1) Population density 2) Government built telecom (NTT Japan was government built, still partially government owned. Similar situation in South Korea) 2) Investors willing to take on long term (30+ year) debt
Within the US cities you mentioned you'll still find pockets of places with better access. A friend of mine lives in NYC and his building provides 100mbps Ethernet access to all of the condos. Out on the west coast you have services like Paxio.
It's not that the services don't exist in the US -- they're just not widespread.

Rhode Island is very small and has a higher population density than Japan( the size of Montana for reference ) or Korea and you don't see 100 Mbps. Not even close. Most MSAs have population densities of 400 people per square mile or greater and that's where most of the populaion lives and yet no broadband close to the sppeds in Japan. And even the largest MSA is no where near the size in area of Japan or Korea so size and population denisty is not the issue.

And with all the people that access to ComCrap's "awsome speeds" only 26% of users have over 5Mbps. Could that be because, as I have said many times before, MOST people simply DON'T NEED super high speed internet? Granted, many can't get it but if you listen to ComCrap Rick, DOCSIS 3 and FIOS can't get here soon enough becuase the whole country MUST HAVE 100Gbps in order to survive.

wheres canada as not one ISP can say we have 5 megabit if they throttle us down for 10 hrs a day, that means canada would not appear on that list as averaged no one in canada has 5 megabit internet.
and a cap on all accounts faster then 5 megabit remember a 5 5megabit unlimited = 1300GB japans 1 gigabit has a restriction on downloads that = 900GB that means hte best account you can get in the world is SLOWER then YESTERDAYS 5megabit unlimited

| Not surprising. Fast internet with VOIP or cell saves money versus dsl and a landline. Internet banking, internet tv, saves on cable, saves on sending mail, saves on gas, etc.
I blame the same idiots who bought SUVs and trucks for years, and NOT because they had kids or needed it, because their stupid and don't plan for the future.
