Knology To Buy Sunflower Broadband
Sunflower users to say goodbye to their caps?
by Karl Bode Wednesday 28-Jul-2010 tags: bandwidth · cable · consumers · caps
According to Multichannel News, cable overbuilder Knology is preparing to buy Kansas-based cable broadband operator Sunflower Broadband (see our user reviews). The deal, which is estimated to be worth around $127 million, will involve the transfer of roughly 30,000 cable and telephone subscribers in Lawrence, Eudora and Douglas counties in Kansas (in contrast, Knology has about 600,000 RGUs). Sunflower was among the first to implement the idea of low caps and high overages ($2 for each additional gigabyte). However, the company has slowly been raising their caps as AT&T begins pushing uncapped U-Verse service harder into their markets. Sunflower customers may be interested to learn that Knology has no caps and is pushing forward with DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades.

Good Riddance

Sunflower was among the first to implement the idea of low caps and high overages
Makes me feel good when backwards-thinking companies get pushed aside.

Rates for broadband service continue to rise, while at the same time the costs to DELIVER the service continue to decline. Any company in the 21st century with the audacity to implement caps and overages is demonstrating how deep their greed runs. End of story.

Knology has how many subs?

NCTA's website lists Knology as having 200,000 subs. This article states 600,000. Which is it?

Re: Knology has how many subs?

Looking at their first quarter earnings (2nd quarter earnings aren't out yet), it looks like they might actually be closer to 700,000 total voice, TV and Internet connections.

Re: Knology has how many subs?

don't confuse "subs" with "units" (RGU=revenue generating unit)...if you have the triple play at home, then you have 3 rgus. also, knology does well in the small business field for data/telephone lines...better than Comcast.

Re: Knology has how many subs?

Yeah I see now they're using the term "connections" instead of the fairly standard RGU unit...

Good on you, Knology

$70 for 50 Mbit service with a 250GB cap isn't bad...until you find out that the service comes with a paltry 1 Mbps of upload speed. Contrast this to Knology's tiers: 12/2, 25/5 and I think one higher than that. prices will go up for internet service, but I don't think anyone will mind since caps will be going away...and on lower tiers SFBB has some ridiculous caps.

You shouldn't have a cap if you're paying $70/month for internet service. "Not bad" is far from accurate.

You shouldn't have to pay taxes either. Life isn't always fair.
