Louisville Metro and Insight Com franchise agreement
by itch Friday 18-Nov-2011
LOUISVILLE, KY. (WDRB) -- Louisville could be looking for another cable provider. Metro Government and Insight Communications have not been able to reach a deal on a new franchise agreement.

This week the city told Insight that the franchise could be terminated. A letter to Insight executives says the city is willing to continue negotiations, but that certain conditions must be maintained, such as keeping a customer call center in Louisville that employs 900 people. Insight does not want to agree to that, along with other requirements such as providing free cable to government buildings and schools and mini-cable boxes to the elderly, disabled and poor.

Mayor Greg Fischer says if no deal is reached, the city will allow Insight to continue to provide its service until a new cable provider is awarded franchise rights.

Just typical politics

This boils down to just typical Louisville politics. A metro council committee proposed and passed a franchise agreement about a year ago. It however basically gave the cookie jar to Insight and was for a 15 year term. Fortunately when the proposal came before the entire council it was rejected! Since then I have been unable to find any meeting agendas for further discussion on the issue.

Now mayor Fischer wants Insight to give the city everything. Free service for schools and other public buildings as well as about $5,000,000 for use of public right of ways. All this is, is a hidden tax to consumers because we all know of the fee will just be passed on to them in the form of higher bills! The mayor already tried this with LG&E and this move was stopped by council. Hopefully they will also step in to prevent the franchise from being terminated.
