Time Warner Cable a possible suitor
(old news - 08:48AM Friday Apr 24 2009)
tags: Video · business · alternatives
While broadband video service Joost had an ambitious launch, the operation has since landed with a thud at the feet of more popular alternatives such as Hulu. Founded by Janus Friis and Niklas of Skype and Kazaa fame, the service hoped to revolutionize the broadband video industry, struggled with slow broadband speeds, internal turmoil and a contractually-limited catalog. Last winter, Joost ditched their P2P approach for a more Hulu-esque flash-based website approach. Joost is now apparently shopping itself around to Cable TV and satellite companies. One of the interested companies according to CNET? Time Warner Cable.

With caps what is the point of this service again?

Time Warner Cable doesn't like online video

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The real reason behind Time Warner's insanely low caps was to kill online video (or at least make money off of it via overage fees). If they buy Joost and reinstate the caps (something they've indicated they plan on doing), you can bet that Joost access won't count towards your cap. I don't think they'd worry that it'd be a huge Network Neutrality violation. At least not until a huge customer outcry erupted. Then they would suddenly "care" (until the outcry died down, that is).

It they did that(make it not count against caps) I would e-mail the fcc daily and put up a thing on the web so others could do so too.

I don't think that TWC would be that stupid. They can see where the Net Neutrality trends are going with the new Congress & FCC.

Re: Time Warner Cable doesn't like online video

You haven't dealt with Time Warner Cable much, have you?

Seriously, though, I wouldn't put anything past them. After all, their caps maxed out at 40GB with overage charges. Even Comcast (who's gotten a lot of flack here for having caps in the first place) caps at 250GB. It's a lot easier to hit 40GB than 250GB. The only reason they're not going forward now is the huge public outcry. They're hoping it'll die down and then they can proceed with the original plan (perhaps with a glossier PR coating).

Back from the dead

lol I was just thinking of Joost the other day when I got my new 24" monitor..but then I remembered why I stopped using it..they don't have crap for shows on it.

If Time Warner does buy Joost, they'll probably do what Comcast is doing with their fancast, and keep the caps on the service (if they go ahead with the caps nationwide)

Has Joost been watching TWC?

After all the press about TWC, hasn't Joost been paying attention?

They're trying to KILL OFF Broadband Video Services by instituting LOW AS HELL caps. That means that you'd eat up a ridiculous amount of bandwidth and not know it.. until you received the bill in the mail.

..and another thing.. I thought TWC was hurting for cash and their idea to help revenues was to propose "Metered Billing". This is just another pile of bullsh*t from TWC.

Re: Has Joost been watching TWC?

You do realize this is about control. Wake up people and contact your senators about this nonsense. There's a bill in the works that, if passed, will make this shit illegal. and I'm for it.
