Jacksonville, Chattanooga coming soon...
(old news - 06:20PM Monday Mar 23 2009)
tags: business · exclusive · bandwidth · cable · Comcast
Two different sources within Comcast have confirmed the company's tentative and upcoming DOCSIS 3.0 deployment schedule, which has not been officially announced by Comcast. According to the sources, Jacksonville is scheduled to go live before the end of the week. After Jacksonville, Comcast's North Central, Chicago and various California and Atlanta markets will see DOCSIS 3.0 expansion into additional neighborhoods, with Chattanooga expected to see upgrades around April 23. Here's a list from our source(s):
•3/26/09- Jacksonville, FL will launch residential D3

•3/31/09- 12 additional North Central sites targeted to launch.

•3/31/09- 5 additional Chicago sites targeted to launch

•4/09/09- 4 additional sites in Atlanta

•4/14/09- 7 additional sites in California

•4/15/09- 4 additional North Central sites

•4/23/09- Chattanooga launches residential D3
Keep in mind these are tentative dates, and we've seen other leaked DOCSIS 3.0 launch targets miss their originally scheduled mark by up to a month. Once again, Comcast says they'll upgrade 65% of their footprint by the end of this year, and 100% by the end of 2010.

As we've discussed, upgraded DOCSIS 3.0 Comcast markets see the company's $42.95 "Performance" 6Mbps/1Mbps tier become 12Mbps/2Mbps, while their $52.95 "Performance Plus" 8Mbps/2Mbps tier becomes 16Mbps/2Mbps. Upgraded markets also see two new tiers: $62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and $139.95 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps -- both of which require a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem.

Same here. Nothing but wireless ($99/mo. for 3mb/512) or dial up or satellite. I like my 16/2 blast with powerboost.

utah

was hoping to see salt lake market on that list. I know they've been upgrading the ctms' over the last several weeks in the region.

Oh well what can we expect since the only competition here is qwest which is usually 1.5 dsl. Utah just barely got Blast!. Every day broadband users in utah wish they lived in a utopia city.

Promises are moveable guesses

I signed up for notification of the docsis 3 service and got an email from Comcast it is in my area a week ago. But no change yet doubling the standard speeds from 6/1 to 12/2.

You can check here:
Plug in zip code

And I get this when I check.

But I still don't see the new speeds.

•3/31/09- 5 additional Chicago sites targeted to launch...
They announced deployment in Chicago in Dec.. So far nobody within the city limits has it. So when they say "5 additional Chicago sites", do they mean more Chicago suburbs or are the actually going to venture into the city that they claim is getting the deployment?

I live in Area 4. I think Comcast divided the city of Chicago into five zones.

Re: Promises are moveable guesses

The city was divided into five zones when the original CATV franchises were doled out. It was supposed to result in more local ownership interests, competition and better service. Instead we got Comcast eating everyone except RCN.

The five sites Comcast refers to are their mega-headends not Chicago zones.

Did that once a day for last week. Powerboost on download shows about 15 mbps, then as 64 MB download continues, the speed eventually drops back to about 6.2 mbps and stays there.

cmon S. FL!

Would be nice if they announced something regarding south Florida or even just S of Jacksonville. This is prime Uverse territory, not to mention FiOS is dominant in the Tampa Bay/St. Pete area - seems like the whole S FL area is ideal deployment grounds for D3...

Competition

Isn't competition a great thing? Chattanooga (where I'm from) is a relatively small market for both Comcast and AT&T, yet they are high on the list of the Uverse and DOCSIS 3 rollouts. I wonder why? Could it be a municipal fiber rollout? Chattanooga Electric Power Board is rolling out fiber optic to its whole installed customer base (160,000 customers) in the next 3 years. Would Chattanooga be getting this attention if there was no competition?

Yup. I've asked around and my local Comcast contacts tell me nothing is happening yet down in SE FL for DOCSIS 3. They do tell me that it is their understanding that once the work does begin, conversion can be done for a large area within a few months. So, we could still be in the 2009 gameplan if they get their deployment teams down here soon! I'm not holding my breath!!!!

So where do we fit in? Denver is a pretty huge market and is a bit of a network hub for Comcast, yet still has DOCSIS 1.1 speeds to my knowledge in the whole city.

In short, when're we getting the upgrade? Additionally, will Golden (a bit to the west) get an upgrade similarly time-wise?

Yeah remember the last "leak" that came out about 2 months ago? Denver was on deck. Now who knows. I think I remember hearing some time around September?

I am on D1.1 here near Buckley AFB, but my brother who has comcast near C470 and Quebec St. has D2.0

16/2 = Performance Plus in Fresno, CA

I upped my Comcast connection to their "Performance Plus" tier about 6 weeks ago and I've been getting 16/2 (not power boost) the whole time. I was rather suprised as the Comcast guy I spoke to on the phone insisted it was a constant 16/2 connection as opposed to 8/2 + powerboost. I ignored his comments but sure enough - I get a steady 2MB/sec on all downloads... tested MANY times over via usenet, bittorrent, linux distros, etc etc.

Fresno, CA is the market. FYI this is not coined as "BLAST!" or anything like that on their website or from CS reps on the phone. This is still a 2 tier market.

Any thoughts? Is this happening elsewhere?

Re: Chattanooga

EPB or not, Comcast would have deployed D3 with in 2 years. In the next two years we will not HAVE to have 50+Mbps. EPB keeps telling use we NEED fiber because there is no other way to get High speed internet. They imply if we do not have fiber NOW this very minute we will be come the next Detroit with massive un-employment and high crimes.

Maybe I would have more faith in EPB's intentions if Chattanooga's leadership was not so corrupt.

In the end it will be a win for the consumer until EPB slips costs over to the power side of the company.

"increasing tourism,"

That's the problem. It's a tourist town now. We have the VW plant coming now but the other day there was news that we will exceed our carbon foot print so we won't be able to grab any more large manufacturing businesses. It's still unknown what exactly we have spent to get VW to come to Chattanooga.

In the last few years several members of the city council have gone to jail. The last sheriff is in jail. If Chattanooga could only lose the good ol' boy network and little town mentality it would really flourish.

!!! Upcoming prediction !!!

2009: ComCRAP deploying faster tier to help the residential costumer hit the 250GB bandwidth cap faster and more efficient way.

2010: ComCRAP introduces new bandwidth metered billing for residential customers $5/per GB. Along with breakthrough in SPI/DPI SW/HD device to manage bandwidth on their new Network Management System which slows down traffic 95% of the time even when the transit on the node is not congested 24/7.

2011: ComCRAP successfully builds the new Great Wall Of Interweb and blocks all in/out transmission other than users, service only offered within the network itself and declares war on Net Neutrality.

Have you went to the AT&T/Bell forum on this site? To think I am the most Anti-Death Star customer they have so far lol as only reason I even have service with them is because of 22/month for 6month ADSL 6mbps(8123kbps)/512kbps(508kbps) link. Soon as its over ill move with ComCRAP because of their upstream which is 2mbps here. As considering I upload TB that is Terabytes which you can't yet transmit or receive combined.

PS: I only support Verizon FiOS as they are superior compared to Death Star and ComCRAP combined.
