MSG, Time Warner Cable Stand Off Continues
Both Sides Blame The Other, No Movement On Talks
by Karl Bode Wednesday 11-Jan-2012 tags: Video · business · alternatives · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Time Warner Cable
Since New Year's Day, Time Warner Cable customers have been unable to watch many of their favorite local teams -- courtesy of yet another retransmission dispute between a broadcaster and a cable operator. As has traditionally been the case this fight is about money, with Time Warner Cable refusing to pay what they claim was a 53% rate hike demand by MSG. More than a week and a half later and the companies still are at an impasse over prices, with each side blaming the other for the blackout. MSG continues to insist the 53% hike claim isn't true:

Click for full size
MSG says that the cable operator, the nation’s second largest, has rejected all of its proposals for two years. Time Warner Cable says that MSG has twice reneged on a 6.5 percent rate increase and that its final demand was for a 53 percent boost. "That’s just such a gross distortion of our conversations and it’s not anywhere close to what we’ve talked about,” said Mike Bair, the president of MSG Media. He added, “The sense of any movement to get the channels back on doesn’t exist."

Meanwhile cable customers, already feeling like they pay too much money for cable, are being driven to watch pirated streams of sporting events -- the same pirated streams broadcasters and cable operators spend their time (when they're not engaged in retrans disputes) complaining about. Like with all of these disputes it will end with customers paying more money -- after dealing with blackouts and an ugly game of PR ping pong.

Even..

longer for us in south texas. It's been a bit over 5 weeks since NBC and FOX have been blacked out. As a result lots of people are fleeing from time warner and going to other sources. I hear its taking up to 3 weeks for new installs with all the other major carriers in the area like dish/ directv/ and grande.

I have gotten so used to tuning in to NBC on my cable box that when I go to watch it on the rabbit ears and when i finish I go to pick up the cable box remote to change the channel and wonder why the hell isn't the channel changing.

I don't watch sports but our area is huge for cowboys and texas longhorns fans. There is even a cowboys official pro shop in the local mall.

Isn't MSG owned by the Dolans ??

MSG was spun off from Cablevision, but is still mostly owned by the Dolan family. Is it possible that MSG is playing hardball with TWC in order to harm a competitor of their Cablevision cable system in the NYC area?

Yes they'e owned by Dolan's still. But CV and TWC do NOT compete against each other.

Could be a form of payback for being forced to offer MSG to other systems by the feds.

But I think it's more in line with "Live sports in HD is the only thing left that pay-tv services have compared to streaming." I think this is why ESPN and other sport networks demand and eventually get big increases from the pay-tv services. They know their product in HD is the only unique thing those services offer.

Could be a form of payback for being forced to offer MSG to other systems by the feds.

The Feds forced them to offer the MSG HD feed not the SD feed (which they were already offering and which TWC carried). This is different from the situation with Comcast where they do not offer ANY access to their Sports Teams. CV only held back their HD feed while allowing TWC (and others) to carry their SD MSG feed. IOW: The dispute is about the HD feed not access to MSG itself. IMO since TWC charges their customers extra for HD access (unlike CV where you get a channel and have both SD and HD versions of it) they are trying to get the HD feed for free without splitting the surcharge receipts with CV. I do not know what the offers were but so long as CV split SD fee issue from the HD upgrade fee I would say the Blackout is TWC's fault. IOW: CV might have been willing to avoid the blackout by continuing the status-quo by continuing to supply the SD feed while the question of how much they wanted for the HD feed was on the table.

There is an alternative....

As much as I hated to do it, I called DirecTV yesterday, to hell with TW. I don't really care whose fault it is...all that matters to me is that I'm able to watch the channels.

That's sort of the problem though. If enough people do that, TW will cave to MSG, and MSG will be rewarded with higher fees. MSG will do this to DirecTV when their contract is up. Next thing you'll be reading about how cable's relentless rate hikes are killing the industry and how everyone should cut the cord. Oh, wait...

Re: There is an alternative....

To be fair, I actually question whether they are demanding this supposed 53% rate hike that TW is touting. MSG is specifically targeting TW customers with viewing parties and ticket sweepstakes so people don't miss the games. »keepmsg.com

Maybe it is just a marketing tactic by MSG so customers complain to TW to get the channel back, giving MSG the 53% hike they are actually asking for. Maybe they're just being nice. Who knows.

EDIT: After exploring the site some more, they are actually encouraging customers to switch providers instead of challenge TW directly.

yep, but people don't care about that they "JUST WANT THEIR SPORTS!", everything else be damned....And, if SOPA/PIPA is passed by Congress all those pirated streams of sports events may be dealt with....For myself, I am strictly internet, streams, VOD, and over the air.....Since TV went digital, I find a lot of content that I like......

Timw Warner

This is bullshit. Where is the governor? Or mayor 1%? The Knicks and Rangers are New York City based teams and Manhattan which is where the Garden is and where they both play is I believe 100% Time Warner as in most of the other 4 boroughs and we are blacked out. We cannot watch our local teams due to their differences. . This is complete crap.

Maybe The Bottom Will Finally Fall Out

Rates are a result of inflated salaries being paid to our "sports heros". Answer is to boycott for a year and then let the salaries go to a realistic level. The cost for cable and satellite will come down or at least not increase.

and with no ESPN you lose a LOT of other channels as well. You do realize how many networks Disney-ABC owns right?

Re: Maybe The Bottom Will Finally Fall Out

other channels would do the same. ABC also owns parts of networks to so you'd lose too. And if Discovery ever did this - half of your cable line up would be gone.

Cowardly and childish!

Am I the only one who think these disputes are childish and cowardly? Not to mention inappropriate and unprofessional. If I started a campaign to my customers complaining about one of my vendors Id be one heck of a jerk. Not for trying to stand up for the bottom line and working with that vendor but dragging the consumer into it. Thats how I feel anyways. I have zero respect for any of the decision makers at TW for this kind of crap. But lets face it. Even MSG is to blame. They all are. Theres no difference anymore between the studios, the producers, or the distributors. The whole thing is out of hand and no matter what happens we pay. LMAO Well you all do. Im not paying for this crap.

One thing I know for sure. Its this kind of stuff that makes me want to reconsider my stance on piracy.

Let the consumer decide

Why not let the consumer decide whether they want to pay $10/month for MSG or not. Make it a pay channel.

twcmsg

@spcsdns.net

twc msg

I think the network should have stayed on until they both reached an agreement. But the major factor is MSG pulled video feeds and this is why there is no MSG. Childish on both sides.

Cancelled TWC and had direct TV installed...love it...picture even looks better...cheaper...only 64$ plus additional 12$ for MSG all channels...AWSOME!!!!! Highly recommend people took into it. I just called them found out what direction the dish has to point. Verify a clean line of sight. With snowing did not lose picture. Everyone should cancel TWC!!! Canceling phone and internet next...good by TWC corporate greed too expensive for my blood...
