Sure beats 15 degrees and 6 inches of ice cover on the damn sidewalks. I wish the city would start handing out citations to those who don't clear their sidewalks.
|
| | |
Re: WeekendWhy would they do that? You know, since like no one uses sidewalks anymore. (Ok well some people rightly still do)

Re: WeekendWe use sidewalks to walk the dog. And yes I always pick up after him after he does his business. If he goes in the woods I just leave it.
The kids use the sidewalks to walk to school after busing was cut to balance the budget.

That is why most of them did not go to college. They finally got to school at lunch time and then had to start back to get home before dark.

I ride my bike on them (which is not illegal according to town ordinances). It's safer than riding in the streets, especially if you're not a great cyclist. I see quite a few other people using them along busy streets too.

Re: WeekendIt can be more annoying in ohio lol
Early spring can suck bad here. One day you can have 50 and sunshine and the next 30 and snow or 35 and rain then low 20s at night yeh that makes a mess of the roads haha.

The problem in my state is that it gets just above freezing so that water coats the sidewalks, then dips back below freezing and the water turns to ice. Then when everything is salted and sanded so that it's not slippery, the cycle repeats.

If they are our side walks and we are responsible for clearing them then why can we not fence them off or other wise bar their use by the public? I seriously never understood the idea. It may be in front of my house but i am not allowed to do any thing to it what so ever even repair it. That is do to the fact the city owns it. Yet i am suppose to clear snow from it and pay peoples medical bills when they trip on a broken side walk i am not allowed to fix.
I recently fell do to ice on a side walk and the people in charge of the place were panicked that i might file suit on them. I would never do such a thing. Legally it might be their responsibility but sensibly it should be the cities.

said by chip89:Around here I only have to do my driveway. The city comes and uses one of these for the sidewalk. That would never work around here. On the smaller side roads, half the properties don't even have sidewalks and where they do, they're typically only about two feet wide with trees and phone poles cutting into them. In one spot on the main road, right around the corner from my street, there's a tree growing out of the sidewalk, probably only maybe a foot from a low, concrete wall.

That would be a pain in many places because the new trendy thing to please the eyes of the hipsters is to install sidewalks that are curvy.

I'm lucky if the city even comes out to plow and/or dump salt or whatever it is on the side streets...main streets they do, but 99% of the houses have garages on the sidestreets ! From the first snowfall in November to Friday...city only came out 1x to plow down my sidestreet, plowing 8" of white crap onto my driveway Thank goodness my son comes from Amherst with his old blue pickup and even older attached plow on the front and does ALL the driveways/sidestreet and my neighbor on my right(she's 84).

Why should I have to clear my sidewalk if I'm not expecting any visitors?

Re: WeekendWe're talking about the public sidewalk on the tree belt. If someone walking their dog falls and cracks their skull then they'll be owning your house in most jurisdictions.
If you don't have a sidewalk on the tree belt then you have nothing to worry about but you could still be liable if a legitimate visitor slips and falls (say a mail carrier or a cable technician).
|
| | | | |
Re: WeekendSo wait. Where you live the city installs the sidewalk but then the home owner who's house it passes becomes liable for that sidewalk and is responsible for it's upkeep?

Re: Weekendsaid by battleop:So wait. Where you live the city installs the sidewalk but then the home owner who's house it passes becomes liable for that sidewalk and is responsible for it's upkeep? It was that way in my hometown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and its that way in Springfield, MA. Most jurisdictions are like that. It's the city's right under easement laws.

Re: WeekendWhen we do get enough snow to plow the streets you are then not able to get out of your driveway because it is up to your hood. They also plow the interstates in town by putting the snow on top of the banked curve. The temp may be up to 40F so it melts for several days but at night it will get down to 20F so you are on a banked curve with black ice between you and the pavement. Normally only one "big" snow a year. Our big snow might be called a flurry up north.

Can't even walk the damn dog without worrying about being pulled to the ground because people don't clear the friggen ice off of the sidewalks. City ordinance here says you must clear ice and snow off any sidewalks within 24 hours of a storm and keep it free of ice and snow.
And heaven help me if the dog sees another dog. I went skating when he saw another dog last night. At least skunks haven't been a problem lately.

.html That is going too far. But they do have to toughen up terrorism laws. Penalties are needed just for belonging to a terrorist group(not a couple years in prison like now in France; but the death penalty). And training overseas to be a terrorist(death penalty). Assist terrorists to prepare for an attack or evade capture(death penalty). Penalties must apply not just for taking action, but just for being a terrorist group member.

I think a good way to save the brick and mortar stores would not be to force online retailers to collect sales taxes but to require them to report deliveries to the state Departments of Revenues so they can bill the sales tax themselves if the online retailer doesn't collect the sales tax.
I'm at the Holyoke Mall and so many retailers are going under is insane. Three stores are going out of business. I think Amazon is engaged in unfair competition. At this point I'd support a federal interstate sales tax on online purchases that cross state lines but ONLY if the money went to road and bridge repairs. But the federal government CANNOT BE TRUSTED WITH OUR MONEY SO ITS A HARD SELL. I'd only support a new tax if another tax such as the estate tax is abolished completely.
Here in Mass you're supposed to report untaxed sales on your state income tax but nobody does. People even go to New Hampshire to dodge the sales tax.

Here in Sunny Southern California! 87 in some parts and just a beautiful day at Griffith Park. We encountered an extremely brave, curious, and intelligent eastern fox squirrel who came up to our park bench about 18 inches from me and stole some nuts and radishes that were on the picnic table... He came back several times...

Even pro golfers can be crime victims: Robert Allenby misses cut at Sony Open in Hawaii, goes out drinking; gets kidnapped. He was beaten up and kidnapped from a wine bar in Hawaii, robbed and dropped off 6 miles away.

I grew up in Iowa, when I was in school we were in school on all of the holidays such as Columbus Day, Veterans Day, MLK Day, etc. We only had the major holidays off like Christmas and Thanksgiving. School was out by the first week of June. Here they're in until the third week of June.
What holidays are off depends on the state.
