is airing are all older, that is largely because the closer content is to current, the more likely the rights will be closely held by the content owner (especially content that can be sold into syndication and/or DVD) and the *less* likely that content will be permitted onto a free service like Joost. I have Joost! Friends Edition running on Windows Vista (and on older hardware to boot) and am having no problems other than the expected bandwidth issues. I can run it either full-screen or even in a window; as long as I have bandwidth, playback is clean as a whistle. (Considering I'm on the East Coast, and the US Joost server is in Los Angeles, that's darn good.)

riiight...

I have yet to get it to work on Mac OS X. It skips and stutters like nothing I've ever seen. Cool concept, but not ready for prime.

Works for me Thanks Qwertinsky

Just downloaded. Watching air force one on national geographic. it works great.

ON BBR it's b10010011.
Thanks again the service works and they have real programs. No not live, but the cable companies wouldn't like that.

Satiated?

"Satiated system faces problems with demand"

How do you satiate a system? And does it roll over, light a cigarette and smile at you?
