Foneros unite
(old news - 09:22AM Monday Feb 06 2006)
tags: business · wireless
Google and Skype have joined VC's and just invested $21.7 million in a company named Fon. Fon hopes to create a national shared Wi-Fi network by convincing broadband customers to turn their residential Wi-Fi routers into paid or free ("linus" or "bill" members) hotspots, dubbing them "Foneros".

"As Foneros continue to join, and there are more and more Fonero hotspots, the dream of a unified global broadband wireless signal becomes a reality,” says a company exec, who explains his vision over at his blog. “The FON movement, as we call it, can achieve what 3G or EVDO has not -- a truly broadband wireless Internet everywhere.” Surely ISPs will love the idea.

In the US, the only ISP showing interest is Speakeasy. I don't see many others joining in.

This is another company pushing a share your WiFi access idea. Here was yesterdays version: »Sharemywifi.com
For my comments on this, see yesterday's msg thread:
»Against TOS for most ISPs and bad idea generally

After reading many of the forums here about speed caps, download caps, this cap, that cap, block this port and that port. All done without the knowledge of the customer until after the fact. That is until an end user violated some unspoken, undocumented, unaddressed issue in the TOS. I don't see TOS being a problem if a broadband provider decided to or not participate.

They'll just wave the invisible magic TOS wand and make it so.... so a end user can or can't do it.

Waste of time.. Will never work...
They want you to turn your house wifi on so others can use it so that they can grow into a business based on your sweat!

Giving access to wifi is like giving the keys to your house or even sharing that computer network with everyone..
You pay the bill and we make the money..

Wonder which smart one thought of this? must be a millionaire!

THUMBS DOWN! never will work! Don't waste your time

Re: Ummmm

Johnbor you have stated the truth! The person who thought of this turkey must be the same one who is hawking BPL, and that mystery meat gaming console we hear about every once and awhile from Florida. He must think there are fools born everyday, which of course is true!!!!!!!

“The FON movement, as we call it, can achieve what 3G or EVDO has not -- a truly broadband wireless Internet everywhere.”

Except the 99% of land areas not covered by residential hotspots, most of which have a hard time providing a signal inside the house, let alone outside.

FON movement? More like bowel movement.

Yeah no doubt some unanswered questions.

The first that comes to my mind is why would I even consider doing it? Would my ISP pay me? Who is going to assume the legal responsibilities? Just to name a couple.

I doubt that really want to pay you to do it. Even if they did, it probably wouldn't be worth my time and the hassles. The whole point seems to be a low/no cost way to grow their network. And I sure as hell will not extend their network for free.

Don't know about that. When I got my Verizon DSL connected at my home-dock, VZ sent me a "free" wireless linksys router. I have the wireless on, and open (default). Every once in a while, someone comes by and says thanks for the connection (I broadcast my Boat's name as the SSID), they pulled into the marina, discovered a "hot spot", and used it.

I am only using a piece of VZ supplied gear the way they sent it to me, how can they complain?

This whole "FON" thing is a bunch of crap, why should I pay FON to open up my router for others to use? Open 802.11 is almost everywhere, and should be encouraged, as a step towards community WiFi.

EULA?

I know the EULA through my ISP explicitely states that I am not permitted to either lease or give it away for free.

As much as I may applaud the idea, it kills their business model if by servicing me they lose 5 near by potential customers.

Counter intuitive. Better to go with a comunity coming together and setting up their own ISP. Not that I think that would work either, in the long run.

Re: EULA?

You are correct, Not only would we be making money for someone else out of the cost of our pockets, many I cant think of 1 (one) ISP that would not throw us out for violating their TOS. Giving open access to the public violates many of the terms not to mention on one day you may be spending thousands hiring a lawyer cause you have to defend a action from the RIAA or MPAA, cause someone decided to do some downloading...

This IDEA STINKS and is ROTTEN to the core!

It only makes money for them and causes headaches for us....

Did anyone read the site?

From the looks of it they have connection software that requires a user name and password. People leaching your internet and they not have a log?

And like what was stated earlier, I know every ISP I know of out there ships WiFi products with the network open and free. No hidden SSID or even Mac address filtering.

Silly idea? I am not denying that. But, most of the fears voiced in thie thread so far are baseless.

Re: Did anyone read the site?

You said:

"From the looks of it they have connection software that requires a user name and password. People leaching your internet and they not have a log?

So whats the point? A log and a password? Big deal!

You said:
"And like what was stated earlier, I know every ISP I know of out there ships WiFi products with the network open and free. No hidden SSID or even Mac address filtering."

Again, your point?
Your responsible for your network security.
Last I looked my alarm system company gave ma an alarm but I have to turn it on.

You said:
"Silly idea? I am not denying that."

First correct thing you said.

You said:
"But, most of the fears voiced in thie thread so far are baseless."

Nonsense.. read your ISP TOS then come back and tell us this. Don't cry here when they boot you or you get a lawsuit for illegal downloads.

I don't see the company mentioning a way out of this , do you?

Speakeasy says Fon lied; they have no deal

»blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com/vent···1476.asp
As background, here's the relevant portion of Varsavsky's announcement: "Also I am pleased to announced today that we have obtained the support of two significant ISPs for FON. In America Speakeasy has said that they welcome FON ... "

And here's the bulk of Speakeasy's response:

FON has incorrectly announced that they have reached an "agreement" with Speakeasy regarding FON's wireless service. This is 100% completely false. No relationship, financial or otherwise, exists between Speakeasy and FON. ...

We are currently involving legal counsel to demand a retraction from FON regarding their misleading announcement.
Well this little idea is dying swiftly.

Monkey-brained scheme

I pick up 3-4 wireless networks around me, so can you say "oversaturation"? This is the worst business idea ever.
