story category Leopard: What works, what doesn't
(old news - 10:44AM Monday Oct 29 2007)
It's day two of Leopard for me, and luckily most everything works as expected.

First, I'm happy to announce that the BBR IM Checker Widget is fully Leopard compatible, so grab it today if you don't already have it.

Moving on, the most major glaring problem I have is with Groupcal, a third party app that keeps iCal in sync with an Exchange calendar. It's worked flawlessly for me in Tiger but it's completely busted in Leopard. Snerdware's FAQ claims significant changes are needed, and the new version won't be out until first quarter 2008 so my license is useless until then. I'm currently hunting a new solution.

Growl works fine in Leopard but some of the application plugins don't, most notably GrowlMail. A message pops up telling you it's disabled when you launch Mail in Leopard. Luckily there's a quick hack to get it working again, thanks to a blog entry I found. It's just a couple of quick prefs you have to set:
So far, so good.

QuickSilver works but if you're using an older version you may notice the dock icon won't go away. This is fixed in 1.0b52, the site is down again but you can grab it from a mirror. I used to swear by QuickSilver but since Spotlight is so much more improved I may use it for a launcher instead.

Terminal finally has some new options and much-needed tabs, so I've given up on iTerm for now. Sorry, iTerm. It's been fun.

If you've got CS3 most everything there works, at least the stuff I use (Photoshop mostly). There are a few issues with Acrobat and some of the video apps. Adobe has released a Transmit, Unison, and Coda. Candybar doesn't work, which isn't surprising given the new icon technology in Leopard. Cabel promises use Candybar 3 is coming soon however.

And if you haven't yet, definitely read John Siracusa's Ars Technica Leopard Review.

iCal

One thing I noticed about iCal is the date on the dock icon is now (finally) dynamic to the actual date. It looks like they changed a little more under the hood of iCal then I thought.

Re: iCal

Yep, no more "iCal Day" to celebrate.

GroupCal

Have you found a solution to your calendar problem? Entourage 08 will sync iCal and Address book to it, but it's not a full fledge solution.
