MS Recalls Troublesome Patch
Windows XP Update pulls internet plug for many
(old news - 04:36PM Wednesday May 28 2003)
tags: security · trouble
Microsoft pulled a security improvement for its Windows XP operating system after it apparently crippled many of the Internet connections of the roughly 600,000 users who installed it. According to this Associated Press report, the patch ('recommended' update 818043) was posted on the Windows-Update service last Friday, but didn't quite get along with Symantec products. The patch was intended to modify the way IPSec encryption was utilized by machines behind firewalls, as well as to improve the support of virtual private network VPN clients behind network address translation (NAT) hardware. Users in both our Microsoft and Ameritech forums have been discussing the troublesome update.

"wrong... a virus actually DOES something..."
You got that right, just one of the reasons I left that nasty beast.

[JOKE]
No, Windows is not a virus.

Here's what viruses do:

1) They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2) Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3) Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4) Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. Sigh... Windows does that, too.

5) Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. Yup, that's with Windows, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences :

Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature. So Windows is not a virus. It's a bug.

Makes more sense that it would be considered a "bug" instead of a "virus" because by nature, computer viruses are designed to do damage.

I think the patch was made to do this. What better way to secure Windows then to cripple its internet connection.

No automatic update for me

It seems that every time I bother letting the applet install an update (it is literally at the tune of a new update or two per week) something goes wrong with my PC and ultimately, it becomes intolerable to use.

I have since installed the OS and the service pack only, and my system has been running fine.

I say I'd rather wait until the next major service pack before I bother updating anything.

Re: No automatic update for me

I've never installed one service pack or a single patch. I run ZAP, BID, Panda and SpyBot on my PC's behind my router/firewall. Never had a problem...coincidence? I think not.

There are noticeable improvements, or rather certain nuisances go away, from installing the service pack, so I won't refute that. I guess it's a matter of personal preference.

Re: No automatic update for me

The only thing that's noticeable is the update to correct the update you just installed. If my systems don't crash and all my apps work to my satisfaction...why bother with the headaches. Because it's not just with the OS, then it's drivers for peripherals, etc, etc....it never ends.

Re: No automatic update for me

You have to understand that Microsoft never works around any software developers, the developers work around Microsoft. Not all developers will put software together that'll bode well with the OS, that including drivers, etc.

Re: No automatic update for me

Right, and most developers make their products to fit around MS' original offering, because they know that not everyone will have the latest updates and patches - though enough software out there will require the latest updates - catch-22

Security that rivals all routers and personal fw's

That is a real good security update actually
it's secure enough to not let you get online how more secure can you be than that

Most users with networks and firewalls dont need the entire network on internet access. Keep on dumby machine on the internet connection. When your done. Dump it into your absolutely secure network. The one with no internet connection.

My philosophy......

About the only "Automatic" process I let my computer perform is the "Plug-and-Play" function when I add new hardware.

I control my computer! No one else!

I never do an "Automatic" install on any software, unless I have no choice and have read other users comments about any bad experiences first.

I never use the "Auto Update" functions of any programs, including Windows.

I always let new Operating Systems and Programs "mature" before they find their way on my computer.

I avoid software or updates that I know "report home" or have automatic features that access the Network or Internet that I can't turn off.

I've been a happy user for almost 20 years now and am still smiling! This is just part of my philosophy regarding computer use that I've developed in that time. And it has server me well!

Why Bother

Now wasn't XP supposed to be stable and wonderful? Right!!!
OK, it's better than some versions but Microsoft seems to be hell bent on the "let's see if we can really stuff it up" scenario "panic stations, all hands on deck" deal.
I gave up ages ago on installing Pre Service Pack updates and just wait for the main Service Packs backing everything up before hand and always expecting the worse. Very Sad!!!!!!!

That's what they said about Windows 95sr2, 98, ME, & 2000 when they were released.

If it works, why change?

If I could have all OS's on the same 3rd party support level, I consider DrDOS 7.xx and OS/2 WARP (3 or 4) better alternatives. Both are true multi-tasking environments and have true running program independence.

If you never installed any updates from microsoft, copy and past that into your browser. It's funny that people think they are better off not updating windows.

Yah... I thought so

I found this issue out on Saturday when a customer installed it and we went to roll back. Told everyone in my support group about it.

I am glad that Microsoft is recalling it, since it caused so many issues and was definatly going to cause more.

I do remember alot of 3 green no surfs on Friday and thought to myself it was very odd.

If you guys think...

windows is so bad, then do something about it, get one of the several other OSes or a Mac and be done with it. With a Mac there's almost no problems, no updates that do more bad then good, and best of all, no mi¢ro$u¢k!

Got security?

I have the most secure PC of all. Needs no updates, maintenance or anything at all. I have a new style "dark screen" monitor sitting on the table with an AT keyboard and serial mouse sitting in front. CPU? Its one of those new kickass "invisible" models. If the crackers cant see it, how can they get me? My expensive dark screen monitor is supposed to keep people from looking over my shoulder at my passwords and cheat codes for Doom2.

At least thats what some short glasses wearing guy named Bill told me when he sold me this awesome box.

URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!!

i remember a few months ago there was a post i found in one of the forums regarding about one of MS's patch that SLOWED down many user's computer. i think i'm affected by this now. ATM i didnt expect i would be affected by it since i didnt feel any lag in my pc, but now every time i click on something for example right clicking a file and openning it's properties it would lag at least 2 sec before openning it. Before i formatted my pc, everything was fine and now after installing ALL MS's *recommendated* patches my computer has gone suuuppeeeerr slow.. THANX A LOT MS. I 've tried to use various tweaks but none has improved a bit.. so I need to know that one particular MS patch so I can uninstall it IMMEDIATELY.. thank you for all your help.
