Five years and countless complaints later...
(old news - 09:27AM Friday Apr 06 2007)
tags: business · wireless · Op/Ed
We mentioned on Wednesday how Verizon Wireless seems to be backing away from their use of the word "unlimited" to describe their very limited EVDO wireless broadband service -- going so far as to actually admit the service has a 5GB cap. Now the Register leaks an internal e-mail that confirms the push to phase out the use of the word in promotional materials (a Verizon post in our forums confirmed as much). Fortunately, it only took five years or so for them to realize the error of their ways.

Hey Verizon Wireless, while we're on good terms: how about upgrading capacity and modifying your EULA, which restricts everything but browsing and e-mail? Your friends at Sprint not only have no caps, they actually encourage streaming. We also know that connecting cell sites or aggregation hubs isn't cheap, but how about a little price reduction? Perhaps $60 (plus ample fees) for 5GB capped service isn't very sexy. Yeah, we just want everything.

Interesting Aside

I know, this is the equivalent of "someone told me this" but, heck, I'll post it anyway.

A friend of mine who has one of these wireless cards faithfully checks each month to see how much bandwidth he has used. He claims he was averaging about 6-8GB a month. When I showed him the links from BBR yesterday about this marketing change, he then told me that Verizon no longer showed him his usage levels on their website anymore...

Re: Interesting Aside

There are still many Verizon users getting canceled lately. Check this thread.

Sprint has no caps, has a larger, faster EVDO network, more RevA and roams on Alltel EVDO too (Verizon doesn't). Sprint also gives user control for forcing roaming and EVDO. And GPS on some cards. Verizon is falling behind when it comes to data. They just aren't a competitive player in wireless data anymore.

Verizon only has 27,000 towers with 60 million users. Sprint has 30,000 towers with 35 million users and are adding 4000 more towers this year on Nextel sites. This is probably why Verizon has a cap but Sprint does not.

Re: Interesting Aside

Verizon would rather restrict users than properly build up the network with enough capacity.

Sprint has more spectrum and capacity than they know what to do with. WiMAX will step up the game even more.

About time!!

I guess the constant threat of a class action over their description of "unlimited" finally scared them straight.

Companies do not fear class action lawsuits. They are almost always able to structure the settlements so that they end up winning in the end. If Verizon were to be sued over this "unlimited" BS, the settlement would probably have a few hundred million in cash going to the lawyers, and a bunch of coupons for discounts on future Verizon service going to the class members.

The "costs" of these coupons will be written off as business expenses, and the members of the class would have to pay Verizon more money to realize the benefit of these things.

A real punishment would have been government action against Verizon for false advertising. If heavy fines resulted from such action, then it would force Verizon to raise its rates, and make it a less attractive wireless broadband solution for potential customers.

Increase speeds and volume; but cut costs

Well that doesn't compute. Increase speeds; remove caps; expand infrastructure; but cut those prices. Well, when costs go up, so do prices. Ever hear of inflation?

That is not the point.

The point is you don't advertise one thing and provide another. AOL got hit with it when they went to the "unlimited" model.

Here is, more than likely, what happened. Verizon thought about wireless internet access and came up with the idea to sell their cards and service. When they put a price point on it, they thought they would make money. They probably never took into account the amount of traffic or the amount of data people would be pushing.

This shows either the extreme naivety or the complete lack of respect companies have for their customers.

just by the way...not ALL costs are subject to inflation.
if you think they are, feel free to pay me 2003 prices for a plasma tv. it will seem like a great deal for both of us!

and yes, i know that isnt a fair comparison, but just pointing out that costs increases dont need to be accepted as a given.

Re: Increase speeds and volume; but cut costs

But the "supply and demand" equation will always drive costs. There are many more plasma TVs on the market (enabled by lower manufacturing costs and advances in technology) now than there were in 2003. That's not necessarily the case for broadband access

Does not compute....

This does not make much sense to me.....

We aren't talking about a 10/1 cable ISP who will cap you/cut you off after 100GB - because it can interfere with other customers.

We are talking...what.... less than 1/1?

Unless verizon is paying someone else for the cost of their data....i don't get how someone even using it 24/7 can hurt anyone?

Re: Does not compute....

My Treo stays connected to EVDO 24/7. It's not staying connected that's limited, it's a 5GB cap that's limited. Though, really, the connection is so slow and horrible, I can't imagine really using it for anything other than browsing and e-mail. Even that's pushing it. SSH works fine, but that's against the EULA.

People who get cut off for 100gb of downloads really should complain. If you maxed out a T1 for a whole month that's about a terabyte.

Re: Does not compute....

Actually, saturating a T-1 24/7 for an entire month would only net you about 475GB, not really in the realm of the mega Comcast hogs, but definitely up there.

If you receive a warning and continue to exceed the cap, then no, you should not complain. If the cap is invisible and your service is disconnected without notification or reason, then yes, I see justification to complain.

I put 150gb on my Verizon BroadbandAccess (EVDO) account a couple of months ago, and I haven't heard from "The Man" yet.
