I guess didn't forget it, I don't ever recall seeing it. My earliest computing experiences go back as far as Apple IIs (green) and TRS-80s (b&w) in the late '70s and amber in the early 80s.

| Heh cool_coda, I think tech support will be disappointed exactly BECAUSE there´s less dead time on the phone waiting for reboots. The less calls they get, the less work they have. Take a look at dell for instance, they keep the same guy on the phone for 2 hours, at times, and 1 hour minimum. | |

After installing the client, you set the IPs. After setting the IPs, it asks you to reboot. Won't work unless you do.
I decided one day to find out where in the registry the IPs are stored and set them that way. Great, it worked out but the client still needed a reboot. I made two simple Strings for the IPs.
You see the problem? It writes the data, and will not re-read those two simple strings unless you reboot! Whoop-de-friggin-do!!!! 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of other programs write info in the registry and they don't require a reboot to re-read information! You know what? Basically Network Connections does the same, in regards to writing the settings into the registry. You certainly don't see the OS asking you to reboot after changing the NIC properties. Heck, you don't even need to reboot to reinstall/install a NIC driver.
If anything, I think 3rd-party software needs improvement. When Sun Java asks for a reboot, it works fine without . Same for VNC, Alcohol 120%, ...

The 50% faster boot they claim being better than XP... XP gave you a desktop faster because it also changed the order of how some services loaded giving you the appearance that it loaded faster when in reality, you were still "booting" even though you had your desktop. So I guess that slow down for the first minute or so was OK in M/S eyes?
But seriously, where I have the REAL problem is the damn name! Are they selling douche? or advanced technology? If I wanted douche, I would buy summers eve! | |

However, in the grand scheme of things, now that Microsoft has come up with this catchy play-on-words name, it's a pretty safe bet that that is all it will take to bring the pundits and analysts out of the woodwork to say "It's FABULOUS! STUPENDOUS! INCREDIBLY NEW! YOU"LL LOVE IT!!!" and the masses will eat it up without wondering what it's made of, which is exactly what the marketing folks in Redmond want.

Actually, since XP is Windows eXPerience, Windows Vista follows on a theme. "Gay" or not is immaterial. I'm sure the "Vista" name will only stick around for a short time, as "eXPerience" did when first released. They'll have some cute, truncated monicker for it by then.
By the way, calling something "Gay", or, "ghey" seems to be another sign of a intellectually bankrupt mind. It's usually a sign that that mind has nothing of substance to contribute so it just thrashes around so as to have something "controversial" to say to deflect attention from that fact. | |

1 edit | Take a lot more than a name... ...to get users to switch. I'm been trying out Longhorn and have yet to see anything compelling. It's not much more of a remodel over XP as MCE is.
They will have to have this compelling element in there if they hope to move people from XP. Boot times and launch times aren't going to do it. And neither or default user credential changes.
They'll need something "pretty" in there to get the majority of Win users to switch. Originally they were talking a major overhaul in the GUI with improved graphics, translucent menus and the like. It was supposed to be 'visually stunning'. | |
