LTE iPad Already Being Produced
Verizon, AT&T Compatible Device On Sale in March
by Karl Bode Monday 16-Jan-2012 tags: business · wireless · hardware · alternatives · wireless
A report in Bloomberg proclaims that an LTE version of the iPad 3 is already in production, with Apple's manufacturing partners in Asia ramping up production of the device this month with the intention of reaching full volumes by February. In addition to supporting new AT&T and Verizon LTE networks, the new tablet will have a quad-core chip with a significantly higher-resolution display. There's no iPad chipset in the iPhone yet due to size and battery constraints, something the tablet doesn't face. The iPad 3 is expected to go on sale in March, according to the report.

When more apps require the quadcore processor, let me know. Retina display is a gimmick. Lastly, my LTE Ipad2 works great right now.

If its a quad core, I want it to be running Battlefield 3 on full detail.

Retina display is a gimmick.

I take it you are on a 20" monitor at a resolution of 1280x1024? Thats about the dpi you get with an ipad currently.

I don't know anyone who holds an iPad a few inches from their face. At arms length with a 720p 10" screen, retina really will be a gimmick.

Have you ever compared the display between a 3gs and a 4? The retina display is quite amazing.

Yes I have and there is a difference, if you put the phone up to your face. If I hold the phone a reasonable distance from my eyes the differences disappear.

Retina makes a bit more sense on a phone since people tend to hold it closer to their eyes because of the small screen. On the iPad, it doesn't make as much sense.

Can I see pixels on my iPad 2 if I look at it really closely? Yes. Do I see it with normal day to day usage? No.

A retina display will just jack up the cost of the iPad 3, with little benefit.

What is really needed is more Ram for the processor. iPad1 had 256MB. iPad2 has 512MB.

iPad1's get frequent low memory conditions where the OS(especially since iOS5) jettisons a running task. And for me that means the browser crashes every hour or so.

A friend has an iPad2 and doesn't see that problem.

But if Apple expects the new iPad to do even more multi-tasking using those 4 cores and handle larger more resource intensive applications, then they should upgrade Ram to 1GB.

Yep. I have an iPad 1 and ever since iOS5 came out I've been getting a lot more crashes, especially when I have multiple tabs open in Safari. It's annoying, but I plan on getting the 3 when it comes out so I can live with it for another month or two.

Uh no, higher resolution doesn't only make a difference on a phone. Considering you think a tablet with a 1024x768 screen is good enough, and anything else is a 'gimmick', I think I shouldn't waste any more time talking to you.

Actually, you should have a look at this.

To be honest, when it comes to screen size, there is a big difference when it comes to what you can tell through resolution.

The Retina display isn't going to be a selling point for me.

Uh no, at arms length it has poor dpi. If you can't see this try an eye doctor.

If I didn't win my Ipad2, I would have a Samsung Galaxy Tablet. :P

iPhone

Hopefully an LTE iPad will ensure that the next generation iPhone will feature LTE.

Re: iPhone

While a LTE iPad sounds tempting ...

It would make more economic sense to get a LTE mobile hotspot ...

This way ANY wifi device you have will have the opportunity of LTE.

Yes ... you will have to carry around the hotspot ... but I think your wallet will thank you in the end.

To get an LTE based iPad will probably be the same as a mobile hotspot for the plan ... but if you want to turn the iPad into a hotspot, your going to need to pay for that too.

Re: iPhone

Also ... with an LTE MiFi ... you will only have one device to constantly charge ... with the other devices using just WiFi N ... you will get better battery life out of your other devices.

Re: iPhone

I think the best option is to get a tethering plan on my phone and then tether everything off of that.
